i've never seen French toast made with sourdough bread. I think that would taste odd. Plain white bread or better, brioche. Definitely need lots of cinnamon added to the egg mixture. Honestly, best is topped with butter, powdered sugar, and syrup. Fruit and whipped cream is pretty, tastes ok, but simple butter while it's hot spread across to melt, then powdered sugar and lots of syrup. Eat it while it's hot.

I'm from the Chicagoland area and I've never seen French Toast done that way. Ours is eggs, about 1 tablespoon of milk per egg used, vanilla is optional and mixed together with a whisk or fork. We just use regular sandwich bread (square), dip both sides, and cook on a griddle or in a large fry pan in butter, shortening, or coconut oil until golden brown on both sides. We top ours with butter and syrup of your choice. I've used real maple syrup, pancake syrup, or a flavored syrup like cherry, blueberry, etc. In a restaurant you might get fresh fruit or fruit compote and whipped cream on top of your french toast. It might have powdered sugar sprinkled on top. Some restaurants might use fancier bread but most just use regular sandwich bread. French toast is definitely for breakfast (unless you're having breakfast for dinner 😁) and I might also serve bacon, sausage, or ham on the side. Oh and we definitely eat it with a knife and fork.

Two years ago, my aunt bought crumpets at our local grocery store, and I tried my first crumpet for the first time. If I had to compare french toast to anything for Brits, it would be a crumpet. I'm certain you're already finding out that different regions of the country have different ways of preparing our meals. My tradition is real butter melted on the french bread with maple syrup. To the side we would have whipped cream and fruit, so you can add or not to the main bread. Again, I'm from the South - we're finicky. 😀

French toast is a sweet breakfast food. I make it with brioche sliced to at least 1" thickness. It doesn't need to be soaked, just a quick dip, flip and into the pan. I like to serve mine with sliced strawberries macerated in sugar and whipped cream, but served with maple syrup and butter is the way I remember them from childhood. Add a couple fried eggs, sausage links, strips of American bacon, some hash browns and a glass of orange juice and mug of coffee and you have a full Sunday breakfast.

Whenever my mother made French Toast she never actually "soaked" the bread -- she just dipped it into one egg/milk dish (first one side, then the other) and then popped it in the pan. We ate ours with butter and maple syrup -- no fruit -- but I know that is how they do it in restaurants now. And because of the maple syrup being messy we always ate it with a knife and fork. If you get farm eggs that aren't washed, you don't have to refrigerate them. Once you do refrigerate them, they need to stay refrigerated. If you get your eggs from the local grocery chain, those are washed and refrigerated, and you'll have to keep them refrigerated at home.

In the UK, Europe, and Mexico, even the eggs in the chain grocery stores are unwashed and do not require refrigeration. This is the case in most countries around the world except the U.S. and Canada. The eggs in U.S. and Canadian chain grocery stores are washed and require refrigeration. Washing the eggs removes a protective coating on them called the cuticle or the bloom, which prevents the eggs from spoiling at room temperature, which is why washed eggs need to be refrigerated.

@@richardpare3538 According to an April 2023 Spruce Eats article entitled "Why Are Eggs Refrigerated in the US but Not in Europe? Washing eggs makes them more susceptible to contamination" some chickens in other parts of the world that do not wash the eggs are vaccinated against salmonella. In addition, the intact protective coating (aka the cuticle or bloom) reduces the chances of salmonella entering the egg. According to Tiffany Swan, food scientist and chef, “salmonella isn’t as common in Europe [as in the US, and] hens may be vaccinated against salmonella. Plus, eggs aren’t cleaned with water so the protective coating stays intact, lowering the chances of salmonella entering the egg." The article indicates that in addition to the U.S. and Canada, which I mentioned previously, Japan and Sweden also wash their eggs. In the U.S., if you buy eggs from a local egg farmer that sometimes have traces of a feather or are never cold, the farmer may not be required to wash eggs or refrigerate them thanks to state laws. Swan advises that you wash local eggs with warm water and soap before using them. “Don't use cold water and don't submerge them, as this can push bacteria through the shell into the egg,” she says. Le says local eggs can be left on the counter as long as they aren't chipped or cracked, but as soon as the egg is washed at home it should be used immediately or refrigerated to minimize the risk of salmonella. Once an egg, no matter its origin, has been refrigerated, keeping it refrigerated until you’re ready to use it is important. If you leave a washed, refrigerated egg out at room temperature, throw it out if more than two hours have passed, explains Swan. “The risk of the bacteria proliferating at room temperature is pretty high, if it is present,” she says.

With optional maple syrup. Nothing inherently wrong with how you guys prepared yours. It's just different from what I expect from "French toast".

I speculate that the major difference in appearance stems from the amount of egg-wash that gets cooked with the bread. I suspect the French toast in my area is prepared with less time soaking up the egg and more thoroughly dripped off before cooking. It ends up with a more cake-y and less bread-omelet-y consistency. (But, again, there's nothing wrong with a different style of French toast. It's just different.)

It’s a wide, flat loaf so the slices are shaped differently than most of us are probably used to. I personally haven’t ever considered using sourdough. Seems like a strange combo with the sweet sugar/vanilla and fruit, but apparently it’s common because not many people have commented on the use of the sourdough bread for the French toast🤷‍♀️

I never seen French toast like this unless u go to a nice breakfast place , I grew up with my granny making French toast really basic but amazing (egg wash the bread then on pan then take it off and add cinnamon and some sugar , can’t get better then that) This version of French toast adds powder sugar and sometimes fruits which I mostly seen at breakfast places Texas version is just a basic egg, cinnamon and some sugar with the bread.

It's better to turn the fresh fruit into a quick compote. Keeps all those little berries and fruit chunks from rolling all over the place when you're trying to corral them for a bite. One really quick way to "compotize" fresh fruit is to stir it into a complementary flavor of store-bought fruit spread (not jam or preserves -- way too much sugar and not a good texture, I think). For example, last spring and early summer I had a crazy-big black raspberry harvest at my house. I stirred bunches of them, just plucked off the brambles and washed, into Crofters-brand "Blueberry Blast" fruit spread and used it for single-serving trifles. Some of the best stuff on Earth!!

Maple syrup is by far the the most common topping for French toast here in the USA followed by fruit with whipped cream but rarely fruit by itself. A good alternative for bread is French bread or ciabatta or Texas toast and Iearned over 40 years ago that when you mix the eggs and milk don’t mix it all the way just until blended with some streaks of yoke. I learned this from a family friend who was born and raised in France. Anybody who thinks this won’t work try it I’ve using the partially mixed method from a teenager to now at 60 and I will never go back to completely mixing the egg mixture ever again

Half that vanilla. Add cinnamon to the egg mixture. The fruit is optional, try some with and some without but add a little bit of powdered sugar and some maple syrup to either.

One of the beauties of French Toast is the variety of toppings you can use. French Toast is usually topped with a sweet such as honey, syrup, powdered sugar, syrup and powdered sugar, or whipping cream or whipped topping. You can also forgo the fruit. You can go with Nutella or nut butters and syrup. You can do different fruit combos. Popular ones include Strawberry and Banana, Banana and Chocolate, Banana and Nutella/Peanut butter, Blueberries, Berries Mixes such as Blackberry, Raspberry, and others, Pineapple and the list goes on. You can add nuts as well, so a Chocolate Banana Nut is one of my favorite. You can also use the French Toast in Sandwiches, such as Sausage, Egg and Cheese or Ham Egg and Cheese.

From new England absolutely needs maple syrup, or if you're going the fruit route then you need whipped cream and powder sugar. This is what my family eats for breakfast on Christmas Day,. Ingredients Bananas Foster Topping 6 Tbsp salted butter ¼ cup dark brown sugar, packed 3 bananas, cut into 1-inch slices 4 Tbsp spiced rum Bananas Foster Bread Pudding 12oz French bread, stale and cut into 1-inch cubes 3 bananas, cut into ½-inch slices 4 large eggs, lightly beaten 2½ cups whole milk 1 cup heavy cream 4 Tbsp salted butter, melted 1 Tbsp spiced rum 1 Tbsp pure vanilla extract ½ cup dark brown sugar, packed 1 tsp ground cinnamon Rum Caramel Sauce 6 Tbsp salted butter ½ cup dark brown sugar, packed ½ tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp pure vanilla extract ¼ cup spiced rum ¼ cup heavy cream Directions Bananas Foster Topping In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the brown sugar until melted. Add the banana slices and sauté for about a minute. Then add the rum and simmer for 3-5 minutes, stirring often. Remove from the heat. Bananas Foster Bread Pudding Preheat oven to 375°F. Spray a 9x13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Spread the stale bread cubes evenly in the baking dish. Mix 3 sliced bananas into the bread until evenly distributed. (I did one layer of bread, topped with a layer of sliced bananas, and then another layer of bread cubes.) In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, butter, rum, vanilla, brown sugar, and cinnamon until combined. (Ensure there are no lumps. I used an immersion blender to ensure the mixture was completely smooth.) Pour the egg mixture all over the bread and bananas in the baking dish. Press the bread down and tilt the dish from side-to-side to evenly coat the bread so it soaks up the egg mixture. Pour the bananas foster topping on top of the bread pudding and ensuring the bananas are evenly distributed. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until the custard is set, but it still jiggles a little and the edges of the bread have browned. Rum Caramel Sauce In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sugar and cinnamon and whisk until the sugar is melted. Add the vanilla, rum, and cream. Simmer the sauce, whisking constantly, until the sauce has thickened, about 5-7 minutes. Take the sauce off the heat until ready to serve. To serve, scoop the warm pudding onto dessert plates or into bowls. Top each serving with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream, drizzle with the rum caramel sauce, and serve immediately.with out the rum sauce and ice cream but makes a restaurant quality dessert if added.

As a chicken is laying an egg, she releases a fluid, called "bloom" that coats the egg and dries immediately, sealing it from contamination. Washing the egg removes that protection and like any open container, it then needs refrigeration. In the US, commercial farmers are legally required to wash eggs before packaging, supposedly to prevent salmonella, which has never really been a problem from unwashed eggs, but more from eating raw egg. But they passed the law anyway, so all eggs in the US must be washed and refrigerated before being sold commercially. In the UK, washing eggs isn't required by law, so they don't need refrigeration. Fresh laid eggs will keep on the counter for a couple of weeks or longer.

French bread is called pain perdu (lost bread) in French, and was a way to thriftily save day-old, stale bread. (You know how fast real French bread dries out.) Nowadays most people don't use old bread, but I tend to. Even regular bagged bread gets dryer, thus soaks up more of the egg mixture. Fork and knife, always buttered while hot out of the pan, then topped with maple syrup, or any other syrup, powdered sugar, honey, whatever sounds good! I grew up with Mom using egg, milk, and salt & pepper. ?? LOL. I don't measure, but don't use sugar. Just vanilla, cinnamon, and sometimes some cardamom with the milk and eggs. If you use a sturdy enough bread like your sourdough - nom! - you can soak it long enough that the inside gets almost custardy in contrast with the crisp outside. Also check out some breakfast casseroles made with bread instead of hash brown or tater tots. Layers of buttered bread, cooked bacon and/or sausage, fried onions, maybs grated cheese, then several cups of milk and eggs mixed together and poured over all. Usually left to soak in the baking dish in the fridge overnight, then into the oven for breakfast. Savory instead of sweet, also delicious!
