Brexit and "small boats" - Taking Back Control of Immigration?

In the latest Federal Trust video, John Stevens and Brendan Donnelly discuss the new Illegal Migration Bill. They conclude that it is unlikely to solve the problem it supposedly addresses; is open to legal challenge; and is largely a product of the internal wranglings of the Conservative Party. There are many Conservatives who would like the UK to leave the European Convention on Human Rights, but Rishi Sunak is unlikely to risk infringing the Good Friday Agreement in this way.

John Stevens is the Chairman of the Federal Trust and a former Conservative MEP.

It was always foreseeable that Brexit and specifically the absence of ‘sunny uplands’ would result in the creation of radical right wing forces that would seek to drag Britain to a ‘black shirted’ future. I admit I didn’t think the Tories would transform themselves into a government of the kind Benito M would advocate.

Notwithstanding the political rhetoric on illegal refugees, or the quatity of those seeking asylum in UK as opposed to other european nations, there is a problem in the whole approach to illegal entry and subsequent asylum application in all european nations. On the one hand, families fleeing persecution in say Iran is understandable and surely most people in europe would actively welcome and support those people. On the other hand, there are the sponsered single young men who are obliged to somehow get across the channrl and repay their families back home who provided the money to pay the traffickers and want to see areturn on their investment. Once a person sets foot in a country claiming asylum, under the treaty they have rights which in western countries as a rule are taken seriously. To determine whether a right for asylum exists often takes months and costs a fortune. Even when asylum is denied, there are more costs and serious difficulties in repatriating a person. It is therefore not surprising that authorities do not exactly put out a red carpet. In Hungary I understand, in order to stop illegal crossings from Serbia, the new border fence is constructed 2 metres inside the actual border line such that anyone who does get across can be pushed back without actually having left hungarian territory. This circumnavigates the asylum rules as once through the gate they ares still legally in hungary and can theoretically apply for asylum from there.. Thus as I see it, there is indeed a real dilemma if you wish to avoid a mass migration. You have genuine persons needing help and those that deliberately put themselves in danger on the high seas to be rescued and "work the asylum system at the expense of others. Not an easy problem to solve without drastic ,many would argue, inhumane measures.

These guys are misleading you. Taking back control of immigration means taking back control of immigration policy. This means that the government of the day, and all future UK governments can create, or change immigration policy according to.need or perhaps demand by the voters. They have hived off to attack a situation that cannot be easily solved by policy or law. I.E. Some gets on a boat somewhere and comes in a way that is against the law. None of these people suggest any solutions to stopping people conning in boats. I.E. The complain they don't like it but have no idea how to solve this. What we do know is those coming by illegal means has increased rapidly, and what we also are predicting is that with climate change with associated environment degradation, and probable war associated with that, that the numbers coming will certainly increase. These two also sidestepped and mention of the work the UK is doing with France to try and control this problem, no mention at all. One can only guess they sidestepped it because it doesn't suit their biased view. Immigration is not just a poo problem the UK has. It's also a major problem for countries in the EU, and they are also struggling. So again these men are just focused on throwing stones, and gave absolutely no idea about solutions. Labour will Most probably take the government benches and they will struggle just as much as all country governments struggle with this issue.

What you are missing is that the majority of asylum seekers are coming from countries ruined by wars instigated by western powers. It’s immoral for western nations not to take responsibility for these displaced people

@@saabsonsan yes but they are crossing multiple countries who could safely take them in. Further they are taking risks on life. Further if you created alternative and safer ways for them to come in, that would not reduce the numbers coming. Further if you did welcome them with open arms, even more would come, more lives risked. And lastly the projection out to the near to medium future based on recent statistics this number will increase exponentially over the next one or two decades. So it's easy to knock the government who have a job to do, but it's very very hard to.pose alternative solutions that will be accepted politically or by the majority of voters. This is the problem. All well and good to trash the government but offer no solution that will be acceptable.

I take your points, however defending a government who has been in power for 13 years and has presided over all of this is wrong. We have had 13 years of austerity with cuts to public services and public service pay. This has resulted in an immigration system which is not fit for purpose. We are not checking any goods coming into the country because in Jacob Reese moggs words it would be financially too costly. The EU check all of our goods going to them. This is reflected in the asylum system with fewer staff and demoralised staff not coping with the demand. Is this the taking back control of borders you voted for in brexit? The last labour government deported tens of thousands of migrants legally each year. We can no longer do this due to boris Johnston oven ready brexit deal which failed to deal with the issue of asylum seekers. We cannnot simply now deport migrants back to France and we lost the Dublin agreement when we left the EU without a replacement. This has now crippled the over stretched asylum system. So to say that the government has a job to do reflects the failed policies of the current government. A solution would be to appropriately fund the relevant departments especially given the forecasts for increased migration and asylum claims. The government is now planning to spend half a billion pounds over three years to pay the French to stop the boats. Could this money not be spent better by investing in the system so it can cope with the increasing demand. I don’t think it is very sovereign to have to pay a neighbouring country to deal with a problem of your own creation by under investment. Brexit was fought over the issue of immigration, but given we no longer check the majority of goods entering this country and asylum applications are increasing can you say the governments policies over the past 10 years have been successful? We can no longer blame the EU so the responsibility lies firmly at our sovereign governments feet. As an appendium it is also worth noting that the only public servants to get a significant pay rise of 30% over the past 13 years have been MP’s with their basic pay rising from £65k to £83k per year, not to include expenses and other benefits. The rotten apple doesn’t fall far from the tree

@@saabsonsan I am not trying to defend this government. I am more, I guess trying to defend "a" government, I.E. The current government of the day and all future governments. We have had some great years since the late 1990s, but the future is getting much more difficult. Immigration is just one massive, increasing issue. I also totally disagree that the EU is future. I sense it has head winds coming, and is without precedent, other than perhaps the USSR. These guys are bolted to the idea that the EU is the solution. I think if the UK can't organise itself outside of the EU it's path back will be a disaster. I have no problem with a Labour government as it is projecting itself right now. However I don't think it has any answers either. But it will screw with the likes of the Guardian and the Independent, if they haven't got a Tory government to rant about. LOL 😆

@@peterclareburt4594 When we were in the EU, we were at least part of a multilateral regime for spreading the burden of migration and, along with our membership of the UN, for agreeing international collective criteria for evolving future policy towards what is, as you recognise, a large and growing issue. Whilst we were in the EU, we benefited from the Dublin Convention which allowed us to return to France those coming to us across the channel. Had we remained, we benefit from whatever conclusions on re-visiting the various international agreements governing migration the EU is currently considering and from the weight of the EU in advancing that agenda inside the UN. Brexit has diminished us in both respects. You seem not to recognise that progress on this issue must be international or we will find ourselves damaged in other ways by attempts to go it alone. President Macron has said that for us to benefit once more from the Dublin Convention cannot come from a bilateral agreement with France, it must be with the EU. If we withdraw from the ECHR, we will inter alia undermine the GFA in Northern Ireland and the commercial advantages we sought in agreeing the NIP will again be jeopardised. Even bilateral agreements, such as joint policing of the French coast (which was not needed before Brexit because of the Dublin Convention) comes with a hefty direct financial cost as we have just seen. This guy believes the EU is an essential part of any solution (ie we should rejoin the EU) precisely because it offers the possibility of international answers to international problems. For there are no longer any national answers to international problems. and pretending to ourselves that there are will be far more expensive and damaging, both in the short and the long run, than accepting this reality. ,
