Yes but the beginning of the rivalry was about Seattle and Portland and the video only talks about Seattle and Portland in the title. And yes, at this point it's a rivalry between Seattle and Portland. Vancouver is just the third wheel hoping to take a spot every now and again.

I've hated Portland for almost 40 years, but we wouldn't be so driven as a club without them. League table doesn't matter when Seattle plays Portland. The league could fold, and this rivalry would remain. We both love Cascadia, our region, we just disagree on the capital.

Agreed. As a Portland Timbers supporter the visceral hatred we have for the Sounders and vice versa make this THE rivalry in MLS. We could go 3-the entire season but if our 3 wins are against the Sounders our season is a success.

I'm convinced there is only one thing that Seattle and Portland fans hate more than each other: places that aren't Cascadia. But it's like the fans consider each other the only ones worthy of spending time hating, everyone else is just so bad it's not even worth the effort.

It's surreal hearing about that nowadays. But the NASL, and MLS until more recently, relied on so much worldly talent. Part of the growth of the game here in North America includes the growth of academies, the building of great new stadiums, and more coverage of games on television and streaming services. We get the occasional Zlatan, but we're starting to nurture young talent on this side of the globe. Doubt we'll ever be as big as the Premier League, but I'm still being surprised by what's coming. One thing the video doesn't mention is that Seattle's manager is a lifelong Sounder. He signed with them in 1980 when he was 17 and played with them until the old NASL folded. He briefly played for the new version of the team when they relaunched in the 90s and became the manager in 2002 when the new owner came in. Together, they helped save the team from going under while winning 2 championships in the second division and have been working together ever since then. When the team moved to MLS in 2009, he agreed to be the top assistant coach so they could bring in someone with more experience at that level. When that coach was fired midway through 2016, he took over as interim manager. Although nobody expected him to become the permanent manager, he led the team to win its first MLS Cup months later and has guided them to 4 MLS Cup Finals in 5 years. He currently has the best playoff winning percentage of any manager in the league's 25 year history.

@@kabirconsiders Well, to be honest... I'm just a casual observer... but I have to say that it is not hard to notice the presence that either club has in their respective cities/ regions. I would say that Vancouver is likely similarly passionate, but they have not enjoyed the success of late that Seattle and Portland have. Soccer in the US has really had a meteoric rise. From basically almost nothing before 1970, to a small pro league - and more importantly, many youth leagues, in multiple regions, before 1980... and it has kept on building. The fact that women's soccer came up so fast and so strong has also been really enjoyable to watch.

So many of the soccer influences in the Pacific NW came from the English second (mainly) division blokes who introduced the game to us in the NASL days. Those players were ambassadors throughout their communities. In Seattle you have coach Schmetzer who grew up in Seattle, played in Seattle, and now coaches Seattle. Many of their staff are legends for the club. In Portland during the 70’s and 80’s we had Jimmy Conway, John Bain, the Gant brothers, and Clive Charles all of whom stayed and raised up the Portland soccer community. Charles coached both the men’s and women’s University of Portland Soccer team’s to national prominence (coaching the women to a National title and providing many US women’s National stars). He was also one of the first prominent black players (along with another former Timber, Clyde Best) to break the color barrier at West Ham United in the old premier league in England. So, both cities blessed with great soccer/football histories to be proud of.

First time I visited Portland was 2009, two years before they joined the MLS. They had Timbers flags, scarves and coasters in every single bar we visited over a couple neighborhoods. More Timbers representation than Trail Blazers. That's how much the city was behind the club. Also was living in Paraguay in 2015, went to see if the food court at the nearby shopping mall had the MLS final on (they would play La Liga, Bundesliga Serie A all morning/afternoon and move west to MLS and South American leagues as the day went on. IF no live matches, re-broadcasts. Always futbol.) ... sure enough, they were playing Timbers v Crew not on the regular mounted tvs, but the 3 tv across, 2 tv down MEGASCREEN. Think I converted a couple locals to the Timbers when they saw the Gringo in Green intently watching the match while downing Pilsen. Finally got to attend a match in 2018 with a friend sitting immediately to the right of the Timbers Army. Timber Joey apparently seldom ventures too far wide of that section made it over to ours, hoisting a fresh cut stump after a Timbers goal. Was a great time, great environment, and great Oregon beer to drink at local watering holes afterwards.

This is how crazy the playoff format is in MLS. The year Seattle won their first MLS Cup in 2016, Seattle was 2nd to last place in the Western Conference. They were 22 pts behind the conference leader, FC Dallas mid-season in week 20. They were for all intent and purposes, dead to rights. No one thought they would make the playoffs. The head coach Sigi Schmid who coached 2 teams, Columbus Crew and LA Galaxy to MLS titles prior to coaching the Sounders was just sacked and asst. coach Brian Smetzer was put in as interim coach. But fortunes turned around on July 31 when their designated #10 DP from Uruguay, Nicolas Lodeiro who played on the Uruguay National Team and signed from Boca Juniors made his debut for the Sounders. That match with LA Galaxy ended in a draw and every match afterword put them in the position to make the final (7th) playoff spot at the end of the regular season. They then won all of their playoff matches to the final. This would never happen in other leagues. Seattle since their first season in MLS back in 2009 has never missed making the playoffs. Making it to 4 finals in 5 years, wining 2 MLS Cups, 1 Supporter's Shield, 4 straight U.S. Open Cups, and 4 of 6 Cascadia Cups in the MLS era. No other team since has been so consistent.

As another example of how popular football (soccer) is getting in the US -- St. Louis City FC (an expansion team in 2023) had deposits for 30,000 season ticket seats in the first 15 minutes that they went on sale, and then 50,000 seats in the following 24 hours. That's not only a record for the MLS, but for every other major sport in the country. Some context. Up here in Cascadia we have our three cities and 10 million people tucked up here. Vancouver is about 300 miles (500 is km) from Portland and Seattle is right in the middle. Next closest city to any part of Cascadia? Over 600 miles (over 1000km) away. We are our own little region tucked in our corner. A Vancouverite will identify with a Portlander more than they will with central and eastern Canadians. When we compete, we are competing four the dominance of our little mini-country. Portland and Seattle, both being American have a very love hate relationship. They our brother so when it's versus outsiders we have each other's back. But that sibling rivalry is strong. When it comes to us competing for dominance in the region, few people fight more fiercely. Signed, a man who grew up in Portland, moved to Seattle for college, and low lives back in Portland. I watch good soccer." Regardless, it's nice to see somebody, especially a Brit, not being ignorant. I've only watched a few of your vids but this channel is really great!

I'm not the biggest soccer fan but I live in Seattle and the people here are bonkers about the Sounders. A company executive and neighbor mine died back in 2015 and had been a serious collector of Sounder memorabilia and had amassed huge a valuable collection. He donated it all to the Sounder organization before his death and has an agreement to have himself and his collection featured in the teams upcoming museum. He and his company had close ties to team. And of course he was buried in with Sounder scarf around is neck. I'd say soccer has gained a foothold in America.⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽ A banger Kabir. R I P "Barney." And FYI Kabir, Portland may be our rival in soccer, but as far as cities go. They are not in our league. 💥💥💥💥 No NHL, MLB or NFL team. Why?? Because its Portland. What team would want to locate there. They do have a decent NBA team but it would probably leave if given the chance. 😛😛 Boring, dull featureless place.

I'm a Sounder Supporter through and through and have to comment that most of the matches I've ever seen have never been a full strength squad really for either team. In my opinion I believe that adds to the back and forth of the rivalry. The schedule is often in favor of one team depending on the previous year. If they were good the year before, expect a tough schedule. The next match between these two is going to be intense for sure. 100% this is the best rivalry in the US.

Let tell you about Seattle man, I've lived here my whole life. We've always had a chip on our shoulders. A lot of the country looks at us as basically southern Alaska. An afterthought unless a major windstorm happens or a volcano blows up (look up Mt St Helens, I'll toss a link below) And Portland, because it's smaller, is kind of our little brother with an even bigger chip. Vancouver too. We're so far away from everyone else out there. It took us a long time to get a lot of professional sports at all. Both Portland and Seattle have reputations for being really posh progressive cities, but once you get out of the city proper it gets blue collar real quick. Even more so once you cross the mountains.
