British Army retires Warrior Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) | ⛔️ CANCELLED WARRIOR VEHICLE FLEET ⛔️

Ғылым және технология

Changing battlefield priorities was one of the reasons behind the British Army’s decision to ditch the Warrior infantry fighting vehicle update program in the recent defense, security and foreign policy review.
The security review, released in March, axed plans to extensively upgrade the virtually obsolete Warrior, as the U.K. Army and the other armed services have embarked on a transformation policy towards the information age and away from traditional platforms.
Since 2011, Lockheed Martin UK has been leading the development effort to update Warrior with a new cannon and digitized turret, better protection and other improvements.
The upgrade program is now seven years late and more than £225 million ($319 million) over budget, with Lockheed pointing the finger at the MoD for much of the delay. Still, until the release of the security review, the program was expected to move forward pending government approval a more than £800 million ($1.1 billion) production deal to update around 275 vehicles.
Nixing the upgrade program has already had its industrial consequences; Lockheed has announced job losses at the Ampthill, southern England, site where it has invested in creating a turret center of excellence.
The company is also supplying General Dynamics UK with turrets for its Ajax armored reconnaissance vehicle fleet now in production for the British Army, and is casting around for opportunities to leverage its turret capabilities in other programs.
The plan is for the Warrior to be taken out of service by the middle of the decade, as the wheeled Boxer 8x8 armored vehicle enters service. While Boxer isn’t a perfect like-for-like replacement, its ability to quickly travel long distances provides greater value than updating the Warrior.
The MoD said recently it was looking at options to increase the lethality of some of its Boxer fleet with missiles or a cannon to better replace the lethality lost by ditching updated Warriors equipped with the CTAI 40 mm gun.
Hope you enjoy!!

The Bradley is a fine platform today, though, all actual APC and troop transporting is done via STRYKER or HMMWV. But then the M113 SOMEHOW resurrected. Theres currently 5,000 M113A2/A3s in US service. The AMPV is a replacment of the M113, with the Bradley turretless. A good thing to do. But, Army has been looking for better ways to make a better IFV/AFV since 1999. It started with the GCV-IFV, then the FFV, then the NGCV, which seems to be the one that will have a atleast 2 prototypes ready by 2022 to fiend by 2028 if there is no setbacks with demand of fielding at latest 2035.

Sadly, Warrior IFV is not the most loved vehicle even among military enthusiasts. There are many books on Bradley, and while the BMP series didn't get that many English books, there is a nice book in Russian (and since someone threw it onto the Net, it's even possible to read it Google Translated), and if you throw all three articles in Tankograd about the series in you have the makings of a nice book. I don't think I've seen a book on Warrior since Osprey made one for it, and they hadn't even turned it into an E-book, and the sites available are pretty superficial.

I was attached to 1BN Scots Guards in Hohne. We got Warrior in 89. For me, as REME personnel, it was a huge leap from the 434 to the 513 variant. The warrior was so much more reliable than 432’s, so on exercise, we had much less to do than normal. The vehicle crew’s really did benefit from the performance & ride quality on the warrior. On Saltau, I used to feel bad, (well, sort of), if you miss timed riding the bottom of a hill in a 434, as the crew in the back would get slammed when it bottomed out. The warrior absorbed all of that for a very smooth ride. During initial range testing, when we first received warrior, the armourers were kept very busy, sorting out & timing on the 7.62 gun, (can’t remember it's name). I have so many fond memories, more of my crew on the vehicle, rather than the warrior itself. However, it was much better for a kip in the hangers, next day, after a good night on the piss, when hiding from our tiffy.

I don't live in Britain, but I'm really sad to see the Warrior go. It's easily been one of my favorite IFVs since I got it in Armored Warfare, and they tried to develop the Warrior CSP so it could continue serving but even that got cancelled. It's too bad they couldn't have let the Warrior CSP continue, it would've been interesting to see how far the Warrior could've gone with those upgrades. I'd love the chance to see one in person at least.

I feel old as I remeber when these entered service. Saw them excel in the Gulf (first one) and in Bosnia/Kosovo. In my job as a tank transporter driver I also got to drive them quite a bit. Very reliable (for a tracked vehicle) and as an upgrade from the AFV 432 were a major step-up in capability. It would be nice to see Warrior soldier on for another couple of decades, but I think that, as in many cases, and upgrade may not be the best decision. With an upgrade you are basically trying to put stuff in a vehicle that it was not orginally designed to contain. All well and good, but the sheer number of upgades they were trying to put in Warrior meant (I suspect) that space in the back will be getting ever tighter, whereas with Boxer it was designed to do this from the word go. You must also rember that wheeled AFV's are far more versatile than tracks in that they rely far less on things like tank transporters and rail to get them to where they are needed and are, in general, far more reliable. 33 Years in services is a highly commendable record and as to where they go next, I suspect Jordan will have them, as they did with the UK Challenger 1 fleet. They may even have them upgraded before entering service there!

It is all knowledge gained that points towards a move away from Warrior. I spent 12 years and two tours with Warrior and have a similar soft spot for it, but modernisation is key to the military and the British Army has been decades behind in tech for a long long time. • @Weakeyedominant

@@eddiel7635 our geography is the main reason. We are on the far side of Europe which means troops need to deploy and have logistical support for thousands of miles to fight either Russia or in the middle east. During the cold war Russia was considered to be the only serious threat which is why it was based in Germany. Now troops are far more likely to be deployed to the middle east for actual combat and for that they need to be deployable which means medium armour, mine protection and a lot of logistics vehicles on top of armour which reduces the number of vehicles we can field. Even against Russia I think Poland, Germany and eastern Europe should be providing the heavy armour and the UK should focus on air dominance which would decimate heavy armour from a distance. Once it's gone medium armour can be used to deploy troops and hold ground.

I think the decision to put MechInfantry on wheels reflects the fact that they are no longer based in Germany. The British army now needs to be able to move itself strategic distances, potentially at very short notice. The Challys will always have to go by rail or TT of course but having IFVs that have the ability to self-deploy will be very handy. It's what they used to have the Saxons for during the cold war. Though unlike Saxon, Boxer can actually be a useful fighting vehicle once it arrives, not just a battle bus. I would like to see us get an AJAX IFV variant in future though.

One would think with all the R&D moolah spent thus far, that new turret should find its' way onto a Boxer IFV module - but it really does need an ATGM launcher! Alternately, the existing old turrets, with refurbishment and FCS upgrades could be used for Boxer modules, while the Warrior chassis go into storage against unforeseen future demand. Ultimately, 8x8s as battle taxis can carry more infantry, represent operating cost savings, and have strategic transport advantages, yet when it comes to being able to fully exploit terrain, and maneuver tactically on the forward edge of battle, tracked IFVs are simply in another class. MoD will probably keep a regiment or two active for the heavy brigades much longer than the predicted phase out.

I think there is a fundamental mistake that the British often make in developing our weapons systems/ equipment. We have certain specific requirements that not all other countries share, for example the emphasis placed on armour and protection above all else, and (until this month) the use of a 120mm rifled gun. These specific requirements gave us specific British equipment. It might be excellent - but there is little chance of export sales, which means unit costs are always high...and consequently we get fewer of them. An example would be mounting ATGMs on personnel carriers. British doctrine doesn't go for this... but other countries don't share this view...and want APCs that that can engage MBTs if they come across them. A bolt on package might have sufficed for this, and making some changes to the basic design would probably not have materially effected its use by the British. The excellent/ perfect became the enemy of the bloody good. Perhaps designing more "generic" kit that could be easily adapted to meet other army's needs, might be a way to reduce unit cost and extend production runs .

Afaic judge, the previously envisaged WCSP for 380 platforms (including re 245 of them the additional WFLIP that involved up-gunning to a stabilised 40mm main armament weapon), would've resulted in the army retaining a significantly more capable AFV until 2040 than will now be provided in the wheeled 'Boxer'. Even including the proposed variant (if any ever materialise) equipped with the CTAS 40mm gun, which in any case is the same as was designated under WFLIP. So in short, looks like yet again our metro-trash establishment simply cannot have too much "Yoowup". Irrespective of how many better alternatives there are. Even ones that themselves include significant European elements when their capability justifies that option on purely objective grounds, but are STILL, it seems, destined to be rejected if even more "Yoowup" can be obtained by opting for something else instead.
