It really blew me away when I heard him playing sitar lines and East Indian music with a slide. He was explaining that the ascending lines are in a major scale and descending lines are in a minor scale. When he plays the music comes alive. That was just drop dead.

That’s the difference. His musical awareness. His technique is the best in the world. But he’s also always musically tuned in. His expression, his phrasing, dynamics, the guy has it all. And he emotes almost nothing through his face or body language. He channels it all through his hands. He’s the greatest electric guitar player alive. And I don’t even think it’s close.

Yeah, I don't like throwing the word "greatest" around, but when it comes to slide it's hard to not hand Derek that title. The only players I've heard that deservingly fall into his slide-playing category are Jr Brown and vintage Johnny Winter. Jr can be outright mind-blowing and there used to be a version on KZread of Johnny playing "Highway 61" that is EXPLOSIVE, but I can't track it down anymore (probably a copyright infringement or something of that nature). Also, Robert Randolph used to be rather nasty on the steel pedal, but for some reason he simply stopped shredding. That guy blew the roof off the Irving Plaza in NYC about 12 yrs ago, not sure why he stopped: its not as if he became wealthy from playing the current crap he's producing.

Derek started his career playing with his Uncle Butch Trucks band, The Allman Brothers Band. Even in those early years, Derek’s playing came from such a soulful place that Gregg Allman thought he was channeling his late, great brother, Duane Allman, arguably the greatest slide player ever. Gregg would close his eyes and imagine Duane on stage with him again. Someone below mentioned SRV-Derek, for me, is the first player since SRV to feel what he was playing so deeply that listeners can’t help but take that spiritual journey with him. There are many players who are technically proficient and can play with lightning flash speed, and are fun to listen to, but the music doesn’t stay with you. Hendrix changed people, Duane Allman changed people, SRV changed people, and Derek Trucks, IMHO, might be the only player of his generation that approaches those gods of the guitar in pure, simple feel.

He doesn't play like Duane did. He doesn't have the same interests in music that Duane did. So no, having Derek isn't anything close to what it would be like if Duane was here.

Fil, I've been playing guitar for almost 60 years and slide guitar since 1970 and I feel exactly the same way, my friend. Derek is out of this world. The only person I'd put in that league is Sonny Landreth, who breaks every rule and makes it all work. Sonny and Derek are quite a bit different but both masters. I took a lot from the great David Lindley and he's right there for melodic slide guitar, though he plays lap steel. Duane Allman was the guy who brought modern slide technique to the table and a prime influence for any slide fan. Derek really has taken Duane's style and kept expanding it. That was an incredible 2 1/2 minutes of slide artistry.

So I was going to see a band I liked with this great guitarist named Warren Haynes I recently had gotten into. Then suddenly there's this guy with long hair just about down to his waist, playing the absolute hell out of the guitar. My jaw hit the floor and I knew. This was the greatest guitarist I had ever seen live. Made me think of Jimi, Stevie, Janis, Cocker... Someone truly in the moment with the music. The music comes through them and passes to the audience and feeds back into the music, making it more than just a concert, it becomes an experience for everyone there. I've seen lots of great musicians ,but Derek is the only one who ever made me think if those legendary artists.

He also cares soooo much about his performance and product he delivers to his audience. For example, one show I saw he broke a string on his #1 SG during the 2nd to last encore...Tech swapped out for #2 SG...I just figured he would complete the last song with #2...but no...#1 came back perhaps a quarter of the way through the last song...

Came back for another viewing of this analysis. Derek does watch others onstage with him. In the 2007 performance of Anyway the Wind Blows with Clapton, JJ Cale, Bramhall II Derek is watching JJ intently. I know that whatever he picked up then he carried to future performances.

Let me tell you how good is Derek Trucks. Imagine the list of the best world guitarist. No.1 is Derek and then you left 20 places below empty, than you can put some other guitarist there. I watch Eric Clapton watch him playing, with the corner of his eye, and that's said everything. Derek is the guitar player on spiritual level, probably reincarnation of the Duane Allman. It's proven in many cases that all departed people coming back in life in the same area among same people. I had seen so many excellent guitar players in many music styles and situation,.. but this guy is something - not from this world. Just watch how calm he is while he is playing, you can hear perfectly every single note, tune, no matter how fast he's playing. To playing with the Allman brother band you must be someone and something.

Utterly Blues approved. ... ferocious, fire-breathing slide ... What more could you ask?" raved Obrecht, who then tipped off Alligator Records president Bruce Iglauer. Iglauer, encouraged by his staff's excitement on hearing the album, released it to a world-wide audience.

I saw Derek about 10 years ago in Chapel Hill NC with Eric Clapton and Robert Cray. It was a Clapton Concert, Robert Cray was a guest and Derek was basically playing a lot of rhythm in the back ground, but I couldn't keep my eyes off Derek. It was my first exposure to him and he was memorizing! Especially when Eric gave him the spotlight for a solo. WOW!!! Thanks again Phil. You Rock!!
