Obviously the back catalog was worth more than what Vince paid for everything. Turner execs were too dumb to see what content would be worth in just a decade.
@ShadowAngel1860
10 ай бұрын
They weren't dumb. It was a inside deal orchestrated by Brad Siegel (then CEO of WCW) and his best friend Stu Snyder (who worked for Turner, but around 2001 just happened to be the COO of Titan Sports) This was already set in stone in 1996 during the lawsuit regarding Scott Hall, when Siegel gave Vince McMahon the right of first refusal should WCW go up for sale. Already back then it was obvious, that WCW's days were numbered and it would ultimately end up with Vince some day. There were other, bigger offers. Bischoff and Fusient Media offered 50 million dollars, a short time later Jerry Jarrett with some investors offered 70 million, but Siegel and Snyder wanted to see the promotion ending up in Vince's hands. Not even 1 year after the sale, Snyder all of a sudden left his position of Titan and returned to AOL/Time Warner/Turner, were he became infamous by allowing non-cartoons on the Cartoon Network, a decision that was met with a lot of hate from pretty much everybody.

The ULTIMATE unanswered question is what ever happened to the territorial title belts (upon either closing and or purchases)...Bruce says "not alot of cool looking belts". Is that to say there were "other title belts" besides the "WCW" promotion title belts. Or did they end up in the trash like Tito Santana's 1984 Green strap title belt he won back from Valentine. WCW went under 10 years too early. If it would have went under in 2011 with social media being around by then, it could have survived until it got another tv deal. Bischoff was going to buy wcw until Time Warner and AOL said no to keeping it on their network, which killed bischoffs offer. Had social media been around at that time however, that might have enticed bischoff to still want to buy it and put it on KZread to broadcast wcw, until he was able to land a network tv deal somewhere else. Of course this is all hypothetical..

@DODGERBLUE5510 ай бұрын
Vince and his ego ruined what could have been amazing. Yes, there were a bunch of guys under contract that were sitting out…that wasn’t what did it. It was Vince BURYING WCW and making them AND ECW look inferior and destroyed any interest in the product. What could have been… You instantly put WCW on TV as a competitor ‘run’ by Shane. Then Steph (or Paul Heyman) merges ECW with WCW and create a ‘super show’. Then…they invade. Run ins and pop ups to start gaining interest in the product but the shows are NEVER on at the same time. The ratings war is over, now they just want to shut WWF down. And they are not weak…the run ins are impactful and take guys out of commission. Then cross over matches begin on Raw and Nitro. Then, a PPV for JUST ECWCW. Armageddon has the first crossover PPV with WWF vs ECWCW talent. The NWO vs Rock/Austin handicap match takes place as the Main Event. This allows Austin to undo his heel turn and return to the baby face the fans have been wanting to cheer for. Then the Rumble has cross over matches and both sides have men in the Rumble match. Winner doesn’t go to Mania though. Winner faces their shows champ at No Way Out for the belt. Then No Way Out has a WWF title match and a ECWCW title match. Then…Wrestlemania X-8 is a true crossover show and breaks main event tradition since the rumble winner is not in the main event. The WWF champion meets the ECWCW champ to unify the belts. The winner is the ‘dominant champ’ and that show ‘absorbs’ the others talent. WWF wins (but not in a blow out) and now we have one true unified brand. ECWCW is ‘dead’ and now relegated to a library of memories. But the talent isn’t gone. It just found a new home. Backlash is the first ‘unified’ PPV and we have one main event for the NEW WWF title…the Universal Championship (undisputed belt design)
@mattcaporuscio695610 ай бұрын
I know a lot of people hated this outcome with WCW/WWF but it could’ve been worse. Just imagine in the mid 90s Vince McMahon goes to jail and WWF and ECW is bought by WCW in the late 90s and then WCW closes in 01 because of the AOL/Time Warner. The wrestling industry would have no major promotion in North American. The only thing that would’ve existed was the indie’s and maybe TNA the following year which wasn’t a national based company.

Obviously the back catalog was worth more than what Vince paid for everything. Turner execs were too dumb to see what content would be worth in just a decade.
@ShadowAngel1860

Or read a vague rumor some promoters or even "(fans) got a hold of old territory belts.

If they found a network to pick up WCW what a storyline that would have been not to mention the revenue the PPV's between both companies WCW had some cool setups the machine opening doors was dope ,halloween havoc ,bash at the beach exc along with WWE more belts to go around more up coming superstars just a missed opportunity burying WCW didnt save wrestling it destroyed it tbh
Wrestling definitely went to crap when Vince bought the competition
War Eagle
When Thursday thunder went off dropped out of competition with SmackDown that's when the REAL SALE of WCW took place long before that Brother Bruce.
Was Heyman wrong?
And, if this is true, they bought WCW for less than 4 million?! Okay, it was over two decades ago, but a lot of people could have bought WCW apparently. Turner should have had an auction for the company and they probably would have gotten a better price. It might have been bought by Billy Corgan or another wealthy fan, but they may have paid a lot more.

I disagree with Bruce. The US Belt and the tag belts were sharp. The TV belt was 100x better than the Euro belt design. Not to mention that they ditched the WWF light heavyweight belt in favor of the cruiserweight title. The legacy behind Big Gold was certainly a major attraction.

Long as it's not a WWE production or we'll end up with more revisionist history.... Something based on actual facts by people who are not biased one way or the other..... DDP almost didn't make the "Best of Nitro" DVD's because WWE gave him a script full of falsehoods and they finally let him do it his way.... I'm sure this is the case with many WWE DVD's about any of their former competitors and even their own history....
Completely ruined the business. WCW should of been sold to someone who wanted to still compete with Vince at some point. Obviously it would if taken time but someone could of brought WCW back to relevance

Eric Bischoff was that guy. He was already all set to reinvent WCW, probably even with a new name.. but when the new potential owners saw WCW was a shell of its former self, they immediately backed down and left Bischoff out to dry..

@@radioVHS149Nope. Bischoff had the investors and they put up $50 million. They only stepped back because WWF COO Stuart Snyder's BFF Brad Siegel quickly cancelled the TV programming.

I always said it would have been so great ive they only got to 2004-2006 Bagwell, kronik, the wcw Legends,nwo Guys , kanyon , DDP so on and on could have had a perfect finished Wrestling Life. WCW died 5 years to early....
