My 26-year-old (at the time) son collapsed February 12, 2021, in my kitchen when he was getting ready for work. He'd not been feeling well for months and had finally scheduled a doctor's appointment for the end of the month. He couldn't make the appointment because he was already in the hospital. He agreed to go to the emergency room after the collapse (I can not describe the fear that still ices my veins when I think about if he'd just decided to go back to bed instead. His blood levels were so low that they said he'd have died that night). Because of covid restrictions, he had to go in alone. I got a call from the hospital a while later saying that they were making an exception (and if that didn't terrify me...) and he wanted me there. I got there, and my 6'3 sasquatch with his long hair and scary beard just looked at me, and his face crumpled up. He managed one word that knocked the air from the room, and I couldn't breathe. Leukemia. A word that is so scary all by itself... and then you attach it to your lifeline in this world. The person you love beyond all others. He spent two full months in the oncology ward (the first week by himself because of covid restrictions) getting chemo and transfusions and bone marrow biopsies and surgeries to install a port in his chest and surgeries to remove infected lymph nodes from his armpits. They finally bent the rules (again, because he was almost catatonic with fear and giving up) and let me come once a week. Then, in the second or third week, they went to code yellow, and I was allowed to be there every day. When his hair and beard started to fall out, the look in his face was almost another level of desolation. just one more thing this disease was taking. I sat by his bedside, held his hand, and cried with him every time. When he got packages and cards from complete strangers and cried for a different reason, I cried with him. We talked about how the hair would grow back and that this was all expected, but it still was an outward reminder of this awful thing inside. After he was released to come home, he still had to go to the hospital for five days out of every month for chemo. And then at least once a month for transfusions. He also had a nurse that came in and helped him with clearing his port. Then, there was the terrifying icu visit. He woke up shivering and had a fever of 104. Had to go to the er where he was mistakenly given a shot of blood thinner (usual for leukemia patients, not without checking platelets. He was in chemo crash which meant he had extremely low platelets and was already at risk of bleeding). He was taken to the oncology floor and then icu when his blood pressure started dropping, his heart rate rising to scary levels and his temp reached highs of 106-107. Anyway, he also developed a small brain bleed from the blood thinner and platelet drop (his oncologist was pissed), and his kidneys and liver function started shutting down. They had to remove his port and a nurse coming in to check the site (not a regular nurse) didn't check his charts and (according to him) ripped off the bandage, which jerked out the packing and dislodged the clot that was barely forming. Then slapped another dressing on and left. The next nurse came in right after to set him up for transfusion and blood was "rolling down his arm" from the bandage on his chest. I got there at visiting hours and saw the giant puddle of blood by his bed. He still sees his oncologist for blood tests every two months, but he's in remission and doing well! But I wanted to describe some of the hell that he went through to just emphasize that the hair loss is a kick in the gut that just gives you a physical reminder of the hell that cancer creates in your body. The smell of a hospital still sends my poor boy (just turned 29) into an anxiety attack. He's my whole world, and I don't know what I'd do without him. So I emphatically say, "F UCK cancer!"

@GOTGames thank you so much. I'm still terrified all the time that a relapse might just come up out of the blue. It's less and less likely the longer he's in remission, but I'm his mom, so I guess it's my call to worry. We are a very tight-knit family, and for a long time, he was all I had. My parents and I are close, but they didn't live nearby. Now we all live near each other and it's much easier. He's still my lifeline, and I wouldn't survive if he weren't in this world. You are a wonderful reactor, and I love watching the sad songs with you and crying along, lol. The occasional, "Fuck you, Judd!" always makes me laugh. Thank you, and never stop being you! 💜🌻🕊💜

Unless you've been there, you don't realize what hair loss can symbolize. I knew mine would be gone during treatment, so I had it shaved before I could lose it in the shower or on my pillow. I said, "It doesn't matter. It's just hair." But it's not always. For me, it was the outward symbol of what was happening to me inside and how I didn't recognize myself. It doesn't bother some people, but sometimes you just don't realize how it will impact you until it happens... This song came out right in the thick of my battle with cancer in 2005, so it impacts me in a particular way. It's a special song. ❤

@lgarner3663 You are correct. The cancer was gone after a year and a half of treatments, but over the next 18 years I continued to need surgery on my breast, for various related reasons, just chopping it off bit-by-bit, until finally last year they just gave up and took it all. I had a reconstruction with my own tissue, and I'm cleared for my mastectomy tattoo. I had my consultation this past week and have my appointments all set up. It's going to be a skull on the breast, wearing a Steampunk hat. Flowers, feathers and bows will surround it. The soft, pretty, things will likely show in most clothes - exactly like me. I hid the difficult stuff and only those closest to me saw the ugly, hard stuff. Everyone else got the chirpy, "Oh, I'm fine, thanks for asking!" Anyway. My way of finally putting this fight with my body and cancer to rest. I had a reduction on the other side to match (ish) and I'm just happy to fit into a single size bra with no prosthetics. I'm so sorry you have lost multiple pieces. I can imagine it is literally, and emotionally, losing a piece of your actual self. My cousin started with throat cancer, it moved to both breasts and now it's in her lungs. She keeps fighting. We all do, because that's what we have to do. Too many people love us. Sending prayers - or positive energy, if you prefer - for you in hopes for peace and healing within your body and soul. All the love, my sister. ❤️

The 5-year-old girl who inspired the song was named Colette, but in the song her name is Sarabeth. The song's writers, Joe Henry and Doug Johnson, first tried Marybeth, but then Henry had a chance encounter at a checkout line with an old friend named Sarabeth, and decided that should be her name. Unfortunately, Collette doesn't have a happy ending and passes away. They wanted a song to remember her

Now he has dementia and is in a care facility. I'm up to my eyeballs in taking care of everything we used to share doing as well as all the decisions and finances for his care. Thank you. I needed the reminder today that I have to be strong for him because he can't. BTW I also love your reaction. You've helped me in a hard moment, my friend. Thank you ❤

This song is based on a true story. In real life, the girl was much younger and she succumbed to her disease. It’s a heartbreaking story and most of the time, these songs are rooted in real life. Another song based on real life (and shown much truer than most is Believe by Brooks and Dunne). That’s another tear-jerker of the beautiful kind…

In the states we have a lovely children’s hospital (in Tennessee) that does cancer research and shares it world wide for FREE, treats children for FREE this was one of the “anthem” songs for that hospital the year it came out out 2005. It is such a lovely sentiment and song for the ones who grow up and go to prom, but also the ones who gain their wings.

I'm 66years old and this video takes me back to when I was at school and there was a girl in my class who was fighting cancer and had lost her hair and when we went to the prom every boy asked her for a dance and when the music stopped they kissed her on the cheek and told her she was so good looking and that we wouldn't let everyone has bad words towards her and at the end of the prom we all walked her home there was about 100 boys walking home and we all kissed her goodnight,I saw her not long ago she still looks great and she has 3kids 2sons and a girl.

I go into surgery one week from today but this morning they called and say they think it's gotten into the bone. They'll need MORE tests. My brothers say they're there for me but they WON'T shave their heads. 😂 ❤ It's scary to look your own mortality in the face but it's the card a lot of us draw. I pray for the young ones, the ones that don't get to have the wonderful things life can be. As for me, some people have the right shape of head to do bald, I'm not one of them. But I have a cousin who crocheted me the cutest little caps and I look great in a hat.

I'm a little late to the party, but I love rascal flatts. There's a song by them that was sung to me and my best friend by her parents and something I ended up also singing to my own child. As a parent, I'm sure you'd appreciate it a lot. Their song "My Wish" is absolutely beautiful and oh so heartwarming. They also have a fun one that my own child loves which was in the disney movie "Cars" called "Life is a Highway." I admit I can't help but dance to it with my kid. Haha.

Country music tells us a story...as soon as I began to type that comment you said it. I don't know how you feel about gospel music but if you want a great storyteller with an outstanding voice check out David Phelps. Southern Gospel is the equivalent to county in the gospel genre. The song was not written by Rascal Flatts, but it was about a real family member of the writer. It was recorded after she passed. The young lady in the video was an actual cancer patient at time of it's recording. At an award show they had asked for prayers for her as she was not doing well at the time. I do not know the outcome though.

I remember after this song came out and they were touring, I read an article that they would get into a type of arial seat and go around the stadiums and sing this song. They were looking for women going through cancer treatments and would serenade them with the song. Not a dry eye in the house.

Ok, this just broke me. I've seen this video, years ago. But that was before I had cancer. Thankfully, I didn't need chemo or lose my hair, but I don't feel comfortable ever wearing a two piece bathing suit anymore because of the 6 violently purple scars the surgery left me with on my abdomen. So yep, sort of similar. Yeah, this was hard to get through.

He wanted to use the song as a way to show her courage and envision what would have happened if she was diagnosed as a teenager and survived the ordeal.
