North America is a massive continent so naturally soccer rivalries reflect the region. I thought the comment on Cascadia was spot on. My hometown of Portland is remote and somewhat isolated (like Seattle and Vancouver) so while we can buy whatever we may want on Amazon or a national retail chain, a lot of people are fiercely independent and self-reliant. So, folks here value and support local merchants, craftspeople, farmers and family restaurants. The Cascadia Cup's genesis came from this culture and that's why, in my opinion, it is unique and special.

The D.C. United has the league's oldest rivalry with Red Bull NY, since they were called the NY/NJ Metrostars, then just Metrostars. The day it was announced that they were renamed Red Bull NY, was the last day my brother ever consumed a Red Bull, and he used to drink them all the time!!!

Don't forget, Kabir, Portland and Seattle have had a rivalry well before the MLS existed. Don't let this MLS-made video tell you different. 😉 Also, don't think that New York is even close. This video is old now. Both New York clubs are rather middling to bottom-feeding clubs in their conference, meanwhile Seattle just broke the Undefeated Streak record this season. Cascadia is the Crown Jewels, and Seattle wears them. 💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚

What people don't realize, even here in America, is the deep history of football in America. The U.S. Open Cup, our version of the FA Cup, has been played for since 1913. There are amateur clubs & ethnically-based teams in New England, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, St. Louis & San Francisco that have histories dating back to the early 20th century & the late 19th century. St. Louis University inn St. Louis, Missouri won the NCAA soccer championship 10 times between 1959 & 1973, while losing the championship match 3 times. The U.S. team that beat England 1-0 in the 1950 World Cup was mad up almost entirely of players from St. Louis.

The NY Derby at times can feel manufactured if I’m gonna be honest. A lot of Red Bulls fans still consider DC United to be rival #1, which dates back to 1996, the league’s 1st year. MLS actually did a short doc on it, good watch

It's pretty cool to see the beginnings of a club. I remember being hyped over NYCFC (even though I live in Oregon, the opposite side of the country and Timber's homeland). I was always a very very casual soccer fan growing up, but back in 2010 when Spain won the world cup, I was hooked to how they played and I thought David Villa was the best. I remember seeing his announcement in joining the MLS as NYCFC's first player, I was hyped beyond all things. One of the greatest Spanish strikers ever, he was still fantastic when he came over here and I'm glad the MLS could be part of his legendary career. Yeah, Timber Joey is awesome. 😆🤘 Great video man!

As an American soccer supporter I love MLS! It's not the best quality league in the world but that's part of what makes it fun, it's chaotic and you never know what will happen, it's not like European leagues where you know one of three or four teams will win the league every year. I love the organic culture, depending on what cultures and communities have influenced a certain city it creates a supporters culture that is uniquely their own, whether it's the German influence in Cincinnati or the Polish influence in Chicago. It's a blend of so many things that becomes unique to a city, like Atlanta bringing the unique energy of the city into the stadium and supporter culture. It's hard to stay positive as a Fire supporter but I truly love this league. I'm also an Arsenal supporter, all my teams disappoint me lol. Thanks for this video, love to see people from Europe learn more about MLS and learn to respect the league and its supporters.

I love this video and I love how I put this on as I was working on the tifo for the New York Derby haha. Also New York City and the area around it has a rich soccer history people don’t know it. You have old teams from the 1900’s with teams like the Brooklyn-Italians etc. And I agree the Casscadia Ravelry is one of if not the best in the league cause of the 3 teams existing before MLS but like you heard in the vid I think once both NY RedBulls and NYCFC have started both to win trophies then you’ll see especially in Europe an attraction hopefully to see a NY Derby. Also the next video you need to see is I think MLS’s oldest rivalry game that’s NY RedBulls/MetroStars vs DC United aka The Atlantic Cup Games (Casscadia copied I think our idea of a cup from the fans in a rival game cause we’ve had the Atlantic Cup since 2002 and the Casscadia Teams all didn’t get into the league till after that.

TFC hosted NYCFC last weekend. New York scored the first two goals in the 12th and 21st and their players had no qualms about rubbing it in our races in front of the South End (that’s where all the Supporter Groups stand at BMO Field). Despite being on the receiving end of their taunts, I have a certain appreciation for that level of disrespect, if that makes sense. We ended up scoring twice in the second half and earning the draw, after a few full-on fights. We would have shook that stadium to the ground if we won. It was a scrappy game with lots of taunts and bad behaviour. Just the way I like it.

An important thing for Europeans to remember is that there are a lot of rivalries that were primed before the MLS ever existed and new expansion teams can still tap into some of this. Inter-Miami FC will probably develop a rivalry with the New England Revolution just because those cities have already been playing each other in sports every year since 2005. Inter-Miami started MLS play in 2020, so if they have or become relevant to sports fans in Miami, Florida, both rivalries will heat up (Miami/Boston College and Inter-Miami/New England). If they ever put an MLS team in Michigan, that will be an instant, bitter rivalry with the Columbus Crew and a not-so-bitter rivalry with FC Cincinnati. Some of these rivalries have long histories that go back long before the MLS or the specific teams.

American sports rivalries, tend to be historic and longstanding rivalries between cities. It doesn't matter what sport it is the two cities tend to always be rivals. For example. Los Angeles and San Francisco. Doesn't matter the sport. The LA Lakers are rivals of the Golden State Warriors, The LA Dodgers are rivals of San Francisco, Giants. The LA Galaxy are rivals with the San Jose Earthquakes (the only MLS teamin the San Francisco Bay area.); Boston and New York; Dallas vs Washington DC, Chicago vs Greenbay, Wisconson. Also Chicago vs St. Louis. Then there are the common inter city rivalries in a region where there are two sports teams. So The LA Clippers rival the LA Lakers. And the LA Galaxy were rivals with Chivas USA which became LA FC. And i could go through other sports like Ice Hockey and Baseball the same things happen. And then in every sport there are rivalries that just spring up because the same two teams keep playing each other in a playoff: for example Lakers vs Celtics, Chicago Bulls vs New York. Chicago Bulls vs Detroit.

I react harshly to Europeans who look down their nose at MLS. My first thought is, "F*ck you - I wasn't asking for your opinion". My more measured reflection is simply to acknowledge the ignorance which gave rise to the thought. MLS is *our* league. Its structure, schedule, and format all conform to North American culture and taste. We don't *need* Europe, Latin America, or Asia to approve of the way we do things. As for so called plastic fandom... I would invite any European to investigate the fan culture of American football clubs - not just in MLS. Second and third division clubs have devoted, loyal followings. Every American city of any size at all is home to multiple "football pubs". As for quality... if it were so bad, clubs from the largest leagues in the world wouldn't be raiding MLS academies and rosters during every transfer window. I think the world dreads America becoming a footballing power. For generations, world football has been one of the few international touchstones largely absent of American influence. In that sense, I get it. We Yanks can come off as a bit abrasive and obnoxious. But, like it or not, we are part of the equation. And, sure as God's wrath, we will be heard.

@@kabirconsiders Yes, I believe you're correct. The long held belief had always been that there are the "European Big Five", and everyone else. In truth, I believe La Liga and the Prem have distanced themselves from the pack. Ronaldo at Juventus and Messi now at PSG reinforce that notion, rather than contradict it. Both are obviously still world class players, but are clearly in the twilight of their careers. Serie A and Ligue Un both have the patina of world prestige, but they are clearly a step removed. I know that Messi has his eye on finishing his playing career in MLS, then moving to a board or management role at either Boca Juniors or River Plate. I believe that from a pure marketing standpoint, he should have passed up PSG and gone straight to MLS. PSG are obviously a better club than anything we have to offer. However, with MLS being on the rise, and the US being a wealthier, larger country on the whole, his impact here would have been enormous. It would have outstripped anything Beckham and Ibrahimovic accomplished, combined. An opportunity lost, in my humble opinion.

I'd add. you don't see it much here but for a long time The San Jose Earthquakes vs The LA Galaxy was the biggest rivalry in MLS. Largely because they are in the same state, historical rival cities and met a bunch in the playoffs in epic games. But also Partly because Landon Donovan was a star at both clubs and went to LA and was branded a traitor by San Jose fans. I see a lot of Portland, New York FC, Cascadia talk and thats fine and they are good rivalries. But those teams did not even exist when LA Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes (two original MLS teams) started their rivalries. Many of those are invented and not exactly organic. They are real. But with LA vs San Jose nobody needed a marketing plan and poster. "The California Classico!" So to quote who the fuck knows, "put some respect on that!" lol

both the red bulls and nycfc are largely irrelevant in the ny market. they’re both corporate feeder clubs for their sister clubs in europe. the red bulls fail to draw fans, nycfc plays in yankee stadium, idk. mls needs to have two massive clubs in ny like what they have in la, we don’t have that with the red bulls and city

LOL lafc and galaxy isn't even a rivalry. There's only ONE rivalry in MLS where people have/and continue to physically fight before, during and after a match. Galaxy vs Earthquakes. These other "rivalries" are the equivalent to grade school kids throwing glitter at one another.
