I don't need to prove to the world or myself I'm a good person because I know in a possibility I am not, just like anyone else. Such a thing does not exist as a human being, of which I am one. The line between good and evil passes through every human heart, to quote Solzhenitsyn. This is a fundamental point, to be served by your cause, validated and righteous no matter the cost in some circumstances. And I know God is real, but only to me in the explosion inside the confines of my own realisation. To ask somebody else to have this very personal comprehension of mine and expect them to "believe" in it is exactly why God does not exist, and for the same reason you would ask me to prove it.

Anyone who lived in the Ottoman empire who wasn't Muslim was made to pay a tax or face being wiped out. Jizyah (as the tax on non-Muslims is called) was charged to all non-Muslims who where treated as second class citizens and were essentially slaves by way of the tax. When the last Ottoman sultan tried to reform the system and make it more equal the system began to fall apart. Britain was one of many countries that filled in the power vacuum as the empire fell. At one point the British conquered Palestine for the sole purpose of handing it back to the Ottomans. As the Ottoman empire continued to decline the British found themselves in control of Palestine once again. The British eventually realised that that their presence in the region was making a bad problem worse and so they handed control over to the UN. The region has been invaded by something like over 14 empires throughout history. The problems in the region have been caused by the involvement of many empires not just one.

Interesting fact, when the USA joined ww1, they didn't join the war against the ottomans. One reason is because they had historical good relations together. But this backfired when the peace treaty of sevres was made as Britain and France were able to go crazy whilst USA couldn't intervene as they weren't in the war.
