Brian Greene - The Mind-bending Physics Of Eternity | Modern Wisdom Podcast 308

Brian Greene is a theoretical physicist, mathematician, an author and the Director of Columbia University’s Centre for Theoretical Physics.
Nothing short of fascinating stuff today with one of the most popular public physicists of our age. Brian is an absolute titan. Expect to hear answers to some of the biggest and most fundamental questions we have.
What happens if the universe is infinite? When will time end? What is time? What is the relationship between entropy and evolution? What do people get wrong about the Copenhagen Interpretation of quantum physics? Just how finely tuned for life is our universe? Why does the Planck Scale exist? Is there such a thing as meaning in a universe which doesn't care if we live or die? How will ultra-advanced civilisations behave in the future?

Brian doesn't understand the concept of eternity, the infinite moment and first moment are the same moment, now repeat moment. Infinite is repeat because repeat is infinite. The concept of change can't change therefore the Universe can't change it can only repeat, infinite is a constant, so all infinite numbers are 0 because only zero can replicate 0. The infinite always first believes it is finite to always realize it is infinite, now repeat. You can't have many infinite's because that isn't infinite, forever is forever as everything, everything is forever as forever. Existence is all meaning because meaning is all existence, DNA doesn't change as a concept, you are the eternal big bang as consciousness and consciousness is you as the eternal big bang, history happens once as always happens once, now repeat. A self Universe can only feed on its own self belief to realize it actually exist, purpose is always self preservation as eternal purpose.

I was pleasantly surprised to watch this. Somehow, before now, all I'd seen of Brian Greene had given me a negative sense of who he is and what he's about which had kept me from checking him out in depth. Kudos to Brian for reversing that opinion and doing so despite having to battle the sun in his eyes throughout the interview. I do wish that when Chris was interviewing people outside his normal sphere, or perhaps anyone, that he'd have at lest some round of questions which are so open ended as to let the interviewee describe what he/she considers most important to convey to Chris's audience. That nitpick aside, I greatly respect that Chris takes the time to read the books of the person he's interviewing. Excellent stuff.

For me, the notion that a collection of particles can come together to form a race of beings called humans, on a tiny planet in the middle of a void fills me with complete awe, wonder, fascination, humility, and gratitude for all the systems in place that allowed it to happen. It only brings me to a dark place once in a blue moon, and only because I am thinking about the fact that it will all end. It's sad, because it's all so precious. But it reminds me that it's also going to be ok, because nothing is meant to last. Not even my sadness and worry of it not lasting. So it's all ok. And I just keep enjoying my journey through life as I am learning about all of these amazing discoveries. Also, Chris! Great questions!!! Ones some of us would never have thought to ask. So thank you so much for really coming up with such compelling, thought-provoking questions. You made Brian work lol. And Brian, super insightful stuff, thank you for being you

Talking about eternally... My eternal gratitude to Mr. Green for single handedly making me understand the beginnings of quantum mechanics by watching hours on hours of his video's, starting years ago (specially the World Science Festival ones). Ofcourse one has to have an intrinsic interest in the subject to make slow progress in understanding it (I have 0 knowledge of mathematics or anything like that) but the way he can explain very difficult things so simply shows his intelligence. At first I could understand like 25% of the video's, but after watching them over and over again I can now fully understand these discussions. Forever changed my life. Nice video. Love to see Janet Conrad on the show (about neutrinos) or Harry Cliff (about the LHC and future colliders with more energy). 👍

There is BOTH a localized knowing and a Universal Awareness, as explicated in the following paragraphs. Higher species of animal life have sufficient cognitive ability to KNOW themselves and their environment, at least to a measurable degree. Just where consciousness objectively begins in the animal kingdom is a matter of contention but, judging purely by ethological means, it probably starts with vertebrates (at least the higher-order birds and fishes). Those metazoans which are evolutionarily lower than vertebrates do not possess much, if any, semblance of intellect, necessary for true knowledge, but operate purely by reflexive instincts. For instance, an insect or amphibian does not consciously decide to seek food but does so according to its base instincts, directed by its idiosyncratic genetic code. Even when a cockroach flees from danger, it is not experiencing the same kind of thoughts or feelings a human or other mammal would experience. The brain is merely a conduit or TRANSDUCER of Universal Consciousness (i.e. Brahman), explaining why the more intelligent the animal, the more it can understand its own existence (or at least be aware of more of its environment - just see how amazingly-complex dolphin and whale behaviour can be, compared with other aquatic species), and the reason why it is asserted that a truly enlightened human must possess a far higher level of intelligence than the average person. The processing unit of a supercomputer must be far larger, more complex and more powerful than the processor in a pocket calculator. Therefore, it seems logical to conclude that the scale of discrete (localized) consciousness is dependent on the animal's brain capacity. See Chapter 17 to understand the distinction between enlightenment and mere awakening. Three STATES of awareness are experienced by humans and possibly all other species of mammals: the waking state (“jāgrata”, in Sanskrit), dreaming (“svapna”, in Sanskrit), and deep-sleep (“suṣupti”, in Sanskrit). Beyond these three temporal states is the fourth “state” (“turīya” or “caturīya”, in Sanskrit). That is the unconditioned, eternal “state”, which underlies the other three. The waking state is the LEAST real (that is to say the least permanent, or to put it another way, the farthest from the Necessary Ground of Existence, as explained towards the end of this chapter). The dream state is closer to our eternal nature, whilst dreamless deep-sleep is much more analogous to The Universal Self (“brahman”), as it is imbued with peace. Rather than being an absence of awareness, deep-sleep is an awareness of absence (that is, the absence of phenomenal, sensual experiences). So, in actual fact, the fourth state is not a state, but the Unconditioned Ground of Being, or to put it simply, YOU, the real self/Self, or Existence-Awareness-Peace (“sacchidānanda”, in Sanskrit). Perhaps the main purpose of dreams is so that we can understand that the waking-state is practically indistinguishable to the dream-state, and thereby come to see the ILLUSION of this ephemeral world. Both our waking-state experiences and our dream-state experiences occur solely within the mental faculties (refer to Chapter 04 for an elucidation of this phenomenon). If somebody in one of your dreams were to ask your dream-state character if the dream was real, you (playing the part of that character) would most likely say, “yes, of course this is real!” Similarly, if someone were to ask your waking-state character if this world is real, you would almost undoubtedly respond in kind. An apt analogy for Universal Consciousness is the manner in which electricity powers a variety of appliances and gadgets, according to the use and COMPLEXITY of the said device. Electricity powers a washing machine in a very simple manner, to drive a large spindle for laundering clothes. However, the very same electrical power may be used to operate a computer to manifest an astonishing range of outputs, such as playing audiovisual tracks, communication tasks and performing extremely advanced mathematical computations, depending on the computer's software and hardware. The more advanced/complex the device, the more complex its manifestation of the same electricity. Using the aforementioned computer analogy: the brain is COMPARATIVELY equivalent to the computer hardware, deoxyribonucleic acid akin to the operating system working in conjunction with the memory, the intellect is equivalent to the processing unit, individuated consciousness is analogous to the software programme, whilst Universal Awareness is likened to the electricity which enlivens the entire computer system. A person who is comatosed has lost any semblance of local consciousness, yet is being kept alive by the presence of Universal Consciousness. So, then, one could complain: “That's not fair - why can only a genius be enlightened?” (as defined in Chapter 17). The answer is: first of all, as stated above, every species of animal has its own level of intelligence on a wide-ranging scale. Therefore, a pig or a dog could (if possible) ask: “That's unfair - why can only a human being be enlightened?” Secondly, it is INDEED a fact that life is unfair, because there is no “tit for tat” law of action and reaction, even if many supposedly-great religious preceptors have stated so. They said so because they were preaching to wicked miscreants who refused to quit their evil ways, and needed to be chastized in a forceful manner. It is not possible to speak gentle words to a rabid dog to prevent it from biting you. There is evidence of Consciousness being a universal field, in SAVANT SYNDROME, a condition in which someone with significant mental disabilities demonstrate certain abilities far in excess of the norm, such as superhuman rapid mathematical calculation, mind-reading, blind-seeing, or astounding musical aptitude. Such behaviour suggests that there is a universal field (possibly in holographic form) from which one can access information. Even simple artistic inspiration could be attributed to this phenomenon. The great British singer-songwriter, Sir James Paul McCartney, one day woke with the complete tune of the song, “Yesterday”, in his mind, after hearing it in a dream. American composer, Paul Simon, had a similar experience when the chorus of his sublime masterpiece, “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, simply popped into his head. Cont...

Absolutely fantastic discussion and good questions. I believe that our emotions and believe in stories at the end may have helped to make progress in real science ( example of Einstein-Hilbert), but since there is time enough, it is not so important to make progress as fast as possible when it involves a slightly bad emotional drive. I think that at the end we are better of with a very modest and pure scientific cool approach. Also believes play indeed an important role to give significance to many individuals, but they created an enormeous amount of pain and injustice in our world. I think that a “Mr. Spock” like atitude is finally the best strategy to enjoy and to understand at best our universe.

This is a great interview, and particularly the interviewer. His questions are subtle and probing. I haven't read Brian Greene's books but I may do so. One point that really bothers me is the assertion that we are just a collection of particles. Everything is just a collection or configuration of particles. I don't find it inspiring that this might be the case or that I should be struck by wonder about it! Our lives and conscious sense of who we are and how we experience and make sense of things seems to leave out the 'me' of it all big time! 'Awareness' feels to be so much more than a collection of particles!! I don't think his assertion has been proven, it remains as an assertion only. This is a fascinating conversation, and I'll watch a lot more of Greene's public outings. I'll read his "Until the End of Time" too.

I don't often hear people mention consciousness in these conversations. We know how particles can be configured to form a brain but we don't know which configurations of particles result in consciousness. We don't even know if consciousness emerges from highly developed brains. If the collection of particles that is us is repeated, would they have a consciousness, more importantly, how similar to us might they be.

Consciousness is the means by which God experiences His own creation. We'll never resolve this riddle / this existential question until this frame of reference is first resolved. Scientists absolutely HATE saying his explaination but until they come to terms with this reality, they will go on for all eternity banging their formulas against the wall with nothing to show. God is NOT a respector of persons and could care less about the prevailing theoretical hypothesis trying to explain something they did NOT create and never will truely understand. The vanity of academic pursuit is directly proportional to the level of arrogance and conceit driving it. I do love it however. Seeing man trying to stake a claim in cosmic understanding is the anthesis of 'the meek shall inherit the earth'. God laughs at man's arrogance. For meekness is POWER under control. And control or the sense of trying to harness something you don't fully understand is akin to giving a two year old a tablet device and claiming his ability to click something on the screen is of high intellectual capacity, which it is not. Keep trying scientists. At least you're giving God a good laugh.

Wonderful interview. The only point I found myself disagreeing was at 53:00 where Brian talks about gratitude at how the particles coming together to make humans made possible wonderful things like appreciating all this and trying to grasp it all. I go back to the comments on evolution, of particles and organisms and suggest such accumulations and their inclination to grasp and try to understand isn’t amazing, it’s inevitable. Sure, it’s quite impressive in some ways but it’s baked in to the processes of the physics and evolved reproduction imperatives.. What would be truly wonderful would be if the particles ever gained the knowledge to intervene in the evolution of the cosmological processes that lead to heat death; if those particles actually worked out how to steer the process at least partially in another direction (say by creation of secondary bubbles with reset physics, or whatever), that really would be a WTF moment because it’d mean the physics gained the ability to change itself. Until that happens I’m afraid this is just a ride that the particles are sat on, with a map that seems pretty forced. Still a brilliant conversation, congratulations.

Brian's time-molecule conjecture (section 4) stopped me in my tracks - I never considered Time as anything but fundamental. You can't see what you just can't see. Human exploration may have barely scratched the surface of True Nature. We need an Einstein, someone who squints sideways-like. Someone with the daring and imagination to consider the outrageously unintuitive. Someone a lot younger than me or Brian, probably, but he's still a great pleasure to listen to.
