@Call me Shaggy These traditions are being 'imported' to Europe as well. And more and more people combine it with European traditions and they expect you to attend twice (and more importantly: bring presents twice). So you're expected to attend the engagement party and a bridal shower/bachelor party. An American style baby shower and the traditional maternity visit. At this rate we might even become more materialistic than you Americans...

I had to decorate a bra. Bride-to-be is my former roommate. She is very evangelical, innocent and prudish. I'm very lesbian. I decorated my bra with rainbows. Her even more evangelical friends interpreted it as the rainbow of Noah's covenant... I've been to my fair share of weird bridal parties, but for me this was the weirdest experience. Like an alternate universe. They spoke a completely different language.

One of my best friends asked me to be a bridesmaid. Our friendship ended immediately after the wedding. She was a monster for an entire year. I have refused 2 other friends asking. I heard from mutual friend she was getting a divorce 2 years later. I got engaged and sent her a text Message asking her to be a bridesmaid so I could pay her back for the h*** she put me and the other women through. She has not responded yet 😂

@Janet Mainor I had a friend stop talking to me after I missed her wedding. My grandmother had passed. I would have missed the funeral (also, her wedding was 4 hrs away from me). Eventually, she apologized for yelling at me, but the damage was done. I did have one wedding as a BM where everything went smoothly. It was beautiful. And one of the weddings I mentioned before would have been ok, the bride was fine but it was her crazy sister I had to contend with 😅😭

Finally someone is revealing the truth about this horrendous institution. Here’s a reality check. If you’re making someone take several days off from work (which in the US is most likely to be unpaid at worst or cost them valuable vacation days they won’t be able to take an actual vacation with at best), spend tons of money they don’t have on a useless dress and presents for you, on top of travel expenses (gas, plane, hotel), you HATE that person

This hits home. Every time my younger daughter was asked to be a bridesmaid she would tell me in a dreary voice, and I would ask what's what's wrong. Shouldn't you be happy? She would always respond that she didn't have the money and her calendar would be booked. I think that is why she had no bridesmaids at her wedding.

@Aimee Lynn 💯 Back in the day, when I was a bridesmaid, we just had to buy the dress and show up for the bridal shower, dress rehearsal, and wedding. But for my wedding, I paid for the bridesmaid dresses, so they just had to show up for the rehearsal and wedding. My sisters and 2 close friends were the bridesmaids. They were young and not yet working, so I don't think any bought me a bridal shower gift, and that was ok with me because I was in the same financial boat. I was just happy that they shared my special day.

My best friend was the best bride ever. She opted not to force the bridesmaids get specific dresses. She said to just get something of our choice that was appropriate, affordable, and rewearable, as long as it was in a shade of her color choice. There was no bachelorette party. It was just her and I staying at a nice hotel the night before the wedding, doing facial masks, whitening our teeth, talking, laughing, reminiscing and me just being there for her as she excitedly looked forward to her big day. It was the best night and it only deepened our bond of friendship. The big day was chill and calm, but very beautiful, memorable and meaningful.

This is an excellent point about women being sucked into the wedding industrial complex even when they're NOT the ones getting married. Women already have a tough time maintaining financial stability for so many reasons. Saaaaame I took vacation days time in the first month of my 1st brand new job after grad school to drive cross-country for a former (lol) friend's big wedding, stayed late to help her parents clean up the day of the wedding, had to drive back at 6am the next day (10 hour drive, on 6 hours of sleep) to be back at work by Monday. Was told by the bride I didn't do enough to contribute to the wedding, and that I also didn't care because I didn't attend the bachelorette party which was a week before beginning aforementioned brand new job. Was also 26 and broke having just finished grad school btw...Let's just say my parents told me not to be friends with her anymore because of the unbelievable entitlement and selfishness...

This is y I refuse to be a bridesmaid. It's a six month commitment to a marriage that only lasts 2 years. The group chats at 2am, the drunk fittings, the yoga retreats, the 9 am fitness program on the day of the wedding, the atrocious outfit that makes me look like a 9 year old princess, the destination that is too expensive to get to, the weird bachelorette parties with creepy looking strippers, the constant micromanagement and the barrage of threats. After all that the couple decides to get divorced in the 3rd month mark and once their dog custody battle is over they r officially divorced before their 2nd anniversary.
