I was born and raised in Marseille. My cousin grew up in Zidane's neighborhood. Despite never playing for Olympique de Marseille, he's surely one the most beloved players in Marseille. We all regret that he couldn't play even one season but that's life. Cantona, who was also born and raised in Marseille, played for Marseille in the 90's but he's on the top list of favorite players by fans. He's on my list nonetheless. Zidane is an example for everyone. We know that since he made it, we all can. Maybe not in football but in life in general. He didn't give up, had a slow but improving career and will always be remembered. His temper is known among us. While being chill most of the time, you mustn't mess with his family no matter what.

Honestly, Messi is nothing like Zidane: the elegance, the visionary passing, the physical strength (Zidane is a fairly tall guy), a ridiculously great first touch and leadership skill (you became encouraged when playing with him on your side). Messi is great dribbler but is not comparable to Zidane in the sense that he never carried a mediocre team to glory as Zidane and Maradona did in their times. 90's football was magical when putting it against the matches today (more spread of great players instead of them being at one club)

For a goal to be of real value it also has to mean something, it does not have to be just elegant. Because who cares about a friendly match ? Everyone tries staff in those. UCL Final 2002: Other than the insane beauty of this shot, it is the goal that gave Real Madrid the cup WC Final 2006: In the actual final, he stepped up to hit a penalty against the legendary Buffon... and humilitated like a rookie with the most insanely technical and perfect penalty kick ever

People put too much pressure on youngsters these days saying there done and they are only 22. Most people don't even know that xavi (25 or 26 at the time ) sat on the beach for whole 2006 champions League final. He would have considered a dead baller if social media was prevalent during that time

Fun Fact : Cruyff claimed he verbally agreed a deal with Zidane in 1996, but pulled the plug on the move when the Catalans sacked him. At that time he was playing for Bordeaux Imagine that pairing of Romario and Zidane, also in the future with Figo, Prime Ronaldo, Stoichkov

There is always a debate on who is the GOAT and the usual suspects always come up but when you think of it in terms of position, nobody is close to Zidane. He was the ultimate goalscoring playmaker. It was like he could see a few seconds into the future and slow down time. He did stuff with his weak foot that most players can't do with their strong foot. Technique, magnifique.

Back then it was totally different. We had no internet etc. It was very very rare to see French football(unless you lived in France) on TV.... It was rare to see any foreign football other than English and Italian(huge back then) football. So Zidane was relatively unknown even tho he had done well in Europe. I remember in the build up to Euro 96 there was a lot of hype about him as Juve had just signed him. People were very excited to see him. To see how good he was. He was tipped at that stage to be a great player. He actually flopped during those Euros. People were expecting more. However he then went on to show everyone what a beautiful footballer he was at Juve, Real and for France. A total footballing legend.

Zidane and R9 are on the same level, and both are way beyond Ronaldinho. I seriously cannot believe people think Ronaldinho was on the same level as those two. Ronaldinho was flashy but he'd never dribbled like R9 and never understood the game like Zidane.

In Sweden we have this iconic ex-footballer named Johnny Ekström, famous for his not too overly bright quotes. 1992 he played in Cannes with Zizou and told a footballer friend and ex teammate (Glenn Strömberg) over the phone "We have this 17 year old youngster here that everyone talks about. He do sole trix and stuff. His name is Zidane and I doubt he will be anything" lol.
