Sonny has a very unusual slide technique, wearing the slide on his little finger, and fretting notes with his other fingers behind the slide, pushing them far enough away from the slide to ring cleanly with the slide still in place and acting on other strings. Derek plays slide more conventionally, but is absolutely excellent. Two of the very best!
Sonn Landreth has been my favorite guitarist over ALL the big names!!
Two amazing slide guitarists, in Derek and Sonny, make for an amazing performance. I think it's Dave Ransom on bass, who's tearing it up with them. Fantastic performance. Absolutly a great match made in heaven.Great reaction Harri. 😊 Thanks Harri and Frank. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
DAVID RANSON IS THE BASS PLAYER, HE AND SONNY HAVE BEEN TOGETHER LIKE 50 YRS! IM SONNYS LOCAL GUITAR TECH. THESE ARE GREAT GUYS AND LOCAL TREASURES
Derek is no where close to Sonny period Derek is good but he’s has one style Sonny can do anything he’s in his own class no one will come close.
Sonny Landreth is is a Louisiana guitar legend. If you’re into Blues you have listened to Sonny Landreth play Congo Square it’s his signature song.
"Watching Sonny play is like getting an Algebra lesson"- Vince Gill
Sonny is a great slide guitarist. I've seen him play with one of America's greatest song writers John Hiatt.
Sonny lives in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. He had the good fortune of playing in Clifton Chenier's band at a young age. A studio version of this song appears on his "South of I-10" album, which is one of my favorite albums from the 90s. Mark Knopfler plays on that song on the album.
If you lose them closely the song is really all about the drums because they don't play guitar in Congo Square
There's a lot of Cajun musicians in Louisiana who never leave the state and are some of the best musicians in the country.
The only Congo Square I know of is in Louis Armstrong Park in New Orleans ⚜️
There are levels in music like everything else.
So glad you are discovering Sonny Landreth!
This was amazing! First time hearing this jam.. Derek is always great, and Landreth's style is pretty damn cool.. he was smokin'. And they compliment each other very well.. an awesome show!
Having grown up on the sixties...this...is the only NEW rock band i went out and bought.
Sonny Landreth.....one of the best ever!! This opens the door for the Mighty Mighty Neville Brothers......some the best shows I have seen were the Nevilles the best being at small venues, fortunately many many times. My heart broke when first Charles then Papa Funk passed away. I was lucky to meet them, I was in heaven. Check them out. This was amazing find..one I had missed. Thanks!! Love your channel.
Two generations of slide guitar artistry, amazing.
Great performance! I have yet to see Derek (I will), but i saw Sonny at my hometown bluesfest in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. He was absolutely fantastic. A true legend.
Sonny, the best in the slide biz with Derek right behind.
