Budget Non-CO2 Aquascape - BBA DEFEATED!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

My budget planted tank nature aquarium aquascape. This is an update of how I defeated BBA black beard / brush algae in my low budget planted aquarium aquascape.
Let me know in the comments what aquascape you want to see next in here!
Keep on scaping!

George, what you have done here is very good for people getting into planted tanks and then becoming disillusioned when an algae outbreak happens. It shows that persistence and you can get a nice tank and not to give up. It also shows that even an expert like yourself is not immune. Thanks.

You've done really well there George to get that under control in that short space of time. I'd like to see this carry on over the long term rather than something new but I'm biased. I've set up a nigh on identical tank but using air driven sponge filters so comparing them. The endlers are also a great idea.

HEY! You beat it! That is awesome! Thank you for sticking with it and sharing your process. This will definitely help me and others in the future. I wonder if the tank was just more susceptible to BBA in the beginning while things are trying to get stabilized and plants getting used to not growing in carbon-rich waters... and now that its beat and the tank is stabilizing, if it will stay away. I know you said in the first video that you neglected this tank a bit due to being busy. It would also be cool to see if adding more plants would help the plants fend off algae as it would out-compete them. It would be cool to see an update in a month or two. Thanks George and keep on scaping! ;)

I think this video series has been very popular since not everybody has the means or the interest to use CO2 and other high tech equipment. It would be interesting and helpful to see you do more "low-budget" setups. If you decide to re-scape this tank I'd be interested in seeing a scape using more branching driftwood or roots, to get that underwater root effect. Maybe make it a blackwater tank with botanicals from Tannin Aquatics.

Absolutely. I switched over to low tech starting about 4 years ago and haven't looked back. I have time for more tanks, giving me a greater variety of fish & environments and with glutaraldehyde and correct lighting I can keep most plants, lush and healthy. I love seeing low tech 'pro' set-ups.

Really good to see scapes like this with little tech, just goes to show what you can be achieved. Maybe it would be cool to see what would happen if you kept the scape but added CO2 and better lights to show just how much of a difference that would make? For fish keepers like me whove never used CO2 before, would be nice to see what adding it could achieve...

You could do a standard starter tank to add a bit more challenge! Most folks are not using aquasoils from the get go so how about doing a blasting sand/playsand tank with appropriate plants? You know plants that survive on liquid ferts alone. I'm currently experimenting with a 50 cm deep terraced low-light epiphyte tank with very few water changes and could use some tips myself! :) You could also teach how to make a dirted or mineralized soil tank. Soil for potted plants is pretty cheap after all.

I love this tank. Both the scape and the equipment hidden in that compartment at one end. What about a nano-scape for a Betta? I think that would appeal to a lot of beginners as Betta's in a small tank are usually where a lot of people start out in the hobby. Maybe you could even make it one of those quick videos you wanted to do. 1-hour scape challenge? On the topic of shrimp. Last week I was over the moon to spot two baby cherry shrimp in my tank, as I only have two adults that survived the great Betta massacre of 2017. On Wednesday I decided to clean my canister filter, and what should have been a 20 minute job turned in to a two hour long shrimp rescue mission. I pulled 14 baby cherry shrimp out of the filter!

Hi George. I'm going to give this a try in my 60 liter tank that's about 38 cm tall. I'm using dual HO T5 (14w 6700k + 14w full spectrum.) do you have a recommendation on how many hours of light I should start with? I'll be doing as close to this same substrate, plants, etc as I can.

I think keep it low tech and see how it grows without co2 to show how you can still grow plants at low cost

Hey George, big fan of your videos but I have a major problem with hair algae in my nano tank. I might have too much light on it and would love advice on how to get rid of it 👍

Reduce light photoperiod, remove as much algae as possible. Daily 30% water changes and 2x dose of liquid carbon

Great video George. How long do you have to wait to add shrimp to your tank? My tank has been running a it over a week. Thanks! Daniel

Thanks Daniel. One week should be ok if you’re heavily planted and the plants are growing

Lighting is another expensive 'scaping cost. You can ebay a 6500K LED floodlight in various wattages for less than $10 US. I'd like to see that. Great scapes. I watch Joey if I want entertainment...I come to you for serious advice. Have a great day!

LOL, I never meant that you weren't entertaining :). I loved the backstory episode. I go back even farther in the hobby...metal angle iron tanks, and incandescent bulbs. I also did a 26yr USN stint. I'm doing a 10-gallon rimless w/a floodlight. It's on hold a bit to wait on hardscape so I put some baby bristlenose in there to cycle the filter until they grow out a bit. Keep 'scaping. You're a great Ambassador for the 'scaping hobby! You made the right career move...Keith
