Buddy Rich 1980 Ludwig Drumset-Ken Loomer Part I

Музыка

This is my Buddy Rich Ludwig Drumset which is the correct size and features that Buddy Rich used with his Big Band back in 1980. Buddy began this endorsement deal with Ludwig back in May of 1978 to December of 1981. In the book by Rob Cook"The Ludwig Book",it states that these drums were made from 1978 to 1980. When Bill Ludwig the II sold the company to Selmer, Selmer decided not to renew Buddy`s contract with them,a big mistake. Buddy did play Ludwig in 1982 until he found a set of Slingerland Radio Kings drums he loved and played that from 1983 to 87. Ludwig made great drums and these sound so wonderful. Ludwig back in 1980 made these drums at the Chicago factory. All drums had the 6 ply maple shells and of course the famous white marine pearl finish to them. In part one,I go into detail about these drums and the changes Buddy made from the catalog drumset. In part two I will be playing these drums up-close. Also,I have used these drums with my Ken Loomer Big Band. If you want to hear them with a Big Band, put in Ringing Museum Ken Loomer Big Band concert and some video`s will show up. Great that Ludwig has for 2017 a Buddy Rich model drumset to celebrate the 100th anniversary of his birth. Thanks to his daughter Cathy Rich, Buddy`s great Big Band and music has lived on since his passing in 1987. I`m sure Buddy would be so happy that one of his fans has done the hard work of putting together a Big Band to make sure this great artform is still alive today. I always honor Buddy by playing some of his music and of course like Buddy,I always want to play new charts and letting the people of today hear this great form of jazz music. Please check out my Big Band video`s and the wonderful musicians who keep this great music alive. Like I said,Ludwig makes great drums back in 1980 like this Buddy Rich kit,and it`s wonderful they still doing it today. For my bio, goto kenloomer.com.

I love the wide open sound I can get out of these Ludwig BR drums. Very clear sound and that bass drum has that big round full tone to it. I have yet to see another person have one of these drums, plus Ludwig did not made too many of these BR sets. Thanks for your comment.

KenLoomer Thanks for the reply, Ken. I’m just a weekend warrior and I play a Pearl, but I’ve also got a 1961 Slingerland jazz kit that came with a 5x14 Radio King. The kit is currently in rebuild status to fix some covering damage and update some hardware, but I use the Radio King religiously. It’s a beautiful drum that I get a ton of compliments on and the sound is priceless. I love these old kits, that’s for sure. I remember finding my brother’s 1976 Slingerland and Ludwig catalogs and reading them cover-to-cover. I think my favorite was the Ludwig Octa-Plus Vistalite in Red-Amber-Yellow. Man, those were beautiful.

On this 1980 Buddy Rich Ludwig drum set I`m using all A Zildjian cymbals. The ride is a 21 inch, two 18 inch crash cymbals, 8 inch splash, 22 inch swish knocker, and 14 inch New Beat hi-hats. Of course I saw Buddy Rich in concert at Dunedin High School on January14, 1980. When I saw Buddy with those Ludwig drums at this concert, I decided to buy one that year. You see those drums I bought in this video. Then Buddy played in St. Petersburg on the 17th. I recorded both concerts and they are on KZread. Plus I talked to Buddy at both concerts and he was always so nice to me. You can see the pictures I took from those two concerts in this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/dIin0NB6ZtHSps4.html I was at that Clearwater Jazz Holiday in 1982 also. No way did I ever think that one day I would be doing that Clearwater Jazz Festival with my Big Band.

I had a 1970 Slingerland Buddy Rich set. It was black walnut, and I've never seen one like it since (or before). 24" bass drum with double spurs, double cymbal stands, and the ball-joint tom holder. This Ludwig set looks like a memorial, like no one ever beat the crap out of them. I will say I used the Ludwig Speed King pedals. They were the best, with nothing like them today.

Very important to me to know about the history of these great American drum companies and the artist who used them. So glad Ludwig is still with us and making some excellent drums now. When the Ludwig family owned the company, they made some of the best drums of all time. I`m just a local drummer down here in Florida who made a good living playing shows and concerts with my Big Band,Quartet, and doing what it takes to be an active drummer. I know a lot of drummers don`t want to do the work of forming a band, hiring musicians and booking jobs, but this is what it takes to play jazz now. I first saw Buddy Rich back in 1969 and he was playing Slingerland drums. Then I saw him many times in 1980 and he was using this model of Ludwig drums. Never did see Buddy using Rogers drums. So I loved the Slingerland and Ludwig BR model drums since I saw Buddy use these drums. Then Buddy went back to using Slingerland Radio King drums after Ludwig, and I saw him play those drums many times. I made these video`s for guys like you who really enjoy the history of these great drums. I don`t have these drums just to look at them, but I as know from my video`s,I use them on my Big Band concerts. These drums are meant to be played on,and I do my best playing on these classic drums. Thanks so much for your postive comment.

Hi Ken. RE: the pearl finish: Because of the lighting, I cannot tell if your set has the "real" White Marine Pearl finish. During that time, Ludwig's White Marine Pearl finish had a blue hue to it, which gave it the "marine" distinction. Today, 2017, no drum maker offers that pearl finish, but the wrap appears to be still available from JamminSam.

I believe Buddy made the switch back to Ludwig in 1977-78 or so, like you and Rob Cook state. Steve Maxwell says he's got the last Buddy Rich Slingerland Set (circa 1976) that he played. I got to both see, and play this set a bit at Steve's house one afternoon. One unique thing about this set I remember, was Buddy had put a Rogers Swivomatic Tilter on the top of the Splash Cymbal Rod-Arm.

Buddy Rich switched back to Ludwig in May of 1978. First time Buddy played his new Ludwig drums was on the May 9th Johnny Carson Show. That video is on youtube. Buddy`s last last Slingerland drum set was a 1977 model. You can see that Slingerland set on the Feburary 14th 1978 Merv Griffin show. Steve Maxwell bought Buddy`s last Slingerland set from Harry Cangany who wrote the "The Great American Drums" book. The back cover showed that Buddy Rich 1977 drum set. Buddy starting in 1968 always used a Rogers splash arm without the tilter. I have one of those Rogers splash arm which you can adjust the height, but no tilter to adjust the cymbal angle.

That strainer on the wooden snare was called a P 87. I had one on a 8x14 Ludwig Coliseum snare and hated it. Could you talk a little bit about Buddy's Syndrum?

  • @KenLoomer

Your right Gregg about this Ludwig BR concert snare having the P-87 strainer. They made two snare butts for this strainer. The P-34 butt was on this BR snare which is for the individually adjustable snares. The P-32 butt was used for the regular snare wire. The Syndrum was a analog electronic drum synth that came out in 1977. The company gave one to Buddy in January of 1980 to try out. It made a high pitched wave sound used for sound effects on rock tunes. He used it for about four months and then decided not what he needed. One recording he made in March of 1980,the Man From Planet Jazz cd you can hear him playing this Syndrum. Thanks for your comment Gregg.

@Greg Patterson - The P87 DID suck! I firmly believe that it was a major factor as to why Ludwig marching snares fell so out of favor in the early ‘80s. Slingerland’s TDR, Pearl’s Championship, and Yamaha’s MS814 had the early versions of the modern marching throw-off which absolutely crushed the P87, but Ludwig kept pumping those things out. I taught a high school line back in the day that had Ludwigs, and those strainers, even when new, were almost unusable. I blew my mind that they put them on so many drum kit snares too. The P87 is emblematic of so much that was wrong with Ludwig back in the day. I’m glad to see they’ve gotten their act together over the last 20-25 years.

When Buddy Rich was using these Ludwig drums in 1980,he used all A Zildjian cymbals. He used on his left side a 18 inch thin crash, and on his right side a 18 inch medium thin crash. He used a 21 inch heavy ride,a 8 inch thin splash, and 14 inch New Beat Hi-Hat cymbals. Also used a 22 inch swish knocker. These are the cymbals I also use in this video. I love the look of those diamond plates for the Tom arm. Much nicer looking than the giant pyramid shaped mounts they ended up using. I’d like to put them on a set I’m building but would like to use the Gibraltar Slingerland style arm for better movement. Unfortunately these are an inch and the pearl/Gibraltar style arms are a little smaller. Do you think using a plastic insert sleeve from a Pearl mount would fit in a Ludwig diamond plate to allow a smaller sized tube arm? I love the Modular arm but having a geared filter makes it hard to get the Toms positioned properly. Unless it’s teeth are different from Pearls.

I agree with you Ryan that the diamond plates are so much better than those giant thick pyramid plates that Ludwig used later on in the 80`s. Hello Ken, may I ask what diameter the Ludwig Buddy Rich drumstick model has ? You already mentioned in the video that it's the same size like a typical ( Ludwig?)5A model. Since most of the standard 5A,7A, 2B,.. etc.. models vary from company to company I thought maybe there'd be a possibility to messare the diameter with a caliper rule. The tip looks indeed a bit special. Reminds me of the Zildjian Bill Stewart model and the taper seems to be on the shorter side. Correct me if I'm wrong. If you have by accident a caliper rule by hand I'd be very happy if you'd check out the diamter of the stick. ' hope I don't go like a bull at the gate but if you find a minute, that'd be very nice. I guess may other Buddy Rich freaks/fans would be interested in that, too. ....do you know any drumstick that is currently in production that comes close to the 15A B. Rich stick ? I don`t have a caliper rule to measure the diameter of the Buddy Rich Ludwig stick, but it`s the same as the Vic Firth 5A model stick when I compared both sticks. The stick Buddy Rich liked the most was the Slingerland BR model they made for him in the late 60`s and 70`s. The Pro Drum Shop in LA made a copy of this stick for Buddy when he played the Slingerland Radio King drums back again in 1983 to 87. The X Cell Drumstick Company makes a copy of the Slingerland BR sticks call the Bed Rock Classic Series stick. I have a video of my vintage drum stick collection that you can see these sticks. Most important to me is to keep a swinging modern Big Band alive today. Very rare now for a drummer to lead a jazz Big Band. I have posted many video`s of my Big Band doing a tribute to his 100th birthday year for 2017. Thanks for your comment.

Playing with a Big Band,Buddy wanted to make sure you could hear every beat on his ride cymbal over the brass. He started to use a heavy ride cymbal around 1976. Like you said,he did not want a lot of wash on his ride.So he started putting some tape under the ride to stop the extra wash on his ride cymbal. I know some drummers today who use like a K Zildjian ride with a Big Band and all you hear is wash, and no stick definition. Sounds good for a trio, but not for a Big Band.

  • @KenLoomer

The drum lesson I had with Buddy Rich was at Sea World in Orlando back in 1977. Buddy would do two shows a day at Sea World so I got a chance to talk with Buddy between shows. I have pictures of that meeting and me on his Slingerland drums you can see on my video I did to honor Buddy for his 100th birthday tribute. I play in the same traditional grip as Buddy, but my left hand was no way near as good as my right. So I asked Buddy what to do to make my left hand better and stronger. He told me to show him my grip on the sticks,so I did. As soon as Buddy saw my left hand grip he said"you have no balance with your left hand. You need to move your hand more to the middle of the stick". I would at that time have my left hand more at the end of the stick. Buddy then showed me how he griped the left hand and with the stick being near the middle and said the balance is better that way and you will have better control.Just with his left hand Buddy was showing me his amazing way of playing. He gave the stick back to me me and said now you do it. So I moved my left hand grip more to the middle of the stick and I noticed it felt so much better. Better control and power. The master was right! I have been using this grip and balance point now all my life. You can check out any drum solo video I have posted to see this. One simple lesson from Buddy made me a better player. Of course it was his music and that great Big Band of his that made me a great fan of Buddy. The way Buddy with his drumming would make the music sound so good and bring it up at the highest level possible. That is what I learned the most from him is to do what it takes to make the music feel so good with your drumming. No way back in 1977 I thought I would have my own Big Band playing some of the great music that Buddy played. But with hard work and the will to do it,I now for over 15 years have my own Big Band. I have posted 100`s of concerts of my Ken Loomer Big Band and of course honor Buddy by playing some of his music. Still using the same left hand grip he showed me and playing the music I love all the time.

Nice kit. I always felt that Buddy's switch to Ludwig was purely a financial move. They simply offered him the most money. Ludwig was always regarded as a "rock" kit -- maybe since it was a fave of the rock bands from the Beatles to Led Zeppelin. Buddy tuned the Ludwigs high and used the Ludwig heads (which almost nobody else used) and the result was a very "tinny" sound. As for the super sensitive snare, it never really did make much sense. The simple string type is actually superior. I do like the single tom holder. (Being a single mounted tom guy myself). It may be because it was Buddy's heyday but I always felt he sounded best when using a Rogers kit. (Even though he was associated throughout most of his band leader days with Slingerland -- which the Ludwigs based their design).

Not to many of these Ludwig Buddy Rich drum sets were made. Buddy also played Ludwig drums back in the 50`s and he knew Bill Ludwig very well. When Ludwig sold their drum company to Selmer, they did not want to renew his contract, so Buddy went to a 40`s Slingerland Radio King set for the rest of his career. Since I saw Buddy so many times playing Slingerland drums, and I thought those drums sounded great. Listen to that live Mercy Mercy album he did and those Slingerland drums sounded amazing for a live recording. Thanks so much for your comment.

@@KenLoomer Yes, the drum sound on Mercy Mercy is great. I also think Keep The Customer Satisfied has a great drum sound. But I maintain, "Swinging New Big Band" might be his best recorded drum sound and he's using Rogers on that one. Incidentally, all three of those albums are recorded live.

@@NelsonMontana1234 Most important is Buddy knew what kind of sound he wanted out of his drums. I saw Buddy Rich live from 1969 to 1986. So I never heard Buddy live playing his Rogers drums. It was mostly the Slingerland drums and then starting in 1978 he played the Ludwig BR model drums. Then I saw him with the Slingerland Radio King drums. Hearing Buddy live and at times only a few feet away from him I notice how great his drums sound with his tuning. Always that big open sound and just driving the Big Band with his amazing drumming. I made a video showing the many pictures I took of Buddy from when I saw him from 69 to 86. Here is the link kzread.info/dash/bejne/dIin0NB6ZtHSps4.html The reason why I have my own Big Band for the last 20 years is because I loved the music he played so much. I have used both this Ludwig drum set and my Slingerland drums with my Big Band. I have lots of video`s that I posted of my Big Band uses these drum sets. Thanks for your comment.

When the Ludwig family owned the company, they wanted the best drummers like Buddy Rich,Joe Morello and many more to be Ludwig endorsers. But when Selmer bought them out in 1981, William F Ludwig the 3rd was told to just have one endorser and that drummer would be the one on the Lawrence Welk Show because Selmer had a horn deal with the orchestra. This info from the Ludwig Book by Rob Cook. Of course Selmer almost ruin the Ludwig Drum company. The Conn company did ruin the Slingerland drum company. When the Slingerland family had it,it was the best and largest drum company at the time. So glad Ludwig made a come back and is still with us now.

I thought the Hercules hardware for being big was not that bad since it was very light in weight being the tubular kind. The top of the line Ludwig hardware today is still big ,but very heavy. Of course today the drummer has the best choice of what kind of drum hardware will best meet their needs.

Ken as an example I had Rogers Swivomatic stands years before I had Ludwig Hercules hardware when I purchased my first Ludwig kit in "77. The Hercules stands were so inferior in design and build quality to the Rogers hardware that I was really shocked. Not only did those plastic handles break but raising and lowering the stands was next to impossible. While I always felt that Rogers at their best built better quality and sounding drums than Ludwig I realize that is just my opinion, but it's difficult to argue about the hardware. Even Ringo and a number of other players were using Rogers Swivomatic hardware on their Ludwig drums. I am playing a set of Rogers Drums from around 1970 with their hardware from the same period and considering that they are approaching 50 years old it is amazing how well they would stand up to today's lighter weight hardware. You can't say that about the Ludwig hardware from the past.

I agree with you Dan about Rogers drums. They were a great drum company that made excellent drums and hardware. I have posted my video`s of me talking about the Rogers Dynasonic snare drum which was the best. I have the Roger Swivo-o-matic foot pedal which was just an amazing pedal. I always like the Slingerland Set-o-Matic tom holder which worked great for me for a single tom arm. So far my 38 year old Hercules Hardware has been great for me.As you can see in this video, they still look new and I have never had any problems with the plastic T-handle breaking or it going up and down. I know Ludwig got rid of the plastic parts which was a good idea. It should of been all metal parts, so I must of been lucky none of them have broken. Wonderful you are still playing that great 70`s Rogers drums. They are great! I still have my 1970 Slingerland set which I have posted many times on KZread.
