Missed opportunity of a LIFETIME!!! They could have set up a match between Hogan and Bret for the title at SummerSlam (like they originally planned) and have Hogan turn HEEL. Hogan could have cut promos about how he's the biggest star in WWF history and how Bret doesn't stand a chance against him, etc.... The Hogan heel turn in WCW (with the NWO) would happen just a few years later. Hogan began his WWF career as a heel with Freddy Blassie as his manager, and he could have turned heel again on the way out. Bret would have been the underdog taking on the toughest champion in company history. The man that beat Bundy, Andre, Sid, Undertaker, etc... Imagine how over Bret would have been to get a win over Hogan at SummerSlam. THAT would have launched the New Generation era better than anything ever.

If that match ever happened, Bret would had been the rightful heel.. Hogan was still wildly popular in 1993... No matter what the smarks try to convince everyone that Hogan was old and people now cared only for New Generation wrestlers like Bret Hart, Duke Drosese and Adam Bomb.. Bret was still relatively new as a main eventer and was slowly transfering to a full fledged babyface after endless years of being a heel with Neidhart and Jimmy Hart... The fans still loved Hogan as the main hero and everyone else with the exception of Taker, Ultimate Warrior and Macho Man was way below him in popularity levels.

*Bret was never put over strong like former champions were* . Ultimate Warrior got to beat Hogan clean at WM but never lost clean to anyone. Hogan won the title clean from Iron Shiek and stayed unbeaten for ages. Bret wins the title on a house show (not a PPV) so nobody sees it, and then LOSES TO A HEEL (Yokozuna) at his first WM as champion. That's some serious BS. Bret should have won the title from Ric Flair on a PPV (WM8 for example) and then held onto it versus Yokozuna. You could have had Fuji and Yoko beat up Bret after the match at WM9 and then have Hogan come out and make the save, put the title on Bret, pop the crowd, and then let Bret celebrate in the ring to close the show. He needed to win the title and defend it on PPVs to build him as champion. It wasn't going to happen on house shows.

Makes sense that's where the money is. Also not to many other people making the case yo be I. That spot while he was there. Hogans run was played out and he clearly didn't want to be full time. Vince tried.and wanted luger and the fans rejected him. Shawn was still ways away from being ready for the spot. Diesel was a bit of a rough sell as.a Babyface he seemed to Garner more attention as a very tough to beat heel, plus was really green. Savage didn't wanna do full time (Savage says so himself) I guess people think he did wanna go full time cause he wrestled in WCW, but they were offering big money and lighter schedules. They passed Bret up to get o e more run out of Hogan, which wasn't as I believe as successful as they had originally hoped for. Then tried Lex who didn't work. By the time WM10 came.around and Bret got it back it was clear he was.#1. they felt he could be the champ they let h beat Ric Flair clean for the title, and all Bret knew beforehand was how WWF treated Hulk as the top guy so he always compared what he was.doing to what he knew which was Hogan. Also in Bret's the if you put the title on a Babyface that was a big deal. Heels were transitional champs not so much babyfaces (at least that had been WWFs formula and probably the formula on Stampede). Most promotions wouldn't put the big strap on a guy under 30 or even in some.cases that was a bit young depending how long they were in the business. It is clear though the WWF had big shoes.to fill with Hogan gone and we're.trying new things which led to title.chnages becoming more common especially with more PPV introduced.

R.A.J. Firstly, I picked Diesel and Shawn because they were the other major stars during Bret's run in the WWF in the mid 90's. In fact, each guy was pushed as the top babyface ahead of Bret in 1995 and 1996 respectively. So yes, there was a purpose behind listing them. Secondly, let me teach you a little English, which might help when replying to others in the future. Do you know what the word "combined" means? Because if you don't, I suggest you grab a dictionary and look it up. And then you might not be so eager to focus on individuals listed, rather than the group as a whole. Thirdly, if you bothered to read Bret's book, you would realise that this guy's ego was so out of control that it would require its own wing in the Hall of Fame. Hell, Bret's ego could fill a whole building. And that was even before the Montreal Screwjob. Finally, you got personal with your original reply. I simply returned fire. It's called a receipt. It's not my fault you got your panties in a bunch because I dared to say anything negative about your hero Bret Hart. Fans like you make me wanna puke.

Mark Robinson I've Read Bret's book, heard his interviews, and I've also read and heard enough from Hogan, Warrior, Shawn, and Nash...they all have huge egos, some are deluded, but they all think highly of themselves, to single out Bret's ego from that bunch is inane...you may be offended by him because you're not a fan, but objectively Bret's ego is no worse than anybody you've mentioned I don't need a spitefull small booger like you to edify what you meant by your original comment when that comment itself is the epitome of worthless bitchiness...you could've grouped any list of top stars together, that's how random and worthless your comment was, breaking it down only further illustrated that The fact that you included names that weren't bigger than Bret within a group of other big names again shows how sprawled out your ideas are, you have no idea what you're talking about Your comments annoyed me because they're a dime a dozen, thoughtless generic drivel posing as being a clever putdown....you think you're funny, but your material isn't even good enough to wipe the inside of a toilet clean, this isn't about "my hero", it's that idiot wrestling fans like you are like car exhaust, you pollute every conversation that arises Dumbass...

Bret vs Hogan at SummerSlam as a non-title match would have worked. Even with the photoshoot playing tug-o-war with the belt. Yoko beats Hogan at KOTR, as planned, then Hogan faces Bret at SummerSlam for #1 Contender and a title shot at Survivor Series. Yoko could still face newly turned Lex Luger, same finish, which could open up the chance for Hogan vs Luger down the road. I could see Hogan putting over Bret in a situation like this, but I don't think he would have ever put Bret over for the title.

When Hogan came back in Feb 93, it was pretty much always just going to be a quick 1 big match cash in for Hulk, and that was at WM 9. Hulk realised his star power and influence in wwf was gone and done and so did Vince, which is why they didnt try to make a long term deal. Instead they worked out a deal for that upcoming tour in july in europe, because Hulk was still very popular in europe. So the idea was just to do that only. Vince doesn't like baby face v babyface matches, thats why we didnt get a Warrior v Hogan rematch. You rarely ever saw a face v face in wwf at that time. Vince probably didnt want Bret to look like a bad guy in beating Hulk. Besides that Vince still had some doubts about Bret being his number 1 guy. He kinda only put the belt on Bret to take it away from Flair. The idea was to put the title on Warrior before Warrior got fired in Oct 92. Bret was a fill in. The plan was to put the title on a Big Man, ie: Yoko, or Luger. WCW had Vader Yoko was a bigger Vader. The Magazines will tease any possibility to make sells. Bottom line: Vince was really unsure of having Hogan v Bret and Bret Hart can come off sounding pushy and entitled.

Hard to believe hardly anything that Bruce says because he's got his lips too firmly placed on Vince's backside. Given the landscape at the time, so many things would have worked or not worked and it's anyone's guess as to what would have been best. If Vince wanted to put the title on Bret, he should have waited to do it at a PPV. Flair wins the title back from Macho and then holds onto it until Survivor Series or Royal Rumble. Bret wins the title there and then faces another top face like Macho at WrestleMania and goes over. Bret goes onto the King of the Ring and faces Mr. Perfect but it goes to a draw and a rematch is automatically scheduled for SummerSlam but at King of the Ring, there is a stipulation that says that the winner of the tournament gets the title shot at SummerSlam. The tournament is won by a heel, such as Razor or Shawn, and it becomes a match between Perfect and the King of the Ring, and Bret ends up facing Perfect and loses it to him. I mean, that would have made more sense than what we got.

Hogan was afraid of being booed at Summerslam - end of story. Getting eliminated at Royal Rumble 1992 and hearing the crowd CHEER for it was really the moment of realization for Hogan. Mania 9 was a bullshit finish, King of the Ring championship no one cared for so Bret saved the show . . . later on, Hogan's promo over the Macho Man winning World War 3 - that was when he knew the fans didn't like Hulkamania anymore and his bogus way of losing titles was over with.

The black lady who stalked him at the airport. His stories of infidelity and his excuses of “I was on the road all the time. Julie and I were fighting. Of course im going to seek companionship.” I’ll say it again. That book was a love letter to himself.
