Economic history graduate here. Notwithstanding that woman's unhinged screeching, the British Empire really was a force for good. It's "free trade" model lifted more people out of poverty in the Empire than countries not colonised by Britain. In Africa despite the myths, there was a nett flow into African counties developing the infrastructure, which is why London, broke after WWII, could not make them independent fast enough in the 1960s. In a recent IMF paper discussing Haiti and the reasons for its collapse, research into poverty was cited where BRITISH COLONISATION was the only outlier (not contributing to a country's problems). French colonisation and adopting socialism on the other hand .... Be PROUD of your British heritage, it was a force for good.

Hello. I would like your opinion. My family background on my Father's side is Irish Catholic. He very much has a weird opinion on the British Empire.. he makes regular statements about Britain and Ireland and even states he sympathy for the IRA. Which from a historical view I can understand the IRA, yet he believes the British Empire was right to fight the Nazis, my brother has Learning Difficulties and would not have survived the Holocaust. If it wasn't for Britain, Ireland, Commonwealth and other Allied nations maybe he wouldn't have survived. .. I don't know its a very controversial issue 😂

The whole colonization issue or debate should be segmented into time periods and each time period analysed separately. To just jump to the conclusion that colonization was a benefit to the Colonized people is disrespectful to the victim. When Britain initially invested or ploughed back financial resources into the Colonies, was it for the benefit of the indigenous population or it was an endeavor by the UK to give its agents a good standard of living comparable to the UK while serving UK interests in plundering the new found lands. At some point, the UK presided over the largest human trafficking and exploitation, murders, rapes and all kinds of vile acts across all its colonies and more than any other European nation ever did. During that phase of colonization, can we say that colonization was of great benefit to the Colonies and the victims. A different model or implementation would have been better than this one which was fueled by greed and the desire to domineer over other people. A more collaboratory approach would have yielded better results than the Colonization project.

If she's of Indian descent it would be worth asking if she'd prefer to live her life as an untouchable with no hope of improving her prospects, or perhaps be the guest of honor at a sati. Or perhaps been in India during the Muslim invasion and the wholesale slaughter of tens of millions of Hindus which went with it. It's noteworthy that India celebrated its independence from the defunct British Empire by seeing its political and religious factions fall to cutting one another's throats with right good will. A horrified Gandhi went on a hunger strike until the violence subsided.

The British was very unjust against the South African people. They bribed our black population and started the race hate so they could gain access to our gold and diamonds. Even with the atrocities in the concentration camps we accept their legacy. Never forgot it. But got on with our lives. Using what they have left on. Never destroying their flags and statues. This woman is a nut. The average Aboriginal lifespan in Australia is 71.9 years for males and 75.6 years for females. That's 8 years less than the average - NOT 8 years less than white people. Australians with lower education don't live as long as Australians with high education, regardless of race and lots of other discrepancies, so it's not as if every other Australian lives to the average lifespan. The leading cause of death for Aboriginals is lung cancer because about 60% smoke, compared to the national average of 15%. She's correct about an aboriginal male being more likely to go to jail than university, but you can paraphrase that to they're more likely to commit a jailable offence than go to University. Less than 50% finish high school despite all kinds of programs to try to keep them in school. The Government has tried all kinds of things to keep them at school and into University. In the end, it is the indivual's responsibility to make the best choice for themselves. Set them back hundreds of years??? How do you do that? They were stoneage.

@@clarkdavison40 She harms her case by saying "100s of millions", but whatever benefits colonisation brought to the colonies (as well as to the colonisers - we didn't do it out of the kindness of our hearts, after all!) a few million people DID actually die in the process, and the legacy had significant downsides too. And who's to say that India, for example, wouldn't have peacefully asked for railways anyway? Hard to know for sure. We need to look at both sides, and there are plenty of reputable, calm historians who can explain the negative side. Kaur is not the right man for the job 🙂

His role was to represent his views that the British have plenty to be proud of when it comes to it's colonial past. I would much prefer to hear a reasoned argument against that from somebody who was just as knowledgeable about historical events but did not agree with Kaur. Instead we get a highly emotional, shrieking, angry woman who seems to hate Britain and the British. To hear an "expert" challenged by someone of equal or superior intellect is a great thing. Even better when both have to challenge their ideas and preconceptions. This was not that.

My great grandmother was in a concentration camp in South Africa and told us about the atrocities the British soldiers committed in the camp. Some of the prisoners starved to death. Crops and farmhouses burnt and woman raped. And to do what? Get their blood hands on the gold in South Africa.

When your only strength is shouting, your argument is bad.

Let me finish, and then says "Hundreds of millions of people died'" for the ten millionth time. She was done after the first time she said this. And the people that Britain conquered, had conquered the inhabitants of that land who were there before them. Nobody was where they were back then unless they had conquered someone else. No one. People weren't where they were because they popped up like flowers from the ground. Keeley's great book "War Before Civilization" clearly backs this up. All over the world. It's exactly as one would assume it would have been. The "peaceful savage" is a compete & blatantly obvious fallacy. There was always a local tribe or group or sect who didn't have the foot of the conquered on their throats. Always. Judge if you like, but it was a time when "it was yours if you keep it" was the law of the land. It was musical chairs back then. Western Civilization stopped the music. At least for a time.
