★ Brian's Song: Behind The Scenes ★
A behind-the-scenes look at "Brian's Song" (1971), one of the best guy-cry movies ever made. It was literally a watershed event when ABC aired this buddy movie. Grown men failed to blink back tears. Half of all television sets in America were tuned to "Brian's Song", the Peabody and Emmy Award-winning made-for-TV film about the unlikely friendship between Chicago Bears' teammates Brian Piccolo and Gayle Sayers. It's held up very well. Still brings a tear or two.
The movie starred James Caan, Billy Dee Williams and Jack Warden, and was directed by Buzz Kulik and written by William Blinn. Based on the book "I Am Third" by Gale Sayers and Al Silverman. Music by Michel Legrand. This retrospective was produced and edited by Tom Barry.

One of the best sports movies ever made. There is no way you can watch this and not cry. The music for this movie is just epic. Gale Sayers and Brian Piccolo forever.

Imagine if they played during Walter Payton's era or vice versa and the NFL had the wishbone formation with these three in the backfield. WOW!!!! RIP brothers!!!!
James Caan is now with Brian and Gale and my Grandfather. RIP 🙏 Guy's. What a hell of a backfield. That music stills get you. Tears

I became a bears fan in Idaho that night after abc. In 1971. Long dry spell I'll be a bear till I die. I still cry. Cahn played him so well. And the bears lived with diversity accepted it and blended well. My team was assembled by your grandfather greatest team ever. And Pappa bear I love you. The back field the offensive defensive lines the secondary. Two coaches. Your last chess piece was out nut job from BYU. And poppa bear gave us all the 85 bears. Best friends were #9 and #34. I got a 8x10 glossy their backs to the camera waiting to take the field just like sayers and piccolo. And fed ex hub in Chicago is on sayers avenue.

2022 and still crying
I moved from Tallahassee to Ft Lauderdale in 1957 after 7th grade. One of the first people I met was Brian at little league football practice at Holiday Park (where Chris Everett grew up on the tennis court). Brian was a halfback and I was a halfback and QB so we were together all the time. Brian was full of life, always smiling and joking around. He was also a hard nosed 13 year old run up the Briar Patch back. We went to different schools and were friends and rivals in all sports from 8th grade thru high school. He went to tiny Central Catholic High Raiders and I went to mighty Ft Lauderdale High Flying L's. In the opening football game of the 1960 season the mighty L's opened with Central Catholic. A warm up game before taking on the big boys. Well, it didn't go exactly as planned because of Brian and their QB Bill Zloch (who later quarterbacked Notre Dame). Brian was like 5'10" and 185 and ran like a Csonka. The game ended 19-19 and it's still considered one of the biggest upsets in Broward County football history. In the movie they made a mistake when they said Prep All American Tucker Fredrickson went to Central Catholic with Brian. Tucker (who was the first draft pick in the NFL draft in 1965) went to South Broward High not Central Catholic. Caan didn't look 1 iota like Brian but he sure got his personality to a T! Rest in Peace, my friend.

I think its amazing that a 1 hr 45 min Movie of the Week fifty years old is still such a common topic of conversation. Everyone I know has watched it numerous times. I think if producers had known what a success it would be they would have released it to theaters & given it a bigger budget.
Thank you, James Caan, for your brillance as an actor and your great spirit as a man. You have blessed generations and I am so grateful that I lived during your lifetime. You have now crossed over and are with Brian and Gale and all the cloud of witnesses. Thank you, thank you, and thank you! We will all see you...in the morning!

The most heartbreaking thing I ever saw and I can’t ever forget the tears that I felt for watching that movie 😭😭😭
I was 10 year's old when this came out 11/30/1971 that night I watched my grandfather cry like a baby 👶and so did I. Great movie and it was true. So I became a football player and I love Brian and Gale. RIP Boy's including my grandfather.

I saw this movie when it was first aired. I never forgot it. Absolutely amazing movie and the title song is unbelievable. God bless everyone involved.
James Caan is the best!
One of the best movies ever!! The theme song breaks me down every time.
I used to play the theme song, "The Hands of Time", on the piano growing up. I now have it on my Playlist. I love it.
Considering the era of this movie I'm glad it was so accepted due to the relationship between those two. People and there capacity to connect regardless of differences
First book I ever read....matter of fact my email is after that book! I am third. I cry every time!!!
Something for Joey was another tear jerker.
Superb movie.
I can't count the number of times I've watched this movie and I still cry every time. I was 6 or 7 at the time when Gale and Brian started playing for the Bears. I was a girl, but I LOVED football and still do. On Sundays, after church and chores, we went to my grandparents for dinner and afterwards, dad, grandpa, and I would watch the game. I never learned why I wasn't hearing Gale's name after his injury. Then when he was back the next year, he was just as good as ever, but then I was no longer hearing Picc's name and I remember finding his name funny. Eventually I quit asking about why he wasn't playing. Then came the movie Brian's song. I think I was 12 at the time. I finally learned what had happened to both of them, and I cried so hard through that movie, all because of their friendship and what they did for each other. Last year when I was in my Orthopedist's office, I had my Gale Sayers jersey on. We spent more time talking about that than anything else. He loved that jersey so much. I told him I had Piccolo's jersey also, and I rarely wore them because I didn't want anything to happen to them. As I was leaving, I could hear my surgeon talking to a resident about the jersey and I almost took it off and gave it to him since I had a shirt underneath it. I thought about it for several months, and when I went back to see him, I told him I had something for him. Both jerseys were in a fresh white bag on hangers, and when he opened it and saw them, he was stunned. I told him that I had nobody in my family who I would hand them down to because I was the only one who loved them that much, so since I knew how he felt about them (especially Sayers), I told him that when he could no longer enjoy them, I wanted him to hand them down to someone else who would appreciate them as much as he and I did. I don't remember much about the surgery I needed, but I remember talking about Gale Sayers and Walter Payton. As I was leaving, I could hear him telling his colleagues what I had given him.

@@jamesgale2486 No, but "Sweetness" definitely came up. My surgeon LOVED Sayers and Payton. When I gave him my Sayers and Piccolo jerseys, I told him that they had to stay together, just like they did back in the 60's. I think as a 9 or 10yo girl, I loved the football games more than either my dad or grandpa. We watched them every Sunday afternoon, same with baseball games, but football was my favorite sport. All 3 of those players along with more than I want to name right now belong in a league all their own because of their talent.
one of 2 movies I cry like a baby every time
Kido when I watched this always enjoyed James Caan work Awesome Actor GodBless ❤️🙏
Loved this movie... Billy Dee Williams best performance ever...... 💋❤️😍😍👍😭😭💋
Watching this on the anniversary of the initial airing of the film-Nov. 30, 2023.
I saw Brian's Song WHEN it premiered on tv. I wasn't EVEN into FOOTBALL. I DID SHED TEARS AT THE END, BRIAN PICCOLO was , SO YOUNG.THE ENDING NARRATION & MUSIC, GETS YOU EVERY TIME.
Brian's Song is such a tear-jerker that I'm crying just reading these comments.
00:49 , watching this in 8th grade in 71, it was all you could do to not cry...Every dude that had a heart cried, but, you wouldn't let ANYONE see you do it...It's nice, now, having lived a long life that I can just appreciate Jimmy Cann and Billy D for their heartwarming portrayal of these two great athletes...Thanks for this behind the scenes upload! I just watched the movie after at least 45 years of not seeing it...A beautiful glimpse into a time long gone...:(...

RIP James Caan. This movie came out when i was 3 years old. I think I saw it when I was 4. 1st movie I remember crying to.
I have gale sayers jersey I watch the whole movie it was sad it was too emotional of Brian has cancer billy Dee Williams played gale good to sayers gave him permission rest in heaven Brian piccolo and also gale sayers
Whoever was involved in the remake of this classic should not have a job in entertainment ever again. I didn't even think about watching the one which was shown recently and hopefully those who did will see the real version .

The first movie was perfection and could not be improved upon. The remake was nothing in comparison.
The two movies that will always cause me to shed a tear are Brian's song and born free. This movie was made shortly after Brian passed. Can you imagine how the Bear players felt about reliving this tragic event again.
Just seen it on my phone last week, and cried like a 3 yr old girl
I still cry❤❤❤❤❤
I cried alot while watching this movie
Sometimes I think I have a chance of watching the movie without crying IF that theme music is not played... but once that music starts playing there go the tears!
A timeless GREAT GREAT movie Watching it 52 years later is still gut wrenching and emotional ! Thanku for this post for One of the best sports movies EVER made !

I agree. I watched it for the 8th time tonight. I always tear up.
Gale Sayers was the Athletic Director of my school, Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois, in 1977 when I started there. I'm so glad I got to meet him and get his autograph.
My dear son was recently diagnosed with what they think is the same cancer Brian had. I have always loved this movie but now it really tears me up. Please say a prayer for my son 🙏🙏🙏
Chicago your my inspiration
I love ❤️ you Bryant ❤️

RIP now to Gale Sayers and Dick Butkus.
I can't ever not watch it when I get a chance. I feel like it's woven into the fabric of my being
I have seen this movie at least a dozen times and teared up each and every time.

First time I ever teared up over a movie. This movie launched the careers of Williams and Caan.
If you are a man and do not cry during the “I love Brian Piccolo” speech I do not want to know you.
THIS T.V. MOVIE SET THAT BAR SO VERY HIGH AND SOME MAY HAVE COME CLOSE BUT NONE EVER REACHED IT.
James Caan looked way too healthy for a man dying of cancer

Come on, a BTS video of Brian's Song without Sayer's speech? That speech has to be in here!
RIP
Men cry for this because it captures a relationship the way men really have them. We see ourselves in it. I especially love the scene where Brian tries to make Gale mad enough to work harder on his rehab by calling him a n*gger. Their bond and trust was such that Gale just laughed at the idea the Pic would try to call him that. My best friend calls me Shrek, and I call him Donkey. We have played more nasty pranks on each other than I can recall. I have trouble imagining two women treating each other the way we have and being friends, but we have fun, we talk big shit together, and most importantly in those moments when either of us was really in need, the other was there, 100%.
In the most loving, respectful memory of Dick Butkus and the front four of the Chicago Bears , and.... Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers, Walter Peyton, and hundreds more. We will remember you.
Go Deacs!
Can't hear what they're saying, music is too loud!
James Caan Brain 🧠 song P Diddy loves ❤️ white men for a reason
James Caan- all 4'8" and 150 lbs. of Fullback. No wonder Sayers career got cut short!!
Since everyone is going to make believe that James Caan made this movie great all by himself just because he's no longer alive, I shall take this opportunity to thank the great Billy Dee Williams for his performance. Next they'll convince themselves that Gale Sayers never existed. Sheesh
