Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Inc., doing business as simply Cracker Barrel, is an American chain of restaurant and gift stores with a Southern country theme. The company was founded by Dan Evins in 1969. Its first store was in Lebanon, Tennessee; the corporate offices are located at a different facility in the same city. The chain's stores were at first positioned near Interstate Highway exits in the Southeastern and Midwestern United States, but expanded across the country during the 1990s and 2000s. As of September 16, 2020, the chain operates 663 stores in 45 states.
Cracker Barrel's menu is based on traditional Southern cuisine, with appearance and decor designed to resemble an old-fashioned general store. Each location features a front porch lined with wooden rocking chairs, a stone fireplace, and decorative artifacts from the local area. Cracker Barrel partners with country music performers. It engages in charitable activities, such as its assistance to victims of Hurricane Katrina and injured war veterans.
During the early 1990s, the company became the subject of controversy when founder and CEO Dan Evins instituted an official company policy prohibiting the hiring of any individual whose "sexual preferences fail to demonstrate normal heterosexual values." Following massive public backlash and large shareholders such as the New York City Employee Retirement System threatening to vote out the entirety of upper management, the company reversed the policy.

I'm an American that's been living in the UK for the past 10 years. I live in Manchester and have been as far south as London, as far north as Northumberland, as far west as Llandudno, N. Wales, and just recently as far east as Scarborough and many other places in between. I have never, and I mean never, had an eye-rolling experience with British Food. No matter where I travel, breakfast is always the same, tired Full English. Some restaurants will serve pancakes or dry sandwiches, but nothing compares to the variety of restaurants in the US. Every region of the country has its own personality as it relates to cuisine, and every region makes food that simply makes you swoon because your taste buds are leaping for joy in your mouth. Lastly, I beg of you, stop eating biscuits just by themselves. Open them up, slather butter, jelly, honey, apple butter, or syrup on them, or have them with sausage gravy. Stop eating dry a$$ biscuits and try to judge them solo.

There are so many different dishes that I wish you could try. Everytime I see you enjoying what Americans take for granted, it makes me step back and think about how lucky we have it. Your baby will hopefully remember this trip. You've tried so many different things. Thank you for allowing us to see you enjoying the food and the time you're spending as a family. I have to tell you a true story about my brother and sister in law who are from Clarence Center, NY ..... they decided to come down to Florence, SC for the first time to visit (many years ago) and on the way down, they stopped in Virginia to get something to eat. They stopped in at a Cracker Barrel restaurant because they wanted to try something new, placed their order and waited. Their waitress walked by in a hurry and turned to them and said in a very southern accent "Ya'llzl be up in a minute!" acknowledging that their order was almost ready and would be delivered to them soon. My brother told me he looked at Bonnie (my sister-in-law) and said "I didn't order any YA'LLZL.... did you?!!!!" They don't speak "southern".... lol!!! Glad you enjoyed your meal there.... now I"m "dribblin'"!!

My cousin leans over and says ' Um, yeah, you sure about that?" Now, don't get me wrong, he is from Baltimore. I said " You're kidding, right?" He says " they are bottom feeders". I damn near puked from laughing so hard. " Your a city boy from Baltimore, I'm a redneck from Missouri, what the hell do you think shrimp and crab are?" Boy, I've drank more beer fishing than you have drank, grabbing crawdads for bait. Snagging a turtles during night fishing a making turtle soup. Introduce him to deer steaks, and he can't get enough. This year I'm taking him catfishing😂😂😂

At our house it was the traditional fried Chicken. After church, my dad would take us kids for our weekly Sunday drive while my mom fried the chicken. We would have rice and gravy, homemade biscuits, green beans, corn on the cob and sometimes mac and cheese. We would usually have some type of cobbler for dessert. My mom will be 95 in November and she still makes the best fried chicken I've ever had.

I love a good fireplace but where I live..the house doesn't have one and it's hard to find the proper location for one cause they have to be installed in certain ways...at this point I'm looking into getting a wood fired stove as it would be easier to put in than a full on fireplace. So I love going when they have that big fireplace a crackling and snapping, I'll stand in front and warm up before I go back out into the cold after eating and heading home.

We pulled into one in Tennessee one late night after the store had closed, Next morning at 7:00 am there was a knock on our door. Expecting to be hassled we were pleasantly surprised when we were greeted by the manager with a menu and two large cups of coffee. As an aside, whenever you order fried okra in any restaurant...asked for it crispy. El Mirage, Arizona

As a New Yorker, I didn't grow up eating most of the Cracker Barrel specialties, and many of them were first time experiences for me (like catfish). That said, the first CB I went to was off the Interstate Highway in North Carolina some 20 years ago. I've been eating at Cracker Barrels regularly since then, ate most of their menu choices, and it's all good. You get a reasonably priced, consistently well prepared food.

We're Americans, and we've been going to Cracker Barrel for over 25 years. "Back in the day" there weren't that many Cracker Barrel restaurants, they have greatly proliferated over the past ten years. It is our preferred stop certainly for breakfast or lunch. In fact, when my wife and I are on a road trip, every time we see a Cracker Barrel billboard or sign we look at each other and say "Cracker Barrel." I was surprised the last time we visited Cracker Barrel because they were now serving beer and wine--that is a very new addition. Not consequential for us, we go to Cracker Barrel for the food. My favorite is the ham (country or sugar cured) with macaroni and cheese and green beans or corn. I've never been disappointed at a Cracker Barrel with the food or the service.

Cracker Barrel is alright. At the end of the day they’re a big chain and not capable of matching the quality of the mom and pop owned restaurants but you won’t leave disappointed either. Catfish is a freshwater fish that’s common in American lakes and rivers. Her description of it as having an earthy flavor is spot on. How good catfish is depends a lot on the breading and the oil it’s cooked in which varies from place to place. I enjoy it if it’s good but really hate it when it isn’t. I agree with the hubby about white gravy. It really adds a lot to any type of breaded and fried meat except fish. It’s super simple to make yourself also. If you really wanna taste something great try using bacon grease to make your gravy or use the grease from your fried chicken and you’ll have little crunchy bits of the chicken breading in your gravy which is awesome!

You know, I've eaten catfish for many many years, and like all fish, it has it's own distinct flavor, but both your description as musty and Mrs. H as earthy really describe it's taste well. Now I know how to describe it to people who have never eaten it. Love it myself! People get catfish wrong by saying it's a bottom feeder like it lives on eating poop or something. If you'd caught as many as I have on live minnows and shiners as well as bass lures from crankbaits to rubber worms you'd know that description isn't really true. One of the best baits is a live Bluegill! They are predators and also very hardy fish able to live in water and conditions that maybe other fish can't.

The meatloaf is my favorite. My favorite thing to do is cut a biscuit in half, butter it up, and then spoon some fried apples onto the biscuit and put the top back on and eat it like a little sandwich. The butter in the biscuit, the butter you add to it, and the touch of butter in the fried apples blend together to buttery goodness. The fried apples are basically heated up apple pie filling. Real fried apples (pan fried in butter with a sprinkle of sugar and cinnamon) don't produce a sauce like that at all. The hashbrown casserole is good. They used to sell porkchops, but they stopped. Their breakfast is also good, but not spectacular. I love getting the rootbeer, they bring you a chilled mug to pour it in that's so cold, flakes of ice form when you pour the bottle into it.

Okra is an interesting plant. It's related to Aloe Vera, so it has a bunch of slime in it. I always make a mess when cutting it up. It's good for using in soups and gumbo as a thickener. Used to go to Cracker Barrel all the time when I was a kid. They used to sell Beanie Babies during the Beanie Baby hype. We'd have a weekend dinner then go shopping for the ones that would be "max resale value." I was never sold on the resale thing as a kid. I just wanted more Beanie Babies to play with. Step-dad had to bribe me with one of my own so I wouldn't make a fuss at him. Good times were had there.
