Bleeker makes some strong points on how Bruce wrestled with the problems on with people that wanted to cash in him during WTD. Something tells me there’s more about the story, and how he tried to go out of the country to film WTD, and testing the waters about not paying the main guys who made him famous in Hong Kong.

I really enjoyed unsettled matters. I know a lot of fans were upset about it but for me I found it really interesting and gave me an insight of Bruce Lee the human being and not the legend, Plus this was all before the letters surfaced. Some fans still don’t believe the letters so they are never going to believe Tom. Take what you want from it , I really enjoyed it. In my own process looks like a nice collection piece, think I’ll pick that up myself.

So because Bruce had traits that weren’t great, like almost everyone, took drugs, much later on in the 70’s, and had a temper, or some how makes him a non legand and just human? What a shitty take.

@@TomBleecker Am I mistaken or did Wong & his students' account of that fight change significantly from 1980 when Official Karate magazine interviewed Wong Jack Man & his friends for an article & when Showdown In Oakland came out decades later? Have you read Striking Distance by Charles Russo, Mr. Bleecker? What I appreciate about that particular book is that the author seems to come from a neutral position, I didn't get the feeling he had any personal loyalty to any one camp.

@@BRUCEJJ66 I'm not familiar with WJM and his students changing their accounting of the encounter and haven't read Mr. Russo's book. I say "encounter" because after a fairly long period of the two men battling "no holds barred," both young men reported to work that evening, and neither one had so much as a scratch on them. The following day, when WJM learned that Bruce was telling people that he won, WJM took out a full-page ad in the Chinese newspaper challenging Bruce to a rematch, to which Bruce chose to not respond. I'm not suggesting that Bruce had any fear of a rematch. My sense is that he saw a rematch as a waste of his time.

@@TomBleecker David Chin, one of Wong's companions who was apparently an eye witness to this challenge match (who challenged who does seem to be open to debate) was quoted in Russo's book as saying, "I've always felt bad for Wong Jack Man, so I would tell people it was a draw." I never found Wong's account of he & Bruce having fought for around 20 minutes even remotely believable (professional MMA fighters, boxers, kickboxers, none of them fight all out for 20 minutes straight without breaks but these two guys did? Really?), Linda's version saying they fought for about 3 minutes after which Bruce was exhausted sounds way more credible to me.

Hi Stripey. A little anecdote. I stumbled across your channel randomly & watched a similar video of you reviewing books on Bruce Lee. I wouldn't say I'm the biggest Bruce Lee fan, but I've got all his movies on Blu ray & a few misc. items. But I do like books & you recommended the Treasures of Bruce Lee as your fave. Your review got me intrigued but it was OOP and going for silly money on ebay/Amazon. But several months later I saw it on a bookshelf in a charity shop for... £5! I bought it & been watching your channel since, not cuz Bruce Lee is an idol of mine, but your general entertainment value. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for these book reviews, Stripey, I'd been thinking about getting the new one from Shannon & the Lee Estate (In My Own Process, is it?) & that one celebrating ETD's 50th anniversary but I didn't know enough about them (they're both a bit pricey to just buy blind). The one from Shannon looks kind of nicely put together but it doesn't seem to have much new to offer, but I have ordered the ETD one, I'm looking forward to it. As for Tom Bleecker's book, Unsettled Matters certainly was an interesting read, whether I believed everything in it or not it was different from other Bruce Lee bios in that it didn't paint Bruce as the perfect idol other Bruce bios tended to, up until then.

I had the same exchange about their adherence to "historical accuracy"...which is BS because whatever quality the photos were, they looked better when they were taken. Adjusting the photos isnt changing "history", personally I think the book is not at all up to their usual standards, and not that it matters, but I have made my living as a graphic designer for 40 years and have worked on some rather substantial projects, and simply put, a bad photo printed on dull matte textured paper is going to yield a less than satisfactory result. I know what I am talking about. Personally, I think this book is the result of poor decisions, graphic design and quality control. A real missed opportunity. Too bad.

To clarify, before publishing "Unsettled Matters," I was threatened with two potential civil lawsuits by Linda Lee / Adrian Marshall (her attorney) and producer Raymond Chow. In response, my attorney, who had vetted the entire manuscript (which all three received a copy prior to publication), assured me that I would prevail in court - the truth being an absolute defense. Upon publication, neither Linda, Adrian Marshall, nor Raymond Chow went ahead with their proposed lawsuits.

This is from Tom Bleeker book. You just have to judge for yourself. "As a result of having temporarily discontinued his use of anabolic steroids, which he did not resume until December 1972 in preparation for Enter the Dragon in January 1973, Bruce had again shed nearly twenty pounds of muscle, and his face looked gaunt and pale. To many, the sight of Bruce wearing a washed-out yellow jumpsuit that hung on his frail body like a wet dish rag was heartbreaking. It was hardly coincidental that Game of Death was the only film starring Bruce Lee in which he did not appear bare- chested. As to his performance, the spark that had previously ignited a dynamic explosion of energy was poignantly absent, and in the scenes with his protege Dan Inosanto, the two men appeared evenly matched."

  • @axelstone3131

    @axelstone3131

    2 ай бұрын

First of all, Dan and Bruce were never “evenly matched” have we seen the same movie? Bruce’s movement is superior in every way to Dan’s, Second of all, you, nor Tom, can name the steroids, or the people who claim he took them. This is a huge red flag. Until you know what the compounds are, oral or injectable, and how long the cycles were, and who supposedly knew, there’s no evidence. Bruce lost weight for various reasons. He was taking cocaine, which increases metabolism. He wasn’t eating much. It was very hot during the time, he was stressed, over worked, probably not sleeping much. And his workouts and energy expenditure was much higher than the calories he was taking in. It’s no surprise he lost weight. If he took steroids, that’s fine. But until there is definitive proof of what he took, and for how long and who supposedly knew, it’s bullshit. Also, you can’t just decide to hop on steroids and stop taking them. You can permanently shut down your endocrine system which can cause a wide array of health problems. Based on Bruce’s activity from the 60’s and 70’s. He showed no adverse effects or symptoms of steroid use. If he used them he used them, but there is no physical signs of any usage. I know more than the average person, and Bruce shows nothing that cannot be achieved through diet and training, also, bear in mind hydration levels, how hot Hong Kong was at that time. If anything cocaine accelerated the weight loss and the lack of enough calories contributed.

I read unsettled matters many years ago, can’t remember many of the details now but I do remember it being very negative. Basically anything negative about Bruce all in one book. Can’t help but think bleecker only married Linda to get access to all his stuff for a couple of years. No real evidence for his clams. He’s put out vids on Bruce on KZread he seems like an odd guy. But would love to hear your thoughts on the book after you have read it

I saw this £8 cheaper on Amazon on release day so bought it. Was not sure about Tony Hawk but am happy with the book and the price. You have to pay for quality and the high end being the likes of Steve Kerridge. His books are very good and have a vast collection of his books. Nice video post Stripey well done and keep up the good work. Another good book is by Bey Logan called "Bruce Lee and I". A very good read for people who actually read books and not just looking at the pictures 🙂 Cheers Stripey ✌🏽

I had an old copy of the Tom Bleecker book. Sold it to another collector several years ago for a rather high price. I didn't particularly like the book. I felt it had a lot of false information in it.

As I mentioned in my above post, if there was any false information that qualified for libel or slander, I would have been sued. Second, you may have heard of my $25,000 challenge in which I offered to pay $25,000 to anyone who could prove the falsity of any statement made in my book. None ever took me up on my offer.

Tom got a lot of hate from the fanboys at the time because he dared to say Saint Bruce was abusing drugs 😱 There is some good stuff in the book especially about the rights to the films. Don’t think you’ll find that info anywhere else. Tom posted some good audio interviews on KZread which are definitely worth a listen. I’ve very little time for the stuff Shannon puts out. And what’s with Tony Hawks being included in the book 🤦 From your first look Stripey it might be worth a pick up when cheaper. Some good pics in there let us know about the text. Hope you had a good birthday buddy. You certainly got the Bruce goodies 📚

As an aside, in my book, which was published in 1996, I received a lot of flak for stating that Bobby Baker was Bruce's drug dealer. Nearly three decades later, when those drug letters went public, it turned out I was correct.

@@30plusfitnesstv I was initially asked to participate in the Bruce Lee episode of the TV show "Autopsy." After several telephone conversations with the producers, who were located in England, I eventually respectfully declined for a couple of key reasons. When the show aired, I wasn't surprised that Dr. Richard Hunter, the show's M.E., agreed with one of my two theories that Bruce's edema was caused by kidney failure brought on by his abuse of cortisone. Years later, I wondered if Dr. Hunter would have come to a different conclusion had he known about Bruce's heavy cocaine abuse, which is known to cause brain edema.

@@TomBleecker I recently watched ‘History's Greatest Mysteries’ I don’t see any of the Lee family in a rush to revisit Bruce’s death now the Bob Baker letters are out there. Do you have sense that Linda would have told Shannon the truth about their drug misuse in Hong Kong before Bruce’s death?

@@30plusfitnesstv I doubt it. Linda has always been a very positive person. As you most likely recall, when initially asked how she felt Bruce had died, she commented that she preferred talking about how he lived. Perhaps ironically, in the ensuing years, it would come to light that how Bruce lived impacted how he died.

Be cautious about Tom Bleeker, he makes a lot of silly assumptions in that book. It has been widely discredited by people. He makes the confusion between corticosteroids and anabolic steroids in that book. Confusing Bruce’s corticosteroid injections for his back injury, with anabolic steroids. Corticosteroids being used to treat inflammation.

@@TomBleecker Bruce Lee never took anabolic steroids. There is no evidence whatsoever, and if he did, what were the supposed compounds he used? How long were his cycles? I am completely disappointed with "In My Own Process." First and foremost, the picture quality on many of the photos is horrible. Awful. The "dull" paper stock kills the contrast and brightness and clarity of every photo. Plus, as I was told by a rep of Genesis Publications, that they do NOT "correct" photos in photoshop or any photo program. "For historic integrity." I was told. This is quite simply BS. Every photo SHOULD have been carefully adjusted, for color, contrast, clarity, exposure, gamma and any and all levels. I ordered my "collector copy" that was supposed to ship over a YEAR ago, and it has been delayed again. Seeing as the "retail" copy was released before the copy I paid $300 bucks for, kinda irritates me. And now having SEEN the book, it irritates me even more. This book is frankly NOT WORTH THE WAIT. I have a few other Genesis books, and have seen others, and they were all top notch. For $40 bucks retail copy... its hardly worth it. For HARDCORE collectors only. This Bruce Lee book is a HUGE misfire and far from "essential."
