British Historian DESTROYS Emotional Race Activist with FACTS

In a heated "debate" on GB News, historian & broadcaster Rafe Heydel-Mankoo clashed with television personality Narinder Kaur on whether there were benefits to British colonization. Whilst many terrible wrongs were of course committed, Rafe's position is that, taken in the balance, the British Empire's legacy is far more positive than negative -- not least for women.
The debate was sparked after recent comments by former Australian Prime Minister John Howard, who said that Australia was "lucky" to have been colonized by Britain.

I totally agree. I imagine that the show's producers aim for a balance of opinions but this spoilt, pampered woman (who identifies as Indian but remains in Britain) seems incapable of reasoned argument. There is no need for "Jerry Springer" hysteria on a news programme.

I suppose when the facts are on the other side it's hard to find someone balamced to refute them. It takes a special kind of person to dismiss any evidence and lie and exaggerate on TV. As is usually the case her outrage comes out of a sense of wounded pride, her moral outrsge won't extend to non-white people acting badly in history.

@@divyamalhotra9679what a strange opinion , no future? What do you think is going to happen? If , as you imply the place is going to the dogs I presume that you and people of like mind are already making plans to up sticks and toddle off to your chosen utopia. Britain has survived quite well for centuries and whatever spews out of your brain cell will survive and prosper. The constant sniveling about England and it's history is as tiresome as it is off beam, we are constantly told to apologize for our past , but, were are the demands for the same from all other states who behaved in like manner ? One clown on this site implied that England alone started slavery , such idiocy , people like that should not be walking amongst us , slavery is thousands of years old and still exists to this day, even the sainted Irish indulged in its practice , why this brain dead women is given air time is beyond comprehension, it is a wonder that she is not on the stage as a comedian she would get a barrel of laughs.

I am a 73 year old Zimbabwean (formerly a Rhodesian), and so I have experienced colonialism first hand. The British pioneers marched into Zimbabwe in 1890. It was a disease-ridden, war torn, trackless waste with wholesale murder of the Mashona tribes by the Matabele. In 90 years those of British descent turned it into a virtually first world country. We had good roads, railways, schools, communications, power grids (hydro-power from Kariba Dam - the biggest dam in the world, when it was completed), government buildings, hospitals, clinics, honest judicial system, and a police force in the top three in the world. Interestingly there were almost no emigrants. We then faced mandatory sanctions initiated by England a the US, and a civil war initiated and financed by Russia and China. This led to a Marxist government under Gabriel Mugabe, which turned the country from the Breadbasket of Africa to a Basket case in 40 years. Now, under the Marxist Freedom Fighter government, probably a third of the population has fled the country. Form your own conclusions.

Economic history graduate here. Notwithstanding that woman's unhinged screeching, the British Empire really was a force for good. It's "free trade" model lifted more people out of poverty in the Empire than countries not colonised by Britain. In Africa despite the myths, there was a nett flow into African counties developing the infrastructure, which is why London, broke after WWII, could not make them independent fast enough in the 1960s. In a recent IMF paper discussing Haiti and the reasons for its collapse, research into poverty was cited where BRITISH COLONISATION was the only outlier (not contributing to a country's problems). French colonisation and adopting socialism on the other hand .... Be PROUD of your British heritage, it was a force for good.

Hello. I would like your opinion. My family background on my Father's side is Irish Catholic. He very much has a weird opinion on the British Empire.. he makes regular statements about Britain and Ireland and even states he sympathy for the IRA. Which from a historical view I can understand the IRA, yet he believes the British Empire was right to fight the Nazis, my brother has Learning Difficulties and would not have survived the Holocaust. If it wasn't for Britain, Ireland, Commonwealth and other Allied nations maybe he wouldn't have survived. .. I don't know its a very controversial issue 😂

The whole colonization issue or debate should be segmented into time periods and each time period analysed separately. To just jump to the conclusion that colonization was a benefit to the Colonized people is disrespectful to the victim. When Britain initially invested or ploughed back financial resources into the Colonies, was it for the benefit of the indigenous population or it was an endeavor by the UK to give its agents a good standard of living comparable to the UK while serving UK interests in plundering the new found lands. At some point, the UK presided over the largest human trafficking and exploitation, murders, rapes and all kinds of vile acts across all its colonies and more than any other European nation ever did. During that phase of colonization, can we say that colonization was of great benefit to the Colonies and the victims. A different model or implementation would have been better than this one which was fueled by greed and the desire to domineer over other people. A more collaboratory approach would have yielded better results than the Colonization project.

This woman is a nut. The average Aboriginal lifespan in Australia is 71.9 years for males and 75.6 years for females. That's 8 years less than the average - NOT 8 years less than white people. Australians with lower education don't live as long as Australians with high education, regardless of race and lots of other discrepancies, so it's not as if every other Australian lives to the average lifespan. The leading cause of death for Aboriginals is lung cancer because about 60% smoke, compared to the national average of 15%. She's correct about an aboriginal male being more likely to go to jail than university, but you can paraphrase that to they're more likely to commit a jailable offence than go to University. Less than 50% finish high school despite all kinds of programs to try to keep them in school. The Government has tried all kinds of things to keep them at school and into University. In the end, it is the indivual's responsibility to make the best choice for themselves. Set them back hundreds of years??? How do you do that? They were stoneage.

And who's to say that India, for example, wouldn't have peacefully asked for railways anyway? Hard to know for sure. His role was to represent his views that the British have plenty to be proud of when it comes to it's colonial past. I would much prefer to hear a reasoned argument against that from somebody who was just as knowledgeable about historical events but did not agree with Kaur. Instead we get a highly emotional, shrieking, angry woman who seems to hate Britain and the British. To hear an "expert" challenged by someone of equal or superior intellect is a great thing.

Let me finish, and then says "Hundreds of millions of people died'" for the ten millionth time. She was done after the first time she said this. And the people that Britain conquered, had conquered the inhabitants of that land who were there before them. Nobody was where they were back then unless they had conquered someone else. No one. People weren't where they were because they popped up like flowers from the ground. Keeley's great book "War Before Civilization" clearly backs this up. All over the world. It's exactly as one would assume it would have been. The "peaceful savage" is a compete & blatantly obvious fallacy. There was always a local tribe or group or sect who didn't have the foot of the conquered on their throats. Always. Judge if you like, but it was a time when "it was yours if you keep it" was the law of the land. It was musical chairs back then. Western Civilization stopped the music. At least for a time. It is getting interesting, however.
