What a beautiful tribute from legendary producer Michel Legrand❤ Brian Piccolo died from lung cancer at 26, and left a wife and three daughters in the prime of his life. He was a star running back for the Chicago Bears and was the number one rusher in the nation for Wake Forest his senior year. He and Gale Sayers were roommates and best friends…Can you imagine…I had the privilege to meet Gale at a press conference in Winter Park, FLorida and wrote the proclamation from the then Mayor he was presented with during a banquet. When I met Gale alone before the press came in, I felt as though Brian Piccolo’s spirit was actually in the room with us. It still haunts me, in a good way, to this day! True story! ❤ When we remember Brian it is not for how he died, but how he lived… how he did live! (quoted From Brian’s Song)…

Thanks for posting this because I absolutely love this movie. Many say the original is best, but for me this one is tops. Whatever corny moments it has are far outnumbered by those that are great. Peter O’toole is so superb and brings the Arthur Chipping character to life in such a definitive way with such expression that there’s many moments where I’m either fascinated, inspired or even chocked up to tears. The part where Petula shines and steals the spotlight on the school stage leaving everyone in awe is just so cool. Their unlikely pairing and romance of love found by chance and then lost by tragedy that takes you from elated highs to rock bottom lows is so endearing. I’ve watched this many times since I first discovered it 30 years ago and still enjoy it now and again.

I had the fortune to see him reprise the Artful Dodger role many years later on stage in San Jose, California. He was of course much too old for the role at that point, but makeup and suspension of disbelief can do wonders. I was thrilled to see my childhood idol in person! I’m not sure I realized at the time that he had essentially originated that role. RIP Davey. You gave joy and happiness to so many in your life. I’m kind of glad you didn’t end up being a jockey!

Remember when the movies used to show reasons why black and white people could work together and live together and get along together instead of trying to convince blacks that they were victims and whites that they are hateful people so that they could divide us and control us?
