British MKIV Helmet History, Overview, and Liner Removal Instructions

Ғылым және технология

Today we're looking at the British MKIV "Turtle" Helmet. These were introduced late in WWII, and served the British Military through the Cold War until replaced with Kevlar helmets in the 1990's. The MKIV had a unique liner system that made removing the liner easy, and old liners could be replaced with new liners without tools, and in a matter of moments.

You are showing a Mark IV helmet with a "sock" liner introduced in 1956, the black liner is from an earlier issue Mk III or Mk IV manufactured from 1941 onwards and issued from 1944 onwards. The Mk IV with the so called sock liner was unofficially called a MkV however it was not officially designated as anything other than a MkIV . The Mk IV was phased out by 1985 and was not replaced with a Kevlar helmet but by one manufactured from Ballistic Nylon.
