Bugatti Veyron First Drive Review! Modern Classics Ep 15

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is THE Bugatti Veyron and today is my first drive of the ultimate hypercar despite it being launched 15 years ago! The Bugatti Veyron is the platform that changed the game and ultimately lead to the Bugatti Chrion. It is powered by a W16 quad turbo engine, developing 1001bhp and 1100lb ft torque with a top speed of 250mph!
This episode is in collaboration with @Michelin - who developed the ground breaking tyres for this incredible car!
Massive thanks to my ninja camera crew @alexroryjacobs @huck93

People on the internet are pricks that take everything for granted, they sure don't know how to appreacite anything until they lost it. Don't worry, you still have those who enjoy the excellent content and amazing effort that you put in to create something as good as this video (that is free btw). Keep going with the great work and one merely technical issue won't make it any less good!

There's a lovely video on the ISSIMI channel in the Spotlight where Jason Cammisa tells the reason behind the 406km/h. A specially designed Peugeot actually broke Porsche's record (370km/h) on the Mulsanne straight and achieved 406km/hr and Ferdinand Piech wanted that record back to honor his granddad, Ferry Porsche.

The most insane fact about this car: Despite being the most expensive new car at the time, it was sold at a loss. In fact, it was 5 times more expensive to produce, than the price it was sold at. They lost millions with every car sold. That's how much of a leap forward this car was. The tech wasn't even there to make it cost viable.

My Veyron Story: Of course like many of you, I was about 12 when I saw Jeremy Clarkson drive the Veyron on a Top Gear special and that moment forever changed the way I looked at cars. Fast forward 10 years and I was walking with my sister on Rodeo Drive in California when out of the corner of my eyes, I spotted 4 distinct tail lights and massive hips that could only come from one car, the legendary Veyron. Being able to see one up close for 5 minutes just sent shivers down my spine. My sister was so surprised that her gay brother would be so fascinated with cars rather than clothes, but cars, and now electric cars like the Rimac C2 just gives me more hope and passion to my love of the automobile. Keep up the killer work like always James! PS, you should TOTALLY consider the Porsche Taycan for your new daily driver!

@@tededmondson Both were built to compete in Group B originally (288 GTO EVO and 959), and then turned into road cars when that didn't pan out. So it's not really a response to the 959, but a competitor. The F40 continues to define for many people the ultimate analog supercar, where the 959 was the first of the modern tech-fests. So as something to represent a high point or define an era, I would say the F40 is more significant to the 80s. As a scion of change, the origin of a new era the 959 certainly has its place in history though.

It's unbelievable the speed at which everything is progressing now. It's really hard to appreciate how quickly the world's grown up in the last 15 years, but it was almost in a kind of technological infancy when the Veyron was launched. 15 years ago we were just getting into DVD, the internet was still in its infancy with many connections still being dial-up and the computer tech that made social media possible (Web 2.0 with it's billions upon billions of interconnections) was only being launched, Ferrari only launched the F430 in 2005 (with its futuristic F1 style flappy paddle gear shifters!), flat screen TVs were only just becoming popular then, and the iPhone was still a couple of years away from existing. We were also still 3 years away from the HD digital recording revolution with Canon's 5D MKII (I'm sure James knows what I'm talking about) which was a game-changer for internet content providers. Lastly in 2005, youtube was just launched. With the Veyron I think it was safe to say the future had finally arrived (sorry, that's horribly cliched)! 🤣

James, I truly and honestly love and enjoy all your content. However I think I enjoy your Modern Classic series is my favourite content. We are of similar age and the cars that you review for this series are all cars that were on my walls and dreamed about. I feel as I get older these cars seem to be more important to me (and I feel our age groups) and seem more relevant then the latest Mclaren, Lamborghini, etc. Don’t get me wrong, I love ALL cars new and old. However it’s nice to see how our dream cars are holding up in these incredible automotive times! I also like that your series isn’t just about the crazy expensive cars. I’d love to see more “normal” cars. Like maybe a 1st Gen 986 boxster spyder? Also on the other end of the spectrum, a manual Zonda... Keep up the amazing content and good luck with all your ventures!

Remember the first time I saw one of these - it was parked outside the Dorchester and in a beautiful two tone bronze and black colour scheme - Piech was a mad perfectionist who we have a lot to thank for including the bulletproof nature of your GT3 etc...

Absolutely cracking review of a great car. Even now the Veyron does not look second hand or dated. I remember before it came out and all the carmags at the time reported it was delayed due to the tyres needing to be able to take 250mph which at the time seemed an unbelievable speed. I'm sure the likes of Ferrari,McLaren and Porsche nicked some of that hard earned development for the P1 etc. My favourite Veyron tests are Jeremy Clarkson when it launched on top gear driving through Europe and Harry metcalfes drive in a Veyron vitesse. This review is now up there with them, easily could have watched another 10 minutes thanks.

Not sure if you have been or if you are going to come.. kind regards Bob Rose

I swear the design brief was, "make it costly to service and run". All this adds to the legend and makes it collectable. Even rims need to be replaced every other to fourth tire change. An oil change is a massive job. The McLaren f1 was similar. I can see how people love them but too me to many compromises in the name of speed. Speed is just a number. I'm a hot hatch man, not perfect, but handle well and can enjoy normal roads, fast enough. Just as much advanced engineering goes into making them reliable and useable and cheap. It's easy to over-engineer with cost no limit.

Absolutely fantastic video James! Without the Bugatti I don’t think a lot of modern HyperCars would have had a bar to reach for. This really set the bar for all performance cars from 2005 onwards. Can I just say as well with regards to the video, could you get your editor to do some colour correction in future? The otherwise footage of the car is quite flat in colours and quite muted, but otherwise everything else is sublime!

Great content and facts. Just some extra stuff as I have visited an independent specialist who cares for a collector with 20, yes 20 veyrons and seen it being serviced. The VW group prepared future technology for other models within the VW family. So the Aventador has a similar construction to the Veryron - monocoque with front and rear subframes. Also the Veyron gearbox being mounted infront of the engine was a design made famous by the Countach hence LP (longitudinal engine posterior to gearbox) Lastly, Bugatti no longer manufacture brake discs for the Veyron. This is a real problem. Lovely filming and the choice of a black Veyron is so reminiscent of Ralph Lauren’s Bugatti Atlantique. If this video is re-edited for Christmas etc, I would love to hear a cold start and see the wing going up and down which is so cool.

Amazing engineering. And the other amazing engineering success is how all these extreme technologies were normalized in a mere decade. These $20k tires which can be only replaced in France, are now superseded by regular stock tires which are rated for higher speed, provide more traction, and you can easily fit it onto your rim without glueing.

JWW always killing it! BUT there are few things to point out. The car needed to go over 406kph b/c that was the top speed of a other le man car that was specifically designed to have a higher too speed than the 917. It was a middle finger to that car. Yes the car loses 2000hp due to heat, but losing 2/3 of your hp to heat is normal for road car engine. Your 500hp mustang loses 1000hp as heat and other forms of energy. Puts thing into perspective:)
