I miss Randy very much! I was Randy's bassist for 25 years. I played many times with him and Jimmy Ford (still play with Jimmy on occasion). The story of his drum kit as he told me is as follows: Randy graduated High School at age 17 and went to play with the Lawrence Welk Orchestra. On one of the shows, Buddy Rich was a guest star. Buddy seemed to like Randy's playing, but being Buddy, told Randy "No self respecting drummer would be caught dead playing a piece of crap drum set like that". A week later, a truck pulled up in front of Randy's house and unloaded a brand new Slingerland drum set, Buddy Rich edition. This was a gift from Buddy Rich. Later, when Randy started doing the Gene Krupa tributes, he was contacted by the Krupa family and was given one of Gene's snare drums. So, the kit was a gift from Buddy Rich and the snare was one of Gene Krupa's snares. That is the story as told to me by Randy, himself.

Randy and his wife, Gina, were very special to us at the Ford Drum Company. We rebuilt that kit, recut the edges, and made it sing, sing, sing in Randy’s gifted hands. Miss him every day.

I'm 70 now and I have had nine kits in my lifetime...1 from Rogers, 2 from Gretsch, 2 from Pearl and 4 from Slingerland. Started on on a Slingerland kit and ended on Slingerland. And by far the Slingerland kits were the best. I was given the Rogers kit and was never impressed by it. I bought my first Pearl kit in 1995, I wanted a Slingerland, but at the time Gibson owned them and I did not trust Gibson. Played Pearl from 1995 until 2018 and switch to Gretsch. But three years ago I began a search for a 1960s Buddy Rich kit. I have been playing the Slingerland Rich kit ever since. My first Slingerland kit I got in 1965 It served me until 1977. I grew up in the Rock and Roll days...but Rich, Krupa. Morello, Bellson, Haynes, Jones, Roach, Blakey and so many more were big influences in my life...including my dad!

Buddy loved randy, I heard Buddy call him caputnick as a joke. I played professionally for yrs on that exact slingerland set. When not in use I would set em up in front of our picture window. The drummers that would stop to see a buddy rich set and i could never say no when they ask to play them . The friends i were unbelievable. It all came to an when my youngest son died after a liver transplant. We had to sell anything of value to clear up 90 grand of medical bills. I've cried all the way through this fantastic show. Your praying is fantastic. Im 67 and wa nt to play again. The cost has gone nuts. I'd take any brand , color, size anything to get started again im a nard member since 74, i can sight read also steve if anyone willing to donate a old banged playable set please let me know thank-you bill feilhauer.

Ahhh fantastic Steve Maxwell! I just loved when you seemingly effortlessly moved into a phenomenal snare buzz-roll!! A buzz-roll says a lot about a player. And thanks so much for playing the full Krupa sing sing drum solo. It is great to see how that solo was constructed, and not how so many newer drummers think a solo is about banging fast and crashing cymbals! Yes, what a treat Steve and I loved that happy-drummer smile at the end!😃.
