Bridge Evolution - USS Enterprise D

Here's another lame video. It covers the changes, updates and modifications made to the uss enterprise ncc-1701-d bridge set over its life. That's "Encounter at Farpoint," up to Generations.

The raised command chairs for Generations is because they shot the film 2.39:1 and raising that area decreases vertical space between actors' faces which is needed for widescreen. It's a nice visual to have the increasing heights as the depth increases too.

  • @Jack_Stafford
    @Jack_Stafford5 жыл бұрын

A lot of people miss that during the first season the command chairs were meant to appear futuristic by being bolted to the wall behind rather than securely below them to the floor. Of course this created a problem with some of the, ahem, larger actors that sat in the chairs especially when acting and sitting down in the chair quickly or rocking the chair back and forth. In the first season that back wall near the floor was painted white to show off that there was no floor support, and then when they added the sturdier floor support they then darkened that so that it wasn't such an apparent change. But it did change what was supposed to kind of look like a floating futuristic chair to just another chair bolted to the floor now with extra darkness and shadow underneath them since there was no longer a reason to emphasize this futuristic and novel feature, but instead a need to camouflage it with supports, carpet and painted background of the same color.

Love these in depth videos! I really like the "Generations" bridge. It looks more busy and somehow more professional with the consoles at the sides and much better in general with the raised command chair. And Worf got a chair finally!!! What i didn't like was the lighting. It's a shame they didn't keep the ship. Contrary to Picard who seemed to be pretty indifferent to the loss of his ship at the end of the Movie, to me it felt like my most beloved TNG Character died with it. (i still hate the Ent -E)

Another change to season 2 was the black glossy lcars screens along the back wall were *continued around the corners* and on the sides of either end. This coincided with Geordie needing a fittingly elaborate engineering console, and seemed to make sense also aesthetically. It did make the whole back wall seem more of a computer center alcove rather than just, a wall. And very rarely were the chairs for those stations ever pulled out that were laboriously designed to fit flush against the wall like a drawer. It's odd that they would have been used such a Custom Engineered feature. In every episode there should have been someone sitting in one or two of those stations. But usually they would just go back there and stand, or worse yet kind of sit on the control panels. While they were discussing whatever anomaly.

I was lucky to have a very long and involved tour of that set, (there actually were two because they did weddings there and didn't want to shut down the ride during them so they had a spare, also used on extremely busy days), but only two of us paid for the behind the scenes tour and the man was more than happy to let us spend as much time as we wanted there. One thing that kind of irritates me that a lot of people don't catch that are supposed to be experts, is able to show the Vegas bridge and say that it is the official Bridge. The easiest way to tell it's not the official bridge is the difference in *height of the rail behind the captain's chair* . For the Vegas attraction, they had to make the slope from aft to front a lot less steep to accommodate wheelchairs and also so people wouldn't trip going down the ramp. On the real set the floor behind the captain's chair was at least two feet higher then the center section, but on the Vegas set it was only about 6 in. So at a glance, yes it looks almost identical, but the captain's headrest is all the way up near the top of the rail, which is we all know from watching the show is there were a couple of feet there where the back or aft part of the bridge was raised up that was *very much flattened in the Vegas attraction* . I've even see people that worked on/in and built the official sets look at that Vegas version and talk about the details of the shooting set they worked on, and they're *not talking about their own work at all* they're talking about a Vegas attraction that had to be altered for handicapped access and made out of much cheaper materials that the public wasn't supposed to even touch. It was very good of course, but it was not meant for screen use and of course the lighting was different and many other telltale signs. But the easiest one is look at that chair, and if that headrest is near the top of the rail, you're looking at either one of the Vegas reconstructions or some of the others that have been made, because that slope is an issue when you're going to have the public walking around with no handrails, even the steadiest person can get their sneakers stuck in the carpet and trip. So it's an accommodation that they had to make in order to avoid people falling down into accommodate Walkers and Wheelchairs and things of that nature, and of course baby carriages and everything else people tend to bring with them. The TV shooting set didn't have those requirements. So can have the app level several feet higher, which also worked for the front camera angle so that all the actors were visible which isn't necessary on a tourist attraction.

The grates over the lights in the turbolift alcoves were there in the series, but they were barely noticeable in the brighter lighting. Sometimes you could see the pattern when alert lights came on. The black cardboard was to cover unwanted reflections, but they changed the way the bridge was lit in season 3 so that they wouldn't be needed anymore. I find it funny that the side consoles in Generations are made to look like they have the same hidden chairs as the aft consoles, but then they have fixed stools too.

The bridge used in the movie. The side stations. As I understand it. They always wanted them. But they never had the budget to put them in for the TV show and they used the movie to put in what they always wanted. Thanks to a bigger budget.

I think Doug Drexler mentioned it that they used the cardboard deals over the LCARS aft station consoles because the reflections showed the camera crews too much. They changed the screens to it wouldn't be so reflective I think they did this in season 4. Also I think the reason why for the series finale the Captain's chair wasn't the original I think it was reported it had been stolen so hence why it wasn't there.

Whenever there was a distracting glare of the lights on a console, they'd cover it up with black cardboard (or possibly something like foamcore). They did that on the original series, too. The S1 captains chair was still around after the s2 replacement, as it shows up often in the battle bridge set (or whatever other ship's bridge it was representing on any particular week). But 7 years is a long time for a chair to last in storage without getting cannibalizied/repurposed....or sure, maybe stolen.

And I think around the time I saw Star Trek Discovery I found your channel... And everything changed from that day on. Now I am totally looking forward to the Picard series and I think every time I see your videos in my subscriptions, it improves my mood significantly, I am nearly jumping with joy to hear and see your explanations and humor. Thank you for sharing this. You have noticed more details of the Enterprise D bridge than I did. Even Worf did get to sit at the tactical station (ST: Generations) but it didn't last. The saucer section crashed landed on the planet and it made Worf fly from his post and fell on the floor with such a thump.

They added the far left and right stations in Generations because movies are in widescreen and of corse during TNG it was broadcast in 4:3! If they left the set as it was it would have looked bare and unappealing. I read/heard this in an interview somewhere years ago.

Actually, I did notice a couple minor changes made in Season 6. The yellow ship schematics next to the alcove where the ready room is located was altered midway through the season to now appearing fully plain yellow. The red carpeting was altered again to having little square patterns. You'll notice this in close up shots of either the floor or the small back wall area behind the command chairs. Whereas if you watch Season 5's "The Inner Light" for instance when Picard's lying unconscious, there's close ups of the red carpeting and it's clearly more dotted patterns. And maybe it's just the lighting during the last two seasons, but the grey carpeting looks to have a slight bluish tint.

Since the Enterprise is being Refitting, Can I Get a Chair?" Capt. Picard:"Yes, You Can get a Chair, Mr. Worf."

The biggest thing about the Generations bridge (as well as the Yesterday's Enterprise bridge) is that the lighting is far better and darker and feels much less like at TV studio. They've done a good job with the recent Treks making the lighting more appropriate on the bridges.

Excellent breakdown! I've always liked the Generations bridge, myself. How about a video that traces the bridge evolution of the original 1701 and 1701-A? There were many minor changes including between The Cage and TOS, TMP-III, and even between the 1701-A in IV and V and VI. Then of course Discovery throws a huge visual reboot wrench in the works.

So, Picard season 3 spoilers below..... Fascinating that they brought back the Enterprise D, but not as we last saw her. Instead of just rebuilding the Enterprise D saucer and pairing it with a spare secondary hull, Geordie also returned it to its pre-Generations status. Because it's the version most familiar to fans?

Hehe poor Worf, seven years a stand up duty with no chair or any seat on the bridge, then finally in 'generations' he got one and the ship crashed on a planet and was lost. Then at the next and very new and very modern Enterprise E the bridge has again no chairs or stools for the tactical consoles.. That means for worf, stand up again.. Now i know why worf has gone to DS9 and took conmand of the Defiant, she has a command chair, he hehe.. Well great video, as well as the other star trek videos too!
