Bruce Lee's Real Fighting Skills?!

Was Bruce Lee really good at fighting? Never seen a comprehensive video assessing it, giving him the fair analysis from all ends. The answer is, yes and no.
Yes, he was a superb athlete, but there is little evidence of him proving it against the best non-karate fighters. Technically speaking, his sparring and training footage would fail technical assessments... but that doesn't mean he can't fight!

You can't say someone is not a good fighter just because he/she is not professionally fighting in the ring. You brought up Bruce's fighting philosophy, which is much based off street fighting with life/death decisions and absolutely no rules. I agreed he may not be the best fighter in the rings if he ever entered into professional combat world; but fighting is not only about putting gloves on and get inside a ring mate.

The thing is, Bruce never declared himself to be a pro fighter or the best. He simply loved exercise and martial arts. He also strongly believed in improving one's body and mind. Hello ! May Allah protect and guide you to his light and happiness in this life and the hereafter, God bless, Ameen. Excuse me for giving a little presentation of Islam, because it is very misunderstood nowadays, especially on those « Antichrist's » times, where media and politics are mixed to distort history and truth. And terrorists (puppets of the Antichrist) who misinterpret verses, out of ignorance and political motivations, and take them out of historical context (just like radical atheists do by the way), don't help either. Thank you very much for your time. Islam is an arabic word that means the Surrender to the One and Only God, our Creator, Protector, Provider, who gives us life and all that we have, we are safe and sound by his will and grace, we are His and to Him we return, and we have to thank him in this trial life by submitting to him by our free will, or later in the Day of judgment when it's too late to save our own skin. Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them)… Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI). Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy. Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful. Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI). Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad). Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning! Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures. Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement. It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them. (19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad). Salam (Peace) ------------

Just imagine, he practiced MMA even before the UFC was founded. People who talk about Bruce Lee may not realize how strong and powerful he was compared to his size and people bigger than him. Also, there is a huge difference between fighting in the ring and fighting in the streets. Lastly, for those who say JKD wouldn't work, if you actually read the book of Jeet Kune Do, Bruce said that JKD is not the secret recipe to be the best. My Sifu and a group of students and I did a martial arts demonstration to promote his movie Sidekick. He came by after the demo and when he saw That my Sifu had trained under Richard Bustillo (one of Bruce Lee's famous students) took the entire group into one of the theaters and spoke with us and humbly, answered questions mostly about Bruce. I walked over and in a low tone apologized about the questions being mostly about Bruce and he smiled and said don't worry I have really enjoyed it. Then came an uncomfortable question from one of the young cute girls fortunately, she said do you think you could have beat Sijo Lee in a fight. He smiled looking down and then looked at the whole group. For reasons I can only imagine is honesty he said I don't know, but if I could it would not have been easy or pains that's for sure. Everyone laughed and my respect for a man I thought I could not admire more, grew. I understand the pressures he must of had to keep his reputation and brand as high as it has always been, but in this moment, he treated us all with the respect as martial artis despite the immense difference in experience, skill, and knowledge.

You're comparing apples to oranges. When real fighting was concerned, Bruce Lee wasn't about fighting in a ring, he was about fighting in reality. He was about ending things as quickly as possible and as efficiently as possible by attacking vulnerable areas of the body that he could fully exploit to achieve that outcome. He was not about fighting in a ring with rules and safety regulations to please a paying crowd over many rounds with big pillows on his hands. Believe it or not there's more to fighting than it being purely a spectator sport.

Bruce Lee used to record in his backyard his achievements before and after something in martial arts, as well as what the other person failed to do or had the opportunity to do. What I want to say here is the following, Bruce constantly studied the fighting techniques of “not doing”, a method of self-knowledge to improve himself. as in the case of the “interception of blows” that he always mentioned when he was alive. Those who don't train martial arts will probably be lost by my comment. At that time, which is very different from today, he didn't have as much access to information, so he filmed himself in the backyard of his house to perform such feats and study what could “not be done or done” in real combat or film.

He could be trash, middle of the road or top of the mountain. We’ll never know. I choose to remember him, not by his accomplishments as a potential fighter, but the inspiration he instilled in countless people. Many people who don’t practice martial arts can still learn from his philosophy and I think there is nothing more beautiful than being able to inspire those beyond your inner circle.

The most important point is the essence. The essence of what Bruce Lee developed. This means, if you equip the fastest and strongest athlete with Bruce's techniques, and if you also accommodate evolution (since the time that Bruce first developed his 'technique'), you can bet that the technique can take down anybody. You forget that martial arts at the highest level has no 'rules'. This means you can hit, kick, punch, elbow, etc in any which way you want. Also, you forget that in modern fighting, there is actually no need to use your body to physically touch your opponent, due to the existence of projectile 'weapons'. Basically, with a projectile weapon, you can take down anybody, or they can take you down, or you can take each other down.

Boxing trainer visiting Lee said he could be world champion. A martial artist visiting from Japan was asked his opinion of Bruce ... He knew all the masters : "Osoroshi!" / Terrifying. The hapkido master in Game of Death was a military trainer. He thought that Bruce was just an actor. He was shocked that 130 lb guy could lift him up at 180 lbs in the backbreaking scene. "He lifted me over and over take after take with ease and not tiring." Edit. The guy in Game of Death was arguably the founder of Hapkido...he definitely founder of Moo Sin Hapkido. He was S. Korean president's personal bodyguard (after GoD) In US he trained special ops and Secret Service. Ali said if Bruce entered boxing he would be world champ. Finally, Chuck Norris wrote to Bruce handwritten letter: it is a privilege to learn from you. You are master of martial arts. 👁️👁️

Can you provide any real proof of your claims like these people saying these things themselves or are you just quoting what you have heard from the scam artists? I have seen copies of the letter Norris wrote and despite the framing of narrative of the video around if, Norris never said that he was Lee’s student. Have you actually seen Ali say this about Lee on video and if so, would you be kind enough to share a link? And what boxing trainer said this of Lee and can you post a link of him saying this or is this just a quote from one of the false claims put out by one of the con men’s videos that you have bought into? Just because a martial artist is visiting from Japan doesn’t mean he represents “all the masters.” Ji Han-jae did film GAME OF DEATH with Lee, but even in his youth, I seriously doubt that he was 180 lbs. Do you have any proof or even any references for that? Or are your sources like the videos and channels who claim that Lee set all sorts of fictional world records? The ones that have been thoroughly debunked and completely fabricated by its authors who made it all up, but his fans still quote as if anything on said videos were even remotely true.

Not to take anything away from how great he was, but fighting in the ring with rules open up the possibility (and certainty) that you will lose, at some point. I believe Bruce Lee could have been the best in the world in any martial art he trained for, but through dedicated practice for the competition, hard work, and it would have been hard to stay on top, as it always is. He would have had wins and defeats, like everyone. He's only human and at that level everyone makes mistakes, no-one can win every time (as in any sport).

The World Championship Kickboxing event held in Tokyo, Japan, in 1975 made kickboxing and Thai Boxing famous.Bruce died in 1973. He believed in full contact sport and in fighting without a style. So he was way ahead of time. He grew up as a hothead streetfighter, practised different martial arts and many professional fighters testify about his greatness. Was he good? Yes! I've heard those close to Bruce Lee say He was an amazing street fighter, and that in truth is where all real fighters are tested. It is also said that his move to the states was prompted by his inability to keep his hands clear as a young person- he just wouldn't stop brawling. I competed for much of my young life- and was good by ring standards, but learned a valuable lesson at a gas station one winter evening. I changed my training methods after that, and eventually found a practical application for my newly acquired skill-set. I am a licensed private security contractor and executive protection specialist with 25 years in the field. I understand the premise of the Bruce Lee untested argument, but I know some PMC contractors and a few 321 Marines who would be upset with select comments. Don't disrespect the science good sir, Bruce (amongst others) developed a cross training i.e. mixed martial arts mentality that influenced countless generations. Every one of us- Pride, K1, Waka World, Virginia First Blood, 2 Keys, UFC, Pancrace, and a host of raw uncut no rules shoot fighters respect Bruce, and know that every win is a debt paid and a promise kept to the king of street fighters.

I’m a fan of Bruce Lee but his opponents in his street fights probably weren’t good fighters, probably the same with street fighters generally. Most Hong Kongers are physically not just short but very slim, also at this time a lot of Chinese went through a lot of struggles just to survive even starvation. Bruce Lee also had an advantage coming from a pretty wealthy family so he would have been well nourished although the diet probably would have still been quite poor. I’d think a lot of his opponents were from gangs too who wouldn’t really have trained to fight whilst he was at least practicing some martial arts.

One thing I'd like to point out and clarify and it has nothing to do with the video itself, Bruce Lee wasn't untrained. He was Untested in the ring, Agree with that, but not untrained. He was completely trained, in fact by some of the best masters in certain martial arts and not just that, he was self trained as well. He dedicated his life to self reflection of his Style and training, which to me is the most important trait for a martial artist. Maybe by modern MMA standards and standards of other martial arts and boxing rules.. his technique is a bit sloppy and doesn't pass the technical assessment, but that's the nature of marital arts in general its constantly evolving. And the most important reason why i think Bruce Lee would have excelled as a Martial Artist not just in those times but also in modern times, was coz of his Philosophy specifically towards martial arts and fighting. He was willing to adopt the best of each style into his own. He put no limitations or boundaries for himself and his style of fighting and this philosophy later became the corner stone of modern MMA.

I have read the Tao of Jeet Kune Do and the four "Bruce Lee's fighting method" books. The type of work out you see on the clip with the canvas bag is endurance based. Lee believed that all precision "skill" based training should be done whilst fresh. What you see here is just output of power for the sake of exercise. If you look at sparing footage you will see evidence of a modified Wing Chun centre line stance. Lee also believed in learning and unlearning continuously to derive at the "natural" and most fluid fighting method for an individual. Picking on someone pounding on a bag, footage that was never intended to be used for instructional purposes or demonstration is just stupid.

You can't claim to be "the best" under controlled conditions. Bruce Lee got into fights all the time during the making of his movies and in real life. No one was able to beat him. The only good technique is the one that wins and every fighter develops their own technique that is suited to their physique. That's why Bruce developed, Jeet kune do (the way of the intercepting fist).

well said and very true , i really did not think it had to be so much explained what you just said for others to understand aboute bruce , but the discussion and the talk aboute him goes on , and since he never fought in the ring to prove and show his skills , it seems he will never be accepted for what he was and could do . in the eyes of most people , for him to be taken for a good fighter , he really had to accept a fight in the ring towardes another fighter and win in any way possible , seems like a person cant be good at something unless mesured towards others , but thats just me and my personal opinion .

Bruce Lee NEVER claimed to be "The Greatest" martial artist, that unofficial title was given to him by his peers which some would say is an even greater accomplishment than Muhammad Ali achieved having given himself that title (The Greatest) even though it was true of him. Having stated that there is no archival footage of Bruce Lee actually fighting, you cannot pick apart his demonstration at a tournament, and say his stance maintenance, and recovery is weak, or that his strength isn't up to par to be a great fighter. (When demonstrating you do certain things that may not be perfect in a life or death situation, but to show a principal you have to demonstrate in a way that meets the needs of the situation / technique he is demonstrating) You know just as we all do that, training is a sloppy, ugly thing and you probably wont see the best of a fighter when he is discovering his own mistakes and weaknesses, and as far as his strength, you tell me from the footage, had he kicked that huge bag 10 times before that filming, or was that the very first set of kicks off a warm up (which makes a difference) I say with the lack of video evidence it is impossible to say Bruce was this or that if not for the stories, told by those who knew him and trained with him, and all the stories of the challenge matches that were constant... why can we not count witness accounts, into this equation. I say look at what he taught, what he actually taught and said NOT what you think he taught and said, look at that, and compare it to what you saw him do in his movies, books and manuals, practice the techniques yourself as he says do so and if the strategies, attacks, philosophies, and techniques work... then add them together in your own walk, and you have an amalgam that is a snapshot of the man himself. Meaning if you do one of these things for instance his one inch punch, become mechanically proficient at using it, understand what he said about WHEN to use it, train the muscle groups he trained to use it, keep in mind his strategies and philosophies, when it is all said and done use it as he did, use it on weighted bags and if you are moving a 100 lbs. in 1 inch as a novice, how much more so was Bruce able to move being a master. I dunno but I heard of an account where he hit a 300 lb. man and sent him flying if that isn't power i don't know what is. (if you take and develop al his techniques in this way and they are useful and powerful then the man was powerful himself case closed) The the question comes, why are there so many stories about him then?, why were all the stars flocking to him to learn? (and paying him a mint to do so), I love Chuck Norris, Joe Lewis, and Jim Kelly but the A crowd didn't flock to them for lessons like they did Bruce, so i think there must be something to all these stories. I say if you cant disprove it by recreating what he did as he did, the exact way he did it, and determining honestly that these things do not work, and cant be used, then let sleeping giants lay... (as far as him punching the heavy bag in a brawling fashion, look at a few things, he probably wanted to know what he looked like real time hitting as hard as he could, and where his weaknesses are, i say this because that is what I would wanna know, i don't think he was wearing gloves and he was hitting canvas and knocking that bag around like it was nothing (it would shred most peoples hands to do that), and he wasn't even winded while throwing multiple haymakers, not to mention his footwork when backing off the bag that was swinging back towards him maintaining perfect distance... also might he have just been blowing off steam while he pounded that bag? who uses perfect form blowing off steam? I think you were reaching with your critique of his form, but whatever helps you sleep at night, ya know)

Heck if you delve into his past you'll see less of a martial artist and more of an actor that sold the idea of a mystical chinese art to the west at the time were they ate it up like butter.
