“Budget Piccolos” Me: Oooo First One: 800$

Mine was $800 with discounts. I prefer metal and mine is a Gemeinhardt (metal head joint and composite body), and it sounds better than it imo. I’m mostly using it in marching band and since I need something that can project (I’m basically the only one that plays). It sounds like the second one, but struggles with the third octave. It’s also a beginner instrument, so it does pretty good especially for the price.

Had the Gemeinhardt 4W, was worth every penny!! Rich warm tone, easy to hit high and low notes.

The more wood, the better the tone. I tried a Yamaha 62R Piccolo last week, plus two types of resin Piccolos. The Yamaha 62R, with the wooden body, was a total delight to play. 💕😊

I have the pearl piccolo like you showed in the video, it works very well if you play it for a while and has a good response and intonation

I have a Bundy student piccolo that doesn't work (has a bad pad leak), and a 2 year old Jupiter intermediate that I use now and is much better quality, I love it, although I don't get to use it as much as i want to since there are only two flute players in my band but the director does occasionally choose music where I can play piccolo.

Wow a bundy picc! might be worth while to get it repaired one day just to have a back up! But that sounds tough when you have a small band and you don't get the chance to play picc often. I also encourage to warm up with piccolo whenever I practice, it usually helps my flute playing a bit in terms of having more focus on tone production. thanks for watching!

I only paid about $250 for the Bundy and let's just say I got what I paid for lol I can still use it but if I try to get above C (two lines above the staff) I can't get any sound out of it. I didn't play piccolo for about a year before I found my Jupiter on sale half price, plus I got an additional discount for being a good repeat customer (bought it at the same store I got my Pearl flute) so got a $1300 piccolo for only $650 :D

I have a Yamaha pc32...... it’s old but works while I’m learning, I want the pearl one.

Wonderful video! I started out on a composit Gemeinhardt that was very reliable for years. I still use it for outside gigs. My main piccolo now is the Grenadilla Yamaha 81 that I absolutely love. Her name is Fran (after my mom) :D

What a great name John! Love it! Its a good idea to have an outside piccolo because of such rapid changes in weather sometimes can really make a mark on your instrument. The 81 is suberb! Happy practicing!

Wow you’re so fortunate, (which you deserved of course in just jealous!!) I have played flute 5 years and piccolo for 2 I got a used piccolo for my birthday but my parents who got me it didn’t realize it had damage and became unplayable. They found a temporary fix but basically someone who had it before us drilled oversized screws in and hurt the body of it I can’t rly play it now... I don’t tell my parents that tho it would make them feel guiltier I hope sometime I can save up when I can have a job and try out different piccolos like you and choose one I really want brand new I’ve never gotten to use a new instrument and I rly want to!

I really like your take on these reviews! (So far I've only seen JAF's) I do have a piccolo, but it is a Fastnachtspiccolo form Basle/Switzerland so it only has 6 keys. I haven't mastered it yet, but I enjoy it anyway ☺️

Aww Thanks, we try to make them short but sweet. For us its more about inspiring flutist to try as many flutes as they can when they are in the market to trying them. We did a few test videos and making them long like JAF and other flutists didn't fit our style. So this is the what we have and were so happy you like them! But also WOW back to the 6 keyed Piccolo! Sounds awesome! Mind sharing a photo over on the FB TFC Page. I think will have a community page here on youtube eventually but for now we would love to see a pic (lol) of it. Your very welcome! There are many piccolos to choose from at FCNY. Its to bad that none of the piccolos work at your school. Maybe the school can get one fixed for you to play on at least at school. If you ever have a question or request just let me know! Again thanks for watching Naomi!

I actually had a piccolo for years ago but it broke five days after Christmas/my birthday and I think it's because way too hard for me hopefully I get another chance to play the piccolo

Try both if you can before you buy and verify that its been repaired/overhauled recently. If your in the US you should check out flutes4sale.com they have used and new. and you can try up to 3 of them when you use our code TFC. Seaman was really a great piccolo. But the others are great for the budget as well. Hope that helps! Please let me know what you choose regardless!

Looking for some advice between di zhao wood piccolo and some comparable ones. I was able to try the grenadilla and rosewood versions at one shop and ypc 62 traditional head joint/Trevor James wave cut at another shop and on paper they all seem about the same specs lol.

You should try them with the FCNY and use our code TFC. Try it up to 10 days. You can even call them! They are all flutists just be sure to mention our code and they can help.

Hi I was wondering where on the FCNY website the trial form is. They have a checkout but no way to ask for a trial or give the code for extended trials.

No trial form. pick three instruments and there should be a spot called promo code at check out to put the TFC promo code. If your having any problems you can call them and mention the code and they will get you squared away,

I like the Pearl the best

I tried some piccolos of YAMAHA and Pearl yesterday and I liked sound of Pearl better. The piccolo’s mouthpiece was a high - wave type. Which do you think is good , a straight type(normal type) or a high-wave type?

both are great and are for different types of players. I would go with what feels better to play on.

Hi Amelie!! Your videos are always so calming to watch :D I have a question if it's not too much trouble. How do you balance school and music? Because my parents want me and expect me to go into something super academic in university, I'm taking some pretty intense courses in high school. I'm in grade 11 and I'm taking gifted physics, chem, bio, compsci, eng, math, and french, and will probably take the same in grade 12. It's hard to balance this workload with music. The problem with this is that I want to go to music school. I'm not good enough yet, and I'm playing a huge game of catch-up and every day I feel like I'm not catching up fast enough, you know? I've been trying to be more efficient, learning how to learn fast, prioritizing, all that stuff, but sometimes it feels like too much, no matter how efficient I am. I know that I can always be more effective, but I also feel like actually becoming that effective will take too much time. I also know that waiting after high school and then applying is fine too, but if I don't make it right after high school then I'll probably be forced into another field, most likely some sort of science. I'd rather avoid that conflict by just making it the first time. I want to maybe take an easier course or a spare next year, but i dont think my parents will let me, since I basically need all these courses for any academic field according to my parents. Do you have any suggestions on how to lessen my workload? Do I just cut some more corners (although that's hard because all learning is based on previous learning so slacking = death)? Do I convince them I need to take a spare next year? Thanks so much for reading!

There are many answers to this question, some of which pertains to cultural background and the emphasis on "no rest/no downtime". This can lead to burnout, sometimes total. Your practice is much better "a little a lot", rather than "a lot a little". So do something small and focused every day, even if it is only 30 minutes. Your brain will build much better scaffolding for intellectual endeavor this way; cramming is a bad approach.

Would you recommend a Mendini Piccolo? I’m a really low budget (like under $150) so I was looking at those on amazon. My band director recommended Mendini, but he plays trumpet. It would be better to get a opinion from someone that actually plays piccolo.

It’s sub normal piccolo. You have to be really careful with it because it’s prone to break very easily. If you want one that will last the lowest range Yamaha piccolo with a plastic and metal headjoint. I’ll look up the model. If that’s all you can get you should get if you don’t have time to research. My family wasn’t willing to pay more than that, so I ended up with the mendini. The seller said it was a good starting piccolo. It’s fine I will soon be old enough to get a job and save up for a Pearl or Yamaha. Though thank you for the advice!

@@ashleyhyunbii was surprised! it works as a great marching band piccolo. I used it my senior year marching band season and it was so loud! be careful with rain and snow especially because it’s so cheap. I also used it for concert band but it was harder to make it blend as this picc naturally sticks out (more than usual). great for marching would recommend a better picc for concert, but it’s usable for concert if you have to.

If your in the US you can try up to 3 flutes with flutes4sale.com using our code on check out TFC. But if your elsewhere I would encourage to find your closest shop and tell them your budget and try out a few piccolos. I think perhaps Yamaha, Pearl, DiZhao have piccolos under 1000$ which is considered pretty low budget but still good value. Where are you located maybe we can help you find a shop close by.

And do you know what is aproximatly the Minimum price for a good piccolo (I mean I'm only 14, it's not to play every day 2 hours a day, or as a professional player, I just want to try it, I think it can be interessting to try something new. But the flute will still be my main instrument.) ?

right well there are 3 brands DiZhao, Gemeinhardt Piccolo Model 1P and Jupiter all under 700$. If you are in the US try those piccolos with flutes4sale.com with our code TFC. If not let me know where your located and I can direct you where to look. You should at least try them and not just buy one online right away.

Some can be very nice and are a bit better with weather. I gotta try some more. I did a piccolo review video and tried one. Take a peak on that one. Happy practicing John!

@@flutechannel I play both the clarinet and saxophone family. I suppose I could pick up flute as well. The closest thing I have other than my recorders is my fife which has a similar embouchure.

I'm not a flute player, but I feel like the pricing on these is alot for the size? Like I have a professional model clarinet, solid grenadilla wood with silver plated keys, and yet the Gemeinhardt piccolo costs just over twice the amount as my clarinet did. My clarinet was also brand new when I purchased it. Maybe theres more to it? Again I don't know much about flutes so could someone fill me in?

The point is that some flute family instruments are overpriced to match golden and silver flutes. For example, if you buy a professional grenadilla wooden flute, it will cost the same as a professional silver flute or cheap golden (about 15K). A professional BFlat clarinet will only reach 5K even though they use a lot more wood. I hope I have answered your question!!

Adding on, Gemeinhardt specializes in flutes and piccolos. They’ve set the standard and the price insures a quality instrument.

The piece she played was actually written for sopranino recorder.
