Unmanned Ground Vehicles | DRONE WARFARE

Unmanned ground vehicles or ground drones are pretty amazing bits of tech! Are they going to become a prominent asset on the modern battlefield? I think we are already there.

And in the last clip we have case of the Michael Bay syndrome, which goes like this: a special forces operator is not special enough, unless they at some point emerge dramatically from water, looking like they dont mind getting wet, because they are so special, and in fact this heroic feat is signal to the audience, that these guys are so tough they are twice as dangerous when wet and with mandatory Hans Zimmer tunes blaring louder and louder on the background, we are fast approaching the moment, when the excrements are nearing the air conditioner!

Anti-tank drones roll in to eliminate armor, .50 cal drones with thermal vision take out snipers, AT and MG nests, Support drone brings in mortars and guided short-range rockets for supports and to soften up the rest of the enemy, Infantry moves in as airborne drones provide overwatch and remote targeting. Drone mules bring up ammunition and gear for all units after the objective is secure.

The issue with unmanned vehicles is the connection to them. I've always wondered how effective electronic countermeasures would be against them. With a ground vehicle it would be much easier to get jamming equipment in places that would totally cut the connection between the operator and the drone. Rendering it unoperational

Makes me wish i could prove this in ukraine, speed across the raspitutsa would kill them. follow it with the troops to hold and encircle them. they are building them to heavy and to tall at present. the ones at the end of the video had the best potential; light, fast, low, and easy to produce and repair.

@Matthew Fritz : It is on offensive operations where this type of system will be most useful. It can't be suppressed, it is disposable in ways a soldier isn't (quickly repaired, no loss of experience), It doesn't get tired, lose stamina, or need to eat. You can effectively rotate units back and forth for resupply and rotate operators in order to keep the operational tempo going on way beyond the breaking point (endurance, morale, and logistics) of a regular force. Commanders will have no qualms assigning them high risk missions they'd be reluctant to assign a human troop. Note also that you can assign as commanders and operators experienced soldiers that are off the field due to a physical disability or are past their prime fighting age. You can end up with a unit that can outfight the enemy in both, physical and mental terms.

I think the future of UGV's is actually in the optionally manned department. I think the focus on crew survivability will eventually be eclipsed by the capabilities of armor defeating weapons, and at that point the focus will move to taking the crew out of the equation entirely. Optionally manned is a fantastic thing on the modern high tempo battlefield, allowing the vehicle to take a risk that the crew doesn't have to take. The crew would become the maintenance guys who ride along, essentially (and that's already kind of what they are, no offense man). This is going to be huge for crew survivability in an increasingly deadly fight.

Couldn’t an opposing force just screen there lines with mines to keep these things away? 2: could fights in the future be between opposing drone teams? 3: arnt these just 21st century tankeets? Wouldn’t they the same issues tankeets had in the past, like weak armor and range?

An interesting idea would be to link automated weapons systems like this to designators on the weapons of the infantry. If you don't want a robot to decide what targets can be engaged, instead allow a squad leader to designate targets on the fly by naturally engaging them. No matter how good your camera systems, the guys with their heads out in the air can have a better situational awareness than someone behind remote controls. Being able to point and have a heavy weapon engage instead of having to tell a remote operator would probably be more effective.

A typical infantryman's loadout for a 3-5 day patrol: Uniform, including boots-5-10lbs. M240B-25lbs. 800-1200 7.62 rounds-20lbs (give or take). ACH, IOTV (with plates), attachments and misc gear, ammo and water-about 45-60lbs. Loaded rucksack with enough gear, food and supplies for a 3-5 day patrol-about 75-90+lbs. Total weight: 120-160lbs. (All estimations and vary greatly depending on the soldier, unit, location and type of patrol). I think the mule idea is a good one. The weight of all the gear that soldiers are being required to carry nowadays is to the point where people are wearing out their backs, knees, joints, etc before they even reach six years in service. Wearing more than 50lbs of weight alone puts you at risk for injury. It's one of the reasons why the US military is becoming increasingly reliant on mounted patrols and mechanized infantry. The less weight a soldier needs to carry into battle, the more mobile they are and the less tired they will be when they get there. Meaning you easily increase their lethality on the battlefield. There are going to be some tactical considerations that need to be made, such as when and where to leave the mules behind, but that far outweighs the cons of having them.

Definitely a future tool for breaking a stalemate situation. As a former medic in an Airborne Infantry and Special Forces being able to move wounded to a safe zone for extractions without having to pull security from the immediate battle could prove priceless. I can say that in the mid 80’s we were tasked to bring early laptops to the field. At the time we thought this was a joke and could not fathom the concept of one more cumbersome piece of tech into battle. I think those guys in your video are Airsoft Special Forces and the craft had a microwave oven for their pizza MRE’s.

You want to be far enough away from each other just in case you get hit with indirect fire or grenades. If you're close to each other like on top of that UGV you're sacrificing depth, security, and dispersion, and becoming a very big, and easy target.

I think the scenario of the recovery with the UGV was a hot fire scene. They went into the water instead of being on that car to be spread out and be less likely to be taken out by a single grenade/RPG hit or MG salvo and also to have more lines of fire and spread out eyes. Hence the casualty who was hit by enemy fire. Hence the smoke grenade to cover their retreat by obscuring the enemies vision.

I'd love to see a 20mm or even a 25mm stuck onto one of these bad boys. Now that would be some serious fire support since it would be able to carry loads of ammunition. Obviously one of the biggest downsides to unmanned robotic stuff is the cost. Sure, it saves face at the end of the day with the public if you send these guys in instead of soldiers but I can't imagine the maintenance on these things, not to mention the reliability factor. If you're in a situation where you're losing even one of these things in battle you're going to be losing a lot of money. With the United States, that's not too much of an issue due to our absolutely insane military budget, but most other countries are probably going to be a lot more hesitant about employing unmanned drones that probably cost as much as 20 soldiers ($$$$ wise of course, I'm not talking about the value of life which is of course much more important)

But if you let regular guys do the same job, let's say you make a mortar unit of 3 guns, you have about 15 men and 3 vehicles. When you make a robot that can do it, you already take those men out of the question, the maintanence of the machinery wouldn't change very much since it's mostly the same thing (except you can't repair on the field), and you saved 15 men, take their pay and time to train out of the equation and replace it with 3-5 who keep eyes on the robots if something should go wrong and maintain them.

Some comments: 1) Mine clearing is definately a possibility! But then again, why not take a normal car! Have some mine plows on it and automatic steering. If you need to clear for mines - you'll have to go through the area anyhow - so all that expensive off road..... The RDaNavy has the Holm-class as mine drones - normally 4 of the 6 are configured for training and yeoman duties - picking up oilspills etc. But in case one of them is blown to smithereens there are spares. www2.forsvaret.dk/viden-om/materiel/sovaernets_materiel/droner/Pages/Droner2.aspx It is not so much the danger of mine clearing in itself. I suspect, but it is more: If a minefield is to be effective it needs to be guarded - by artillery f.i. - and that is one you want to finde - and take out. 2) As to CASEVAC there is no substitute for a "dust-off" where a qualified doctor with equipment is available. To keep the person alive for the "Golden hour" you'll need covering fire anyhow - perhaps "Sandies". In Vietnam the yanks stopped all the advanced first aid, and applied tourniquettes to everything. Perhaps from the realisation, that if getting a direct hit from 155 mm shell there is not much point anyway but put the forwarding adress to the Imperial Wargraves Commission. The tourniquet-solution might be the explanation why so few survived head trauma.....? 3) Considering supplies toting - well, I prefer providing the trucks with some sort of Level 2 protection - comes in handy in other connections as well. 4) Support in closed areas - well, in Libya it was possible to provide close air support against TANKS for CIVILIANS. The robots were there - called a GPS-bomb released from a safe distance. Saves you an awfull lot of bother by bringing up drones to the front. 5) As your commentary so eloquently points out: A lot of drones are solutions in search of a problem. Mind you Rheinmetal is a german company, and they are wont to overdesign into inpracticality.

Jup, robots can just do a worse job than humans (usually) alot faster, ALOT. If a robot could identify targets like a human at normal speeds... well, it wouldnt miss too much and could probably fire anything under 1000 rounds per minute at full auto (and being able to aim each shot on full auto). But, robots cant identify targets like humans can, as soon as they figure that out robotic combatants will be worth the other issues.

The moral aspect of the weapon was addressed by the first projectiles and siege weapons. The first recorded bio attack that I know of, was conducted by Alexander the Great. Questioning the morality of an autonomous weapon this kind of foolhardy. We have had autonomous machines since the first torpedoes we're equipped with gyroscopes to maintain course to the Target. As for mr. Muffin top! Why did he stop in the middle of the river to do FaceTime? Not to mention his body armor is only covering about 50% of his torso! He looked more like a mess hall sergeant then a field Soldier today. Being a Remf allows you to get a little on the chunky side. Being a line grunt you want to keep that middle a little smaller so you can get down behind objects for protection. And for the record I'm not in much better shape then he is! But I have an excuse I'm 60 years old!

  • @SonsOfLorgar

    @SonsOfLorgar

Wrong. The autonomous weapons we have today such as torpedoes or missiles are not allowed to make target priority or force deployment decisions. A fully automatous armed system cross that moral line.

looking at the history of war, it's hard to make a case for the "moral soldier". Will there be mistakes made by autonomous weapons? yes! Will some mistakes be avoided by having a cold machine that does not fear for it's life make decision instead of a stressed and exhausted jar head who just lost his buddy? Yes! However any single mistake made by an autonomous weapon will blown out of proportion while a platoon gunning down a village in frustration will be swept under the rug. Besides you can configure your weapon depending on it's mission, if material losses are more acceptable than unwanted casualties (peace keeping missions for instance) you can always settle on very restrictive engagement rules and have a more aggressive setting for more critical missions.

The problem with these is that it cost a ton, has equipment such as cameras that get dirty/damaged (not just gunfire or shrapnel, but small things like getting snagged on something or running into stuff), and the soldiers deployed with it might not have the skills they need to fix it when it does get damaged. If you don't know how to fix it yourself, you have to do it's job and then bring it back with you to get fixed. Maybe the guy standing in the open in the water is a boat gunner, but due to budget cuts the boat is not included. When you have no boat, you become the boat.

One reason you wouldn’t want everyone on the vehicle is because one burst from an MG or a well placed RPG could take everyone out. There are other reasons as well. If you are expecting contact you might want to keep that thing behind you as I am sure it makes a lot of noise. If you aren’t expecting contact or it is unlikely but you still dont want everyone in one place you could use it to ferry men across the danger area two at a time. And no, these guys are not active duty SF, either retired or just guys who work for the company. We do have a couple guys who are over weight because of injuries but not at this percentage.

Another question is how secure are radio controls? There were some rumors a couple of years ago - Russians landed US UAV in IRAN by intercepting it with a special EW vehicle. It happened twice, some long time ago and just a couple of years ago. These things are not secure yet, how can you trust weapon to a robot if the enemy can possibly intercept its control and kill your entire team using your own weapon? Some other concerns I have... As history tells us army is never satisfied with its toys. So when the time will come they will say we need a bigger drone that can carry an entire squad. Why marching on foot when you have a drone?... And we want it to be protected... And we want some weapons on it... And we want steering wheel as well... And here you go - M2 Bradley. So drone should remain small recon thing, scaling it up makes so sense. Even in this video people could drive IFV to the river, pick up the man on stretchers and bring him 20m to the vehicle. We just need to figure out how to make all IFV silent, electric engines, and hi-cap batteries. Drones will be scouting ahead, that's it. Sorry for my poor English.
