Gale sayers was one of my all time greatest players. He was freaking electrifying when he took the field. Unbelievably talented as an athlete, and a great man in life. I will never forget him. So you can guess how old I must be. I remember when he was a rookie. He blew everyone's mind he was so good.

He wasn't just good, he was GREAT!. The spirit, the commitment, the conviction to do better and to play the game . He showed courage and with Brian at his side, he always, ALWAYS played his best. Thats what good players do.

You can shout that we are the Chicago Bears! History is what makes games worthy of stories that we all want to hear and see, Brians Song was the one for me.

I'm not sure I ever knew anybody that did not cry like a baby watching this movie and I openly admit that I cried like a baby. Never knew him when he played for Chicago. I never heard of him before this movie, but by the time the movie was over I loved Brian Piccolo...

Gale Sayers you were my favorite running back I read your book I am third when I was a young child I read it from cover to cover as soon as the book came out I went and bought it with my hard-earned money Heights at age it was a lot for me to get the money for the book but that was a Christmas present for me my dad limited me 2 $20 for Christmas and one of the presents I wanted was I am third. Power speed everything you wanted in a running back and I watch the movie Brian's Song it brought a tear to my eye now I hope you two are reunited in heaven

I watched the movie the first time it aired. It would be aired Wizard Of Oz-like for a few years after. The network would advertise a couple of weeks prior and I’d start crying just knowing it was coming on in two weeks.

I remember Brian Piccolo, I think his spirit lives with me, I never met him. He's always in the back of my mind. I always wondered when he died, they did a remake of Brian's Song and they gave the date he died. Now I know why I never knew when he passed.....it was the day I got drafted into the Army.

I remember watching this movie in middle school. The impact it had on me, i still to this day say that the courage that Bryan Piccilo showed what most don't know what it means to be the heart of a team, but that man did. He knew how to show his team mates love and kindness, how to push them to become better. As for Gale Sayers, there is a man anyone can respect, but more so he showed his love and compasion for a team mate that no one knew, and said you think I deserve this award, no my team mate does. RIP Gale and Brian, and know that you will always be remebered.

I am old enough to remember the career of Gale Sayers. I was then not a Bears or NFC fan instead was and still am a Bills fan. I never heard of Brian Piccolo at the time but I do have a story of when I first heard his name. It was 1970 and I was reading an article by a syndicated sports writer in the Buffalo morning paper. The article was written right after the Pro Football Writer Awards Dinner and this writer was there. I do not recall his name unfortunately. Fifty three years is a long time. He wrote about the relationship between Sayers and Piccolo. He wrote how Piccolo and Sayers would poke fun at each other even good natured racial stuff. He wrote how they were more than just friends but truly real brothers. That was 1970, the movie came out in 1971 and to this day I still remember that article about these two brothers written just days before Brian passed. Whenever I can muster the courage to watch this movie (you can’t watch it dry-eyed) and alone, I always recall that article. That sports writer knew both men and he conveyed just how strong that bond was between them. I wish I could remember who he was. What he said was touching but then everything about Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers is touching.

I remember when this movie came out and I got to watch it! Football was a Very big deal in my home and I Love it still to this day! High School, College, and Pro Football remain as the number one sport. I guess that is what sparked my interest in watching this movie that has stuck with me all of these years! Rest In Peace Brian Piccolo and Gayle Sayers who played for the Chicago Bears!

I remember seeing this when it first came out in the early 70s. Watched it again in the late 70s playing HS football. Great movie. I wonder how many of today's NFL players have the honor and integrity of these two?

I doubt many of today's players do... and I'm sure many don't know of one or the other or both. But that's today's world. That's just the reality of it.

This speech, given by Gayle Sayer as he received this prestigious award in sports, was the turning point for the better in race relations across the United States during 1973. That summer, the movie "Brian Song" opened in movie theaters in Massachusetts. At that time, I was a freshman at Bridgewater State College, now a State University. I waa one of about 30 Black, Cape Verdean, and Hispanic students, who were some of the first group of students of color to be recruited and accepted to this very white institutiion, a somewhat hostile environment by some students and professors, who were not happy to receive us. By 2nd semester, most people had seen the movie, Brian Song, and I had learned to play the theme song from that movie to near perfection, because of the beauty of both the message of brotherhood, as well as the beautiful musical arrangement. I played this piano piece during our first Afro American Society Talent Show, which was open to all students who wanted to participate, and they did!! The thunderous applause that I received after playing the themesong from Brian's Song was humbling for me, as I realized that it was not only my performance, but the message from the movie that was being embraced by many people in that auditorium. My years ahead at BSC were much more comfortable, at least among the student population. Thank you, Gayle Sayer and Brian Piccolo, both now deceased. I look forward to meeting you in Heaven one day!

Sad how race barely mattered on the field n in life then. Of course there is racism n prejudice. But anyone who played any sport w people of different races knows team over that bs every day. Best movie to show a moral n life lesson of the 70s. Remember titans right there too. Love to all.

Damn it! I thought I would get all the way through this without crying, but nope, not me. I was just a 9yo girl watching football with my dad and grandpa on Sunday afternoons, I thought that Piccolo was a funny name. When Sayers wasn't playing I asked dad why but he didn't know. When he came back strong, I wasn't hearing Piccolo's name and asked again why,,, same response. When the movie Brian's Song came out, I cried and cried. I rarely cried at anything, but the first football players I loved had gone through so much together, most importantly, they weren't just teammates, they became best friends and loved each other. The kind of love you don't see in a movie, but in real life.

It is impossible not to love Gale and Brian. They both showed courage in many ways every day of their short time together. In my soul, there will always be a shroud of mystery surrounding them that makes me wish I could have known them personally. God knew what he was doing when he brought them together. Seeing them interact the eay that they did in their careers and their personal lives with each other, it just feels like such a let down that we have the disconnect between races in 2024. It has to make you wonder and shake your head😢

Sayers did NOT "completely blow out his knee" There was no ACL damage and with today's medicine he would have missed about six weeks.
