Brian Ortega: There Are 'Two Switches' Needed To Make Jiu-Jitsu Work In MMA

Спорт

Brian Ortega faces Renato Moicano at UFC 214 on the prelims of the fight card. At the UFC 214 media day, Ortega explained what it takes to make jiu-jitsu work in mixed martial arts (MMA), his thoughts on Roger Gracie submitting Buchecha, why he's focused on striking more recently and more.

Brian nailed it. what he said about not being able to do much with punches going at your face, and relying on the helio gracie fundamentals, is why I’m switching from a regular bjj gym to a gracie CTC. No rolling at first but they teach you jiu jitsu from the ground up, and include the concept of punches. All the other gyms I went to were 100% sport and focused on 50/50, dlr, berimbolo, etc

Ryron is the snake that destroyed T citys shoulder while helping him during training camp for his last fight he pulled out of. Had to take a year off all because Ryron got tapped during light JiuJitsu rolling. He started throwing punches to the face from mount and put brian in a kimura and tore his labrum. They dont train together anymore.

Absolutely insane how easy Holloway beat him. It goes to show that jiu jitsu isn't the only tool needed to win fights. Ortega is definitely a well tuned fighter, but when you're fighting someone who's striking is on an elite level, you need to know how to defend and counter, or avoid and take down. Hopefully this dude will come back strong.

iWasNeverGivenAName he wouldn't beat Frankie, Holloway, Lamas and very unlikely Aldo. The latter 2 he could in theory catch and KO but it's not a high chance. He needs a lot of time to get great stand up before he has any chance at the belt.

Certified Weapon Lobov because I'm actually capable of looking at fighters and making objective comparisons between them to clearly see that they have a rather large edge over him. Holloway - much better striker than Ortega and won't be KO'd. Only way Brian wins is submission on the ground but Holloway has great takedown defence and Ortega hasn't got amazing wrestling. Result Holloway wins. Aldo- amazing takedown defence so Ortega can't grapple and even if he did Aldo's BJJ is exceptional too. On the feet Aldo murders him. Only way Ortega wins is a rather lucky KO. Result Aldo wins. Frankie Edgar- much better striking and grappling than Ortega and won't be submitted or KO'd. Toughest match up for Ortega. Result Frankie wins. Lamas- good wrestler to stop Ortega's attempts at grappling and he's never been submitted with his great BJJ. Only way Ortega could potentially win is same as with Aldo and a KO but Ricardo has solid striking better than Ortega's. Result Lamas wins. It doesn't take a genius to see Ortega would be a massive underdog vs any of them. I'm an Ortega fan and glad to see him back but realistically he needs to improve a hell of a lot mainly striking to have any chance vs any of them.

Some Black Dude recently i was thinking about a lot how is possible to use limited time on the most effective way(especially if uve got no longtime background in karate/wrestling/bjj/kickbox etc). And i mostly agree with u, but i think wrestling for takedowns, clinch and maintaining top control on the ground.what will help with ground and pound.on jiujitsu, I would concentrete on finishing fights or from this top position on ground, or most importantly off ur back. Muay thai necessary not really because the more weapons elbows and knees give, but for clinching too. A welltrained low kick and high kick really needed, but mostly kicks are just effective if theyre perfect.. I mean nobodys gonna win with a 720kick or spinning sidekick without training karate or tkd for like a decade. Low kick-push kick to keep distance, high kick to mix it up. So finally i think some nogi submission wrestling, jiujitsu, muay thai combination is solid. In free time boxing, judo fundamentals

He's similar to khabib in that everyone is so afraid of his no jiu jitsu they don't fully commit to there strikes in fear of submission. Only big difference is that I can is that Brian will fight a whole fight without taking it to the ground if he doesn't believe he can

Id like to see who hes afraid of to be with on the ground tho. As much as i saw hes more like trying to stand up, because he knows if he can beat someone on feet, thats bigger achievement for him and thats what he needs to work on. .i mean, Even if he goes for takedown, if just for a second he feels uncomfortable, he doesnt care about his top position, pulls guard. And not like hes afraid, so he tries to escape. Hes fckn genius off his back.doing a lot of damage, being dangerous every second threatening a sub and so far he does it without anybody really hurt him.. Same sort of guard what kron gracie got. Amazing

Totally I would love to see him.uncomfortable on the ground. Although I don't see anyone at his because has combination of higher strength than all of the featherweight and secondly his reflexes and technique. I see him catching Frankie in a guillotine but Tbh if the opportunity doesn't appear I don't see him going for the take down even if he's losing.
