What model mini fridge are you using there. i'm looking for something that can fit a 7gal fermonster like that

Anyone have an issue with changing from the initial blowoff hose to this unit & no longer seeing active fermentation? The recommendation in the video is to start with a normal blowoff in case there's over active fermentation (ie don't want krausen in the cold crash). Fermentation was still very active but not enough that I was worried about krausen. So, I swapped out to the cold crash and all active signs of fermentation stopped (talking 4 hours later). I know fermentation is still active based on tilt readings). So, where's the CO2 going? My only guess is the check valve, or something along the hose after the t-valve is leaking.

I just made my own with an airlock, some tubing and an old camping collapsible water container. Fill it with CO2 from the tank, then swap the airlock when cold crashing.

I do a hacky version of this idea using a keg and a 2 gallon jug. Keg acting as bladder originally filled with startsan. This would be much easier to deal with and save me some $$ on starsan. I think this is going to be my next purchase.

I actually reinvented this stuff without knowing this product, lmao. I use a wine bag-in-box bag, I don't have the one-way valve but it seems to work either way

Bobby - doesn't it make sense @7 7:15 to CO^2 purge the bag once by letting the filled bag decompress by "closing" the valve 180,º to open up that little pinhole so it can push out its contents (including oxygen) that might have been hanging out in the bag. Then repeat to fill the balloon once more, you could do this a few times. This would be similar to purging a keg by popping the PRV open for a few bursts while pushing new co^2 in through the beverage diptube... extra insurance to keep your DO to an absolute minimum. Thoughts?

I would think the co2 would flush out the oxygen while it's filling, no?

I have been wondering what the status of these were.. I noticed. They've been out of stock. I think I may need a couple of these for use with a few fermenters using glycol chilling for cold crash. Nice improvement over the previous model! When will the new model be available?

I just got mine and was trying to figure out the same thing. I ended up attempting to blow air through both sides to find the appropriate way to assemble it. (I sanitized it afterwards). Can confirm that the more blunt end (the “in”) should be facing the fermenter and the more rounded end is the “out” that should be on the blow-off side. Hope this helps somebody...

Any chance you can put together either a kit or just what exact parts we need to use to duplicate what you have in relation to using it on a fermonster? I’d like to duplicate exactly what you showed. Thanks

That is a solid fermonster lid drilled for a grommet on the right and a weldless ball lock gas port on the left. This particular fermonster has a spigot installed but originally this lid was part of my fermonster premium pressure transfer kit. In that configuration, a stainless racking cane goes into the grommet for moving the beer to the keg while the ball lock gas provides a couple PSI of CO2 pressure to start the transfer and backfeed with protective CO2.

Nothing. You'd just push the included 3/8" hose barb into the rubber stopper that you normally shove the airlock into. If you have the 1/2" blowoff elbow on the lid, you can run a short piece of 1/2" ID and push the 3/8" ID tubing inside of it. You can also dip the end of the 3/8" tubing in boiling water for a few seconds and stretch it over the 1/2" barb directly.

I bottle with roughly 3 to 4 oz of priming sugar. Does the CO2 go into solution and if so does that create a potential over carbonation issue?

  • @brewhardware

CO2 always goes into solution when the temp drops, but it's pretty minimal.

No, I talked about closing the valve if you had to open the fermenter momentarily for a dry hop but then cut that part of the video to keep it from being too verbose. Nice catch. In most situations you leave it open forever.

Though in the meantime I wanted to add that any O2 ingress through the bladder or tubing would be much less than the amount you would suck in during a cold crash. I suppose if you wanted to ensure absolute lowest possible O2, you'd wait to open the bladder valve until the very tail end of fermentation but hopefully in time for it to fully collect.

  • @ToviGrande

This is massively over engineered. A simple hose from the fermentation vessel to an intermediary jar with another tube into a blow off would prevent any suck back.
