Really cool to hear how Bret dreamt up his matches. He approached wrestling like a filmmaker; it makes sense given how impeccable his work was. Best of all time.

Bret is by far the greatest. Technician, in ring storyteller, realism and believability. He elevated so many of the top talent he worked with. No one compares to Bret for me, always my no.1.

Unfortunately a lot of the "top talent" he worked with in the New Gen era had to be elevated because they would've been midcarders at best if a lot of the actual top talent didn't leave for WCW. Bret kind of got the short end of the stick as champ there

I was a 90s kid who grew up watching Bret (Bret, Jericho and Shawn are my favourite wrestlers). When Bret checks his ego at the door, his stories, anecdotes and insights are simply the best and hugely entertaining.

People hate on Cena but he has a good record for safe working (not perfect but rarely it ever is) he made a connection with the audience and held down the show for years after the big names left or were too old to be regulars. He may be corny and very kid friendly but he seems like a pretty cromulent individual who is grateful for his success and the fans who made it possible. So respect to him

Cena was WWE. There is a reason Vince loved him so much. Drew the masses, made the company a lot of money, amazing spokesperson, never got into trouble or embarrassed himself or the company, was very reliable, was a good worker, was a fantastic promo, didn't have as big of an ego or was difficult to work with as some of the top guys in the past, never said no to anything & had a beastly work ethic. He did this for a good part of 12 years full time. That's insane.

@@ashishnair12Fantastic promo? Don't go overboard with revisionism. Cena cut a lot of dry, repetitive, boring promos and had a long of cringeworthy promos on the mic. When he stopped rapping and transitioned to the marine, he became very tiring. Big ego or difficult to work with. Tell that to Alex Riley. There are many people starting to come out revealing how much of an ego Cena had and how insecure he was about his spot. No one knows him personally but I don't think you should be parading around that he was easygoing when there are people who met him that have different accounts of who he was.

@@kob456 For every Alex Riley there is a Brodus Clay who has such glowing things to say about him. And talking about repetitive, he was shackled by the PG era. Even Rock is super repetitive & quite frankly boring as a babyface under such circumstances. He is an awesome promo, only CM Punk could rival him in his generation. As far as ego is concerned, every top guy has an ego but Cena put over more guys than any top guy did. How many matches does Roman lose today? Cena put over guys like Triple H, Shawn, Batista, Orton, Edge, CM Punk, AJ Styles, The Rock, Brock Lesnar, Kevin Owens, Bray Wyatt when he was on top. You don't know how he is away from the camera so quit speculating.

@@ashishnair12I don't know who he is away from the camera, the same way you don't know how he is from the camera. And that's my point. There's no need to say, "he's a good guy" behind the scenes. You don't know him to say that! And the fact that there are quite a few people saying otherwise is why you should refrain. Saying he's a good guy due to how many people he put over makes no sense. Wrestling is a work. Roman not putting people over doesn't make him a bad/selfish person in real life. That is the way WWE has booked Roman. Roman is being booked as unstoppable and being booked to break title record. Why would he lose. Cena could lose to 50 guys in a row but would always be on top because that's how he was positioned. He was and is still Vince McMahon's guy. You say Rock can be repetitive but he's also creative. He had the people in the palm of his hand as top babyface reciting every word he said. Rock had captivating magic when he was ton top. Cena didn't have that magic. Cena was serviceable at his promos but to say he was a "fantastic" promo is a bit of a stretch.

You have to give total respect to these wrestlers .. for making a fabulous match and also making sure that they didn’t purposely hurt someone where they couldn’t earn a living .

The one thing that always got me about Cena was his conditioning. He was hardly ever winded.

Considering what he has been through, both physically and mentally, Bret looks phenomenal. Thank you for the memories, Mr. Hart!

Pretty high praise to hear Bret say that he appreciated that Cena took the same care for the craft that he did. If there was ever a word for Bret, it would be "professional".

The best pro wrestling performer in history IMO . He can make a 4 star match with ANYONE .

This is why his matches were so good. He worked through every second making sure that he as well as his opponent knowing what he as well as his opponent knew what was going through.

As much love as Bret has for The Anvil, he has talked about how relieving it was to get away from the original Hart Foundation tag-team and start his singles career, as it meant he no longer had to babysit Jim and make sure he got back to his room every night, made the next town, etc. It had to be a surreal moment for him during that conversation with Davey. They've got this mega match in front of a huge crowd on PPV where they're the main event. Bret had been trying to get with Davey for weeks to plan and structure their one shot on the big stage so it'd be the monumental spectacle he knew it could be. And when he finally gets Davey face-to-face and confronts him, there's Neidhart again, sandbagging.

Bret is the absolute GOAT of pro wrestling. If you wanted to see great holds, great selling, and execution in the ring, Bret is the guy to watch, even after all these years that have passed us by. If a prefessional wrestling match is a film, you want Bret Hart as the producer, the protagonist, or the antagonist. He knew how to play the game from all sides whether he was a baby face, or a heel going up against small guys, big guys, or giants. It didn't matter, he could do it all. When working with Bret, if a guy wanted to do high spots, kicks, chops, holds, simple moves, or complex moves, Bret could sell it, and execute it. If the match broke down for any reason, and guys didn't know where to go next, Bret could improvise, communicate, and get them out of the rut. Also, the pacing of Bret's matches was phenomenal, and he always made sure that everything he did served a purpose. Vince dropped the ball with Bret in 1997, and WCW dropped the ball with Bret immediately after they acquired him. The end of Bret's career was total fubar. I think that was one of the many reasons WCW didn't make it long after Bret arrived. WCW had such a quantity of high caliber wrestling talent, and legends all over the place, but after Starcade 1997 they couldn't create a great angle to save their lives, or get guys over without throwing an NWO shirt on them, or making them have an undefeated streak like Goldberg where he is literally spearing guys one after the other. Throwing the NWO logo on everybody was like putting a band aid over a gaping wound. It was a temporary solution that was overused to the point that over half the company joined some faction of the NWO at some point during those last few years in WCW. Even Sting ended up in the NWO Wolfpack which ruined the entire angle of Sting being the loyal face of WCW, and a legitimate threat to the NWO. All Vince had to do was take Bret's contract talks a little bit more seriously, and Bret never would have left the WWF, the Montreal debacle wouldn't have taken place, and Bret would have probably wrestled 10 more years.

Nah, he does complain a lot. It's pretty much a fact. However, nobody is perfect, so it's not something that should be held against him. Bret may very well be the one wrestler I respect more then any other for a couple of reasons. For one thing, he's a really good dude who never had many of the flaws that most other guys do, such as drug, alcohol, ego, and unreliability issues. He's also not only one of the greatest wrestlers of all time, but he takes wrestling super seriously and is a very honest man. And whatever he says about a wrestlers' in ring talent, whether he says they're the shits, so-so, good, great, or one of the best ever, you can pretty much take it to the bank. He knows wrestling better then almost anyone else you can think of, possibly even Ric Flair. Nothing against Ric, and I mean no disrespect to him. It's just that Ric may have been a little bit more focused on partying while Bret had 100% focus on wrestling.

For me him, Bret the Hitman Hart , but there are others that were great too.

The process Bret is describing is how good bands rehearse songs. You always run them from the top if you are a live band, because that's how you play them live, you need to be able to run them from start to finish without messing them up.

Ima Bret Hart fan to the point where whoever he talks shit about im gona agree....

Certain wrestlers like Cena who are very charismatic don't need to be great in the ring to get over. I'd say that Cena was a solid worker during his heyday. Not the best worker but he usually sold moves well etc.

Of course in Cena's case, if someone messed up in the ring, he could always scream the next spot so the people 20 rows back could hear it.

You could also argue that HBK and Taker would be ahead of him too. I think Brett not being a top 5 all time is a result of horrendous booking, mismanagement, and injury (none of which are his fault).

I remember as a kid, me and my brother used to sit front row at all the NWA tapings and I used to sit there and call the shots before they would even happen. It’s so easy to see what they were gonna do.

That’s a complicated set up. I used to think they had a general idea of how the match was going to go, they new the finish and just called it as they went in the ring.

I mean it’s not just that, the stroke for one affected him a whole bunch. The only reason why he can tell stories as good as he can because he had diaries and such. Family and friend deaths, personal problems, lawsuits etc. I get what you’re saying but this seems like such a backhanded compliment

I haven't watched near as much wrestling within the last 20 years as I used to watch in the 80s and 90s but one of the best matches I had seen in a long time was about 5 years ago between Cesaro and John Cena when John Cena was the US heavyweight champ. That was a Wrestlemania main event caliber match. I knew John Cena had his haters that said he couldn't wrestle, but you don't see a match that good without two guys that can go and who are determined to put on a great match. I have to give Cesaro his props as well but that match told me the Cena haters who say he couldn't wrestle were full of shit.

Bret Hart would know far more than me about wrestling ability. That said, I was one of the many, many people who stopped watching when Cena was pushed on every show, always, forever. For me, it wasn't even that I hated him, but I was sick and tired of every single plot winding up trying to make him look good. But, in fairness, between 2007 and 2012ish (and probably later) the WWE was some of the worst content on television.

It's nice hearing something from Bret that isn't complaining.

It's funny how clueless Fans that never had a Match talked bad about John Cena all this Year's and the Wrestlers who done that for Year's and Year's and Year's said John Cena was great.😂

He's good from the business perspective. I'm not the business. I'm a fan, and more specifically of the matches than the promos. He sucks. He looks clumsy running the ropes. He doesn't perform moves realistically, so he's very bad at suspending disbelief.

For me - Bret Hart, Mr Perfect, Shawn Michaels, Chris Benoit.

Oh it was a great honor for me to be the canadian superhero again and get my ass kissed. If Bret had a 10th of Cena's or even Punk's charisma...he would be likable
