British Warrior IFV - Overview and Opinions

The Warrior tracked vehicle family is a series of British armoured vehicles, originally developed to replace the older FV430 series of armoured vehicles.
The tracked IFV known to the British Army as the Warrior was originally known as MCV-80. It was intended to replace the old FV432 armored personnel carrier. This vehicle was developed from the 1970s onwards. A series of pre-production prototypes built in the early 1980s. Production by GKN Defence commenced during 1986. The Warrior has been in British Army service since 1988, seeing combat in the Gulf in 1991 and during Iraq war. Production of this armored vehicle ceased in 1995. The original order was for over 1 000 units but Army reorganizations reduced that to 789 of all types sufficient to equip seven Mechanized Infantry battalions. The British Army plans to operate these armored fighting vehicles until 2035.
The base model is the Warrior Section Vehicle armed with non-stabilized 30-mm Rarden cannon and coaxial 7.62-mm machine gun in a two-man turret. The main gun fires armor-piercing and HE-FRAG rounds. It is capable of destroying enemy armored personnel carriers at ranges of up to 1 500 m. It can also engage low-flying helicopters.
The Warrior IFV has an all-welded aluminum armor hull and laminated steel armor turret. It provides all-round protection against 14.5-mm armor-piercing rounds. Font arc is likely to withstand 25-mm armor-piercing rounds. During military conflicts vehicles are fitted with extra passive armor panels for protection against RPG rounds. But these are not normally carried during peacetime operations. This armored fighting vehicle is also fitted with NBC protection system.
The seven troops carried enter through a door in the hull rear. Passengers enter and leave the vehicle via rear doors. Once they are inside there are sufficient combat supplies carried to maintain them in action for at least 48 hours. There are no firing ports in the hull in order to improve armor protection.
The Warrior IFV is powered by a Perkins CV8 TCA turbocharged diesel engine, developing 550 hp. Engine is located at the front. It is mated to an Allison 4-speed automatic transmission. Engine and transmission are built in one module and can be replaced in field conditions within 40 minutes. Warrior is fast for its class of vehicles. With a maximum road speed of 75 km/h it can keep up with Challenger 2 MBTs over the toughest terrain. Warriors may be fitted with dozer blades or light mine-clearing ploughs.
The British Army also operates a Warrior Mechanized Artillery Observation Vehicle (MAOV) on which the only turret armament is a 7.62-mm machine gun and a dummy cannon barrel. There are two repair and recovery vehicles, the Warrior Mechanized Recovery Vehicle (Repair) (MCV(R)) and Mechanized Combat Repair Vehicle (MCVR), both armed with a single 7.62-mm machine gun and equipped for their roles with winches, cranes and other equipment.

And, as you have no doubt read, it very nearly was posthumously ... I remember one Remembrance Sunday, in the march past the Cenotaph, as usual, at its head was the Chelsea Pensioners, in the their stunning red tunics. There is an unwritten tradition that those awarded the Medal of Honor (the American equivalent to the VC) is saluted, irrespective of their rank, by any active service member, regardless of their rank, because of it being their highest military honour. Beharry is a good guy, to this day everything he does is for the lads of our unit, 1pwrr and the army as a whole. I was one of the patrol commanders on foot patrol when we walked into a 300 degree ambush by the militia, well over 150 insurgents and us, two multiples of 12 on a patrol, split up on both sides of the river tigris. It was my mate who was shot through the lung next to me and i called in the casevac which beharry was the driver of the QRF team that came to us. Our base cimic house (worth a read up on) had snipers taking out insurgents from at least 700m to 1000m from what they could see allowing us to fight our way out of there to an extraction point and get back. In that two hour firefight we didnt lose a man but they did, lots. Good day to be a infantry fighting soldier.

Having a mechanic that actually worked on the vehicle is a very cool bonus. Nothing is better for the civvy military buff than hearing from a bloke that has been there and done that. The first Battlegroup Attack with 2 Sqns of Challenger and a battalion of Warriors was pretty awe inspiring, and over and done with a LOT quicker than normal! :)

I had this on arma 2 survival server/not dayz and the first time I got the tank I fell in love with it. The speed made it hard to hit form far by other tanks and relocating was a dream. Having the tow missiles fire and switching to the main cannon always made the enemy tank panic and before they can do anything they where dead. The thermals made it hard for the enemy everything to target unnoticed even peaking out of a building. The main cannon is everything you ever need to take down enemy's on foot from far even awesome at aa. For the longest time I thought this tank was made in the 2000's from how advanced everything felt just a well put together tank.

One of my fondest memories as a child was when I was in the Army Cadet Force, and we got to go on a training weekend with the Territorial Army, as it was called back then. We got set up in a training FIBUA(my first time in one) with cadet rifles and blank rounds, and were told to play "bad guy" for the TA's room clearing exercises. But the best part of it all was the Warrior that they had brought with them, complete with its own blank fire ammunition and barrel.. We got to ride in it from one area to the other, and when the "fighting" started during the night, it all started when the TA opened fire with that automatic cannon. Not quite as awe-inspiring as some other battlefield sounds, but as a 14-year-old hearing a cannon fire for the first time, I still get chills when I see these babies in action. I hope to be serving alongside them some day soon, joining up with the Armour Brigade.. Maybe I'll spot one through the periscopes of the Challenger 2 ;) P.S. yes, my inspiration for joining up with the regulars was thanks, in part, to your wonderful videos. Please keep it up, you're making wonderful content here and we all love you for it. Thank you for your service, and thank you for continuing to serve in your own way through these videos.

Was a dismount on telic 10 with the 2nd battalion royal Welsh. On my second op an efp ied smashed through the engine block and disabled the vehicle. Section commander (fellow dismount in the back next to me) got knocked out from the blast and had to get evacuated along with crew but everyone was OK. Didn't feel 100 percent safe inside and a few guys died in our battlegroup died from ied blasts inside them but felt so much safer than I would in a snatch which i was in on telic 7. Driver in my platoon was killed by a sniper on a strike op in basrah City in the early hours of the night, his name was Barber and had left his hatch open for ten minutes to let his sweat evaporate.

We had those rubber flaps above the tracks on the M113-series. Nobody put them on. In the motor pool, every platoon has a small CONEX, and that's where we always kept them.

Rather late, but a fantastically informative video. For my sins, for my day job, I design 144th scale armour for 3D printing for wargaming and am working on the Warrior currently. (Well, specifically at this point making a spirited attempt to work on the variants - FV511 at this moment it time - which is of course quite difficult, especially given that they are supposed to look like each other!) Finding a video that actually points out things like the fire extinguishers triggers and camo-netting is incredible because now I actually know what the bits are I was modelling and the little things like clonking the turret if the hatch is open is just the sort of details you don't get from sources usually.

I have subscribed to your channel because you have become my GOTO guy for all things British. I like the fact that the Warrior lacks gunports for the infantry crewmen. In the US we tried them on the Bradley but we found that, firing through the gunport of a moving vehicle, the average soldier couldn't hit the side of a barn even if you were driving right next to it. I do have questions about the lack of a drop-down ramp. Were there specific reasons that the MOD opted not to install one? Was the decision tactical or expense driven? Or maybe something else?

Great video. Very impressive, especially the speed, obvious good ride and the armour package looks very effective. Downside, the lack of stab for the RARDEN gun, means you have to stop to fire accurately, but not a big issue. I always wondered what that rectangular hatch was on the left of the hull. Now I know.

I really like the animated intro and outro. I have questions! When it comes to requiring upgrades to certain equipment or even outright replacement with a new system, how much input do the soldiers or personnel using the equipment have? The government is responsible for providing the funding for the upgrades etc, but do they ask the people on the ground their opinions?

completely agree with you matsimus. this is by far the best viehcle the British army has, and I'm glad you share my view. I was CR2 during Iraq, and I use to watch warrior all the time, so agile and nimble in the urban environment. this completely out performed cr2 in Iraq. yes we had the bad boy presence, but this machine is a true work horse. the. up armour package is every bit as good as cr2 as well. The dirty sound that boxer engine puts out is a delight. in gutted the Radon conon is going but if it keeps this beast going into the future then it's worth it. this machine and it's crew saved my life on a couple of occasions when we were dismounted from cr2 as the presence was not needed, and to say it's embarrassing when infantry mongs come to the rescue of armoured soldiers doing an infantry role, well.... I can see where they are going with Ajax, I just hope it's on a level with warrior or better.

Does it create an issue though with only having 7 soldier capacity? UK Army much like the Australian's use 8 Man sections in their Infantry Battalion's/Regiments. If its a Mechanised Infantry Regiment I know it wont matters as they utilise 7man sections. I'm sure its fine but what if you need to be tasked to supporting other Light Infantry units who don't use such a TOE? You might have some insight Matsimus as I've only dealt with Australian Army vehicles. We have the same issue when we operate ASLAV's as they only seat 6, although for our Bushmaster IMV's it seats 9 passengers so the problem become irrelevant as we use them more for infantry manoeuvres.

Great video, thanks! I've heard that it's not unknown for soldiers to lose an arm or leg if that rear hatch closes on it. Does it really need to be powered? I assume it's just too heavy to open and close by hand? Also, I was wondering why UK Warriors never went down the route of adding TOW missiles, like the Kuwaiti ones did. I get that you said it just wasn't UK doctrine to use them that way, but it seems like a significant bit of firepower lost. Wondering if perhaps the real reason is the added cost and complexity missiles would bring, along with reduced space inside if reloads were carried. Anyway, great vid. Would love to see one that went into detail on the new upgrades and new turret when they get into service.

Graham Kennedy the main reason for not including more firepower is that the brittish army essentially use these as battlefield minibuses and these are always supported by Chalenger which has all the firepower you could ever need

  • @iatsd

Graham Kennedy If you give them a weapon then they'll use it. You don't want to go drawing attention to yourself by encouraging them to play tank or tank killers. Tank killing, if really needed, is what the self loading cargo is there for. The design concept really is battle taxi.

Most modern AFV's have stabilised main armament. It means that the gun stays locked on to the target even if the vehicle is going over rough ground, so it can fire accurately on the move. The Rarden can't be fired on the move if you want to hit the target.
