Great live version of him playing it on Conan O’Brien show. Was there. In a tiny studio the sound was so loud and clear. It’s great live but definitely a long jam

Vini "Mad Dog" Lopez on drums - the metronome that is the Mighty Max is still a couple years from joining E st Vini ( and David Sancious on keyboards ) were definitely more jazz influenced- they both left in '75 to more jazz sounds On Bass though is the Tennessee Titan himself - the foundation of E st nation mr Gary W Tallent - still touring with Bruce

I agree below that this is one definitely better live. He doesn't usually do jam type songs but this is one. It's gone over 20 minutes in concert! It seems like people either love it or hate it. I love it!

The title "Kitty's Back" came from a sign on a go go bar announcing the return of a popular dancer.

This is one of those songs that sounds better live IMO. For a performance of it, I would check out the performance of it in Perth in 2014. Other Bruce recommendations: Ramrod (from Barcelona 2002), Mary’s Place (from Barcelona 2002), Waiting On a Sunny Day (from really any concert), New York City Serenade (from Rome 2013), Born in the U.S.A. (From Madison Square Garden 2000), and (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher (From the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame 25th anniversary). All amazing!

Another Springsteen song that is 10x better live. Showcase for the talents of the E Street Band.

Yeah to echo the previous comments, the live version of this song, specifically the 75 Hammersmith Odeon show, is astounding and not to be missed. Basically the greatest rock and roll bar band in history just decided to mix in jazz. Incredible. Here’s the link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hIuGztN_qdq-hLw.htmlsi=FjcqTsjmCPDoCliJ

Different drummer, piano player, producer, manager and others and released in 1973. Actually appreciate the tempo changes

This was Bruce's second album and imo he was still learning how to properly use his musical genius. It seems at times he was throwing everything in to every song including the kitchen sink. I still love it though.

I don't know the reason, but today the makes the song in the same way. Longer, much longer, but with the same changes in rhythm

The E Street Shuffle falls into this same zone. Of course it was the same album.

The more dramatic the lyrics the faster the song. The more melancholy the lyrics the slower the tempo. It is also trying to give you a sense of NYC and all the drama of a big city. Another reason, it was the early 70s and everyone wad still recovering from 60s, lol. Garry Tallent on bass, other than Bruce he is the longest serving ESB member.

Thanks for the reaction. I'm really a big Springsteen fan, but I can't relate to this song, nothing at all. He played the song at every concert on tour last year, terrible.

This song is my absolute Bruce nightmare. If he plays it live I go and get beer....lots of beer, because the song is so long. And.....IN MY OPINION.....the worst song he's ever written. EVER........... I just can't! 😬😳 Great video anyway,David! Thx! 👍🏻

I couldn't agree more. For a while Bruce was playing this at almost every Philly show I went to. Each time I went to use the bathroom and then grab a drink and the song was STILL going by the time I got back to my seat😂

I'm definitely in the minority on this one, but this is one of my least favorite Bruce songs. I've seen it live a bunch of times and it just goes on forever (and not in the good way like songs like Jungleland, Racing In The Street, etc). I don't know what it is, this one just never clicked with me like it has the majority of the fandom
