@Call me Shaggy These traditions are being 'imported' to Europe as well. And more and more people combine it with European traditions and they expect you to attend twice (and more importantly: bring presents twice). So you're expected to attend the engagement party and a bridal shower/bachelor party. An American style baby shower and the traditional maternity visit. At this rate we might even become more materialistic than you Americans...
Thousands of women suffer from this every year. Together we can stop this.

I had to decorate a bra. Bride-to-be is my former roommate. She is very evangelical, innocent and prudish. I'm very lesbian. I decorated my bra with rainbows. Her even more evangelical friends interpreted it as the rainbow of Noah's covenant... I've been to my fair share of weird bridal parties, but for me this was the weirdest experience. Like an alternate universe. They spoke a completely different language.

@Janet Mainor I had a friend stop talking to me after I missed her wedding. My grandmother had passed. I would have missed the funeral (also, her wedding was 4 hrs away from me). Eventually, she apologized for yelling at me, but the damage was done. I did have one wedding as a BM where everything went smoothly. It was beautiful. And one of the weddings I mentioned before would have been ok, the bride was fine but it was her crazy sister I had to contend with 😅😭

Finally someone is revealing the truth about this horrendous institution. Here’s a reality check. If you’re making someone take several days off from work (which in the US is most likely to be unpaid at worst or cost them valuable vacation days they won’t be able to take an actual vacation with at best), spend tons of money they don’t have on a useless dress and presents for you, on top of travel expenses (gas, plane, hotel), you HATE that person

This hits home. Every time my younger daughter was asked to be a bridesmaid she would tell me in a dreary voice, and I would ask what's what's wrong. Shouldn't you be happy? She would always respond that she didn't have the money and her calendar would be booked. I think that is why she had no bridesmaids at her wedding.

@Aimee Lynn 💯 Back in the day, when I was a bridesmaid, we just had to buy the dress and show up for the bridal shower, dress rehearsal, and wedding. But for my wedding, I paid for the bridesmaid dresses, so they just had to show up for the rehearsal and wedding. My sisters and 2 close friends were the bridesmaids. They were young and not yet working, so I don't think any bought me a bridal shower gift, and that was ok with me because I was in the same financial boat. My best friend was the best bride ever. She opted not to force the bridesmaids get specific dresses. She said to just get something of our choice that was appropriate, affordable, and rewearable, as long as it was in a shade of her color choice. There was no bachelorette party. It was just her and I staying at a nice hotel the night before the wedding, doing facial masks, whitening our teeth, talking, laughing, reminiscing and me just being there for her as she excitedly looked forward to her big day. It was the best night and it only deepened our bond of friendship. The big day was chill and calm, but very beautiful, memorable and meaningful.

This is an excellent point about women being sucked into the wedding industrial complex even when they're NOT the ones getting married. Women already have a tough time maintaining financial stability for so many reasons. At a time when I was broke and in between jobs, I was expected to fly halfway across the country twice even before the wedding, and offered zero financial assistance. I was maid of honor and my friend appreciated my efforts, so I didn't complain.

I went to the courthouse and threw a big reception for everyone afterwards. Still married and lasted longer than all of the weddings I was in as a bridesmaid/matron of honor.
The “no worries” with the exclamation points and sparkle emojis is so real that’s how you know someone isn’t happy
I paid my own way to Hawaii, made all of her decor, and was forced to do the bride’s own choreography to Hall &Oats and the Jonas Brothers, only to be publicly offended for my sexuality when the bride got drunk the night before the wedding and basically never spoken to again once her wedding was over. That ending tho'... with that Bride of Chucky "mwahahaha" cackle. So hysterical!! 🤣🤣😆😆
Honestly this is why I'm glad I'm a nerodivergent nerd who has no friends

I'm neurotypical (possibly) and all my friends just disappeared after high school and college and Job Corps.
I remember from the Buzzfeed days, Quinta made a very funny sketch mocking horror movies called “wedding season” or something similar. She is just great!!
Uh oh. Bet this sketch pissed off more than a few brides to be. 😆 Seriously, kids, elope! Your friends and family will be SO grateful. If you've attended one big wedding, you've attended them all.

Or get married at the courthouse and have a nice dinner afterwards. I don't have many friends, so that's probably what's going to happen with me.

My parents dont want us to elope. My brother did that and i guess everyone was bummed they couldnt be at the ceremony. Trust me, i wish my fiance and i could elope 😓 But all my friends are broke/busy and i am disabled so i absolutely will not be doing all this dumb pre-wedding shit.

@@kellylyons1038 Well hey, since it's your parents pushing for the ceremony, you'd be perfectly justified informing Mom and Dad that all the arrangements are up to them.
I would watch this docuseries cuz I've lived it 😂
I'm proud of how chill and fun our wedding was. No one had to do anything for us. It was literally a booze cruise where everyone wore whatever they wanted (my coworker wore his safety yellow shirt to test me lol) and the open bar was open even before the ceremony, which only lasted like 10 minutes. That's how you do it.
3:13 the cycle of abuse continues.
I've never been a bridesmaid or invited to anyone's wedding. And I'm broke too, that's probably why. Life is a popularity contest 😢

Less people are getting married, and the people who do are burned out from three to four years of covid and laws that shift on a dime and are equally likely to have a huge reception and not file the certificate as they are to run away and get legally bound without telling anyone as they are to just do it the normal way and then dissolve it in exactly 8 months, because you and I both have been around long enough to know that is how long it takes and then they will do it again next year I would not worry about it too much. I would worry about living as authentically as you can and know that this whole thing was once pretty standard, but the lines are made up and the rules don't matter anymore

My gay ex-bf was a “bridesmaid” in several weddings while we were together. I was pleasantly surprised towards the beginning, but it actually became an annoyance towards the end. I didn’t even know half of them, as they were often from his work at a university.
After years of being a bridesmaid, I decided that my gifts for my own bridesmaids were going to be things they needed for the wedding and a personal gift for each. I bought the girls their bridesmaids dresses and jewlery for the wedding and then each something individual. My sister and sister-in-law were the only 2 local bridesmaids and they were such a big help. They were such a help.
I have a bridal shower to attend next week, a pricey brunch, and then a destination wedding in the Caribbean at the end of the month. Mercifully, it's no gifts!
3:05 the "COME OUHN"s got me 😂😂😂
Quintas acting is the best in this. Everyone else seems like a comedian playing funny while shes acting serious and more believable.

I love SNL for bringing those "serious" topics to the forefront an putting them in a lighter version of "seriousness"!!!🙏😍😂
I’m sorry but when she slapped her with the clipboard I lost it
When my then-GF-now-wife demanded that we don't have a big wedding I knew she was the one. She hates weddings with a fiery passion of a thousand suns, it's awesome.
I have been a bridesmaid 6 times and I can tell you that skit was accurate and well researched.
I just got back from a bachelorette party and I want so badly to forward this to the bride.,..... 1:35 hit home lol

"Whenever a girl starts calling me sis, that's when I know I'm in trouble." i love bowen
My brother's wife wanted me to be a bridesmaid and I almost went through with it. I backed out at the last minute and opted to be the videographer...it's just cringe to me. My husband and I had a small wedding with none of that bridesmaid best man ring bearer stuff. ...different strokes 🤦🤷
