Looking at our club, we've got immense potential, not only as a squad (whether it be through the academy or just young players we sign) but as a club in general, but it just seems we content ourselves with being a mid-table championship side. These last few years in particular have been rough, unstable management (imo) ever since the departure of Lee Johnson, not capitalizing enough in games that we should, and just failure to break out of this vicious cycle. We have great players right now, some examples being Tommy Conway, who came through the academy and a player who i'm sure we'll just end up selling as I dont see him wanting to spend his prime years at a mid-table championship team (even though its's the only team he's ever played for), nakhi wells, who even as an older player is still that much needed veteran presence and still a good striker and even joe williams whos a decent midfielder when he's on his day. Everything you said is true, even though a part of me wants to disagree and I want to thank you for highlighting our club by doing a video on us (smth that's not done often) even if it's pointing out our negatives. However, I do see ourselves being promoted into the prem in the next 10 years (more hoping tbh) even though we'll probably come right back down, as that would be an amazing achievement for the club, fans and even the city in itself. Sorry for the long comment, but I have finally been able to pour out some of my thoughts on our situation + I know this is a safe space when it comes to just talking about football. Rest of good day to anyone reading this. CITY TILL I DIE ❤

I grew up local to Bristol and really close to semi-pro football where every weekend I’d go to grounds all around the south west with my dad as a coach. It surprises me that the city doesn’t have a top flight club as football is genuinely huge around here and there are so many clubs around. Growing up, Bristol Rovers was the academy everyone had trials at but I don’t know anyone that made it. I think, in fairness, Bristol being so close to places like Cardiff, Bath & Gloucester where Rugby is huge could have a lot to do with the priorities of a certain city club chairman 👀

Actually we had to win at Brighton on the penultimate game of 2016-17 to guarantee safety. The 2017-18 season was exciting, reaching the league cup semi finals. Then in 2018-19 we went into our last game still with a chance of the playoffs. Our dullness only really started around the time of COVID, and there’s no sign of things getting any better soon. Im amazed we’re still attracting the crowds we are, given the tedious dross served up on the pitch.

  • @empressbulblax4436

Thanks very much for this video, I think you really nailed a lot of the problems Bristol City is facing at the moment and that if we could only get ourselves sorted out then we can finally realise our potential and become a serious contender for the top flight. I would debate your suggestion that we've been a boring team for the last 20 years though. There's been plenty of great memories from when I started going to matches about 2003 until just before Covid hit. The ones that come to mind: - Getting promoted from League One in 2007 (being part of the pitch invasion remains by best football memory.) - The play-off final at Wembley against Hull in 2008. - The horrible 2012/3 season where we ended up dead last in the Championship (I didn't say all these memories were positive!) - Winning League One and the FA Trophy in 2015- I think that was the first time we'd ever won that particular league? - Having a hard relegation scrap in 2016, only for us to rip the roof off during the calendar year of 2017. That year ended with us beating Man U in the League Cup and going to the semi-finals against Man City. - The playoff push in 2018/9 where we missed out on the final day of the season (the 8th place you mentioned in the video.) It's only really in the last 5 years that things have got really dull. We got absolutely nowhere under Pearson and played totally anonymous football. While we're not unique in having to sell our best players, so much of the money made from those big sales was never really reinvested into the squad. Add that to some iffy recruitment of mediocre players to replace the big hitters and we've never really been able to hit the level that you need to make a proper push for promotion. At least so far under Manning we've been having a real go against the teams at the top of the league and got some big results such as against Southampton a couple of months ago. As bleak as it's been recently I still believe eventually it's going to click and we'll finally start living up to our potential... maybe in the next 50 years or so. COYR

As a young Bristol city fan, almost every game I’ve been to this season in the championship, I haven’t felt a lot of passion from the players at times. Take the game against Swansea for example the other week. I was there with my mate and I think the entire lansdown stand agreed that the first half was one of the worst we’d ever seen. The was no passion or drive from the players, it looked like they’d given up on breaking their 4 game losing streak. But then in the second half we came alive again and played so much better. We went on to score and the game finished 1-0 to us. But that first half seemed to lack the drive and passion that you need as a football team. But a few weeks prior when I went to the FA cup match against West Ham, with all the odds against us we won 1-0 and Ashton gate was going mad. The players were so passionate, driven and committed to beating a much bigger opponent that it shows what we can do when we really try. Obviously it’s hard to replicate that feeling every 46 games in the league but I think if we can get that drive back, we do have the chance to get to the playoffs. It would also help if we actually spent our money on buying new players instead of just keeping it 😂

I’ve been a STH down at Bristol City for 8 seasons now. There was 3 seasons in a row (2017/18, 18/19 and 19/20) where there was a real buzz around the club and we had a real chance of playoffs but wasn’t really to be. 17/18 we were 2nd on NYE and in the Semis in the Carabo Cup, but had the team was picking itself due to injuries which wasn’t sustainable and our form nosedived. 18/19 we were really gunning for it but we had a few bad decisions in the last few games against us and sort of internally collapsed. Then 19/20 we were 7th going into COVID with a real chance and it felt like we were at the start of a run (as at the time we had a special ability to either win 10 in a row or lose 10 in a row without much in between) but then covid hit and I think we won 1 game out of the last 9. Since then really it seemed like we had a project under Nigel Pearson and were making progress on the pitch with a young, exciting team that was being strengthened year on year. But the board inexplicably sacked him after loosing to Cardiff with only 8 fit first team players and got in Manning, it kind of seems a bit stagnant now under him and there is now a real sense of flatness on and off the pitch.

As a season ticket holder it is interesting to see an outsiders perspective on our club and our complete lack of success. I agree that we don’t really know what’s going wrong and are just waiting on a big season with a bit of luck and a good run in, yet I think you did miss the mark a touch on our lack of play off attempts. Especially in 17/18, we were 2nd at Christmas and beating wolves at home until a red card which we then collapsed. That entire season was oh so close to promotion but our terrible end of season form made us finish 11th which doesn’t paint the picture at all. The next 2 seasons also saw hard play off pushes that just came up short so to say we’ve never had hopes of play offs I think was a touch wrong but really interesting video otherwise

But completely agree with a lot in this video. We have to do better. To see us go into the prem with my dad would be unforgettable, im sure im not alone.

For me I’m actually happy where we are, we have some good days, some bad days and I like the championship. It’s a good standard but genuinely interesting as teams can go on a run and suddenly shoot up the table or plummet. Personally, I do have other fans ask but I wouldn’t actually want to go up, I know that sounds a bit small minded but whilst it would be a huge achievement in reality we’d just be tanked every week and face the potential that we’d go down far less stable with much bigger debt than we have right now. Plus we’d probably have to do a Forest and buy a whole new team, so that’s no longer the team that we’ve supported to get up there, suddenly it’s just 11 random lads who may or may not do better. So I’m happy where we are. I’ve also argued with plenty of Man City and Newcastle fans who say “oh you’re jealous and you’d love to have this money” and they just don’t get that no, I wouldn’t, I wouldn’t want to lose the identity of my club. Some fans just can’t get their heads around there’s more to football than winning the Prem League and becoming European champions, actually supporting a club you have a massive connection with and enjoying that connection can mean far more.

Their academy is really impressive also I didn't know it was so prodyctive until you listed all these sales.

Cool vid. I’ve moved here from Leicester 6yrs ago and sadly I feel like the crowd is a little bit shit and never gets too excited like they all know they’ll finish 12th. People say the owners prioritise the rugby (played on same ground) and it is a fairly rich city where maybe the community favours that too.

Yeah that’s fair enough, same pain in that aspect, only difference is you are in the top league, an awful lot of us city fans would love to be in the prem even just for one season, firstly because we have never been there before but more importantly we get to see some of the best teams not only in EPL but in Europe compete against us, home and away, to be able to have the likes of Man City Man Utd arsenal Chelsea spurs and many others come to gate all in the same season would be fantastic, you get that privilege every season

Palace as a club are overachieving by finishing 14th in the Prem, like Vizeh said at least they have done entertaining players. The issue with Palace is banter culture and the new Prem fans, they didn't know what Palace have been like historically, they just see them as the mid table Prem club while the older fans who are British will still see them as the club who used to nearly go out of business every decade

As a Palace supporter I definitely see some similarities between Bristol City and us. Obviously it’s better that we’re stuck in mid-table to lower-mid-table in the Premier League rather than the Championship, but the situations are still similar. Even down to the rivalry situation, since we’ve been in different divisions than Brighton for many seasons in the last couple decades (tho thankfully it looks like our rivalry will have some staying power in the PL now). I’d love to see more success for Bristol City, it’s too big a town not to have a top tier club, and I’ve always like their badge and stadium.

Been saying this for a few years! The only reason I remember them in league 1 was because I went to their ground that season for an away match and it was the only time I saw us (QPR) lose (unbeaten at home), beyond tha, I think of them as the most permenently mid-table championship side going.

I remember the season when Bristol City finished 8th. It really felt like they were getting close to a possible promotion or at least a playoffs final. Then everything just went back to the same sort of mid season performance. Bristol as a city is for sure a sleeping giant in my view. The city itself is actually one of the more decent cities in the south and has great night life. I would say that the football culture is definitely there, it is just a little tired from having the same boring seasons and no derby games. Especially when you remember the season they finished 8th and how close they felt to having a legit product that could gain promotion. Swindon Town is possibly the only other club in the area with much of a history and I mean I guess even Swindon have played in the Premier League, so yeah it feels kinda weird to have such a booming city that is pretty well established and has it's culture, and to not see the football finally get it's time. I kind of lost hope for them really over the last few years. Very samey each year. One thing is for sure though, if Bristol did get promoted to the Prem, I believe they would realise what they are supposed to be and stay up. The fanbase is there. They have a fairly new modern ground to go with it. Just need to play better football I suppose and earn it.

I follow boston united Since promotion to national north in 2010, we've not gone up or down. Have only come remotely close to relegation twice, had 2 playoff finals and 3 semi finals. Only 1 half decent cup run in 2019 (4 wins) Most of the time we're upper midtable but never challenging for the title. 14 seasons going nowhere with virtually no cup runs. Haven't beaten a higher league side since 2010. Lost to countless lower league sides Don't really have any derby games (only last 3 or 4 years have we even had away games within 50 miles).

Im a Bristol City fan and you're right. There are 2 leagues in the Championship: those with parachute payments and those with out. The likes of Bristol City, Birmingham, Stoke have much less income. But all Championship clubs cant lose 13 mil a year for Fair Play Rules. We have been losing 20 mil a year in a bid to compete with higher wages of the the parachute teams who get vast parachute money (in comparison) for 3 years. The gap is getting harder. More fans come through the door with a good run. Also remember in covid our chairman had to maintain a staff of approx 2000 for 2 years with empty seats. He's been good overall but we wait for better times.
