Breathing New Life Into Vintage Turkey Calls

Join my friend Doug and me as we discover how well some of the older vintage friction calls sound with new strikers, and new techniques. This should get you sparked to try out some of your older calls with different strikers, and will gain the respect of younger hunters in regards to vintage turkey calls.

The Kentucky Klucker by Boyd Smith (Cumberland River Calls). I have about 6-7 of his pot calls. I somehow meet him over the internet years and years ago. At the time I was a rep. for a pine tree camo called TrueBlend out of Georgia. Boyd as a very big man and I would trade him camouflage clothing for his turkey calls. He made me an aluminum call in a zebra wood pot that is the very best call I own, and I have a ton of custom pot calls. I have not spoke to him in over 15 years and think he might have passed away. Great guy and one heck of a turkey hunter.

I wish I had bought some more of his calls. As I remember, there were other ones available at the place I bought them.

This video has inspired me to get my old calls out and doing some testing with various strikers. The Ole Yeller has been my favorite for years. A few years back I accidentally left my vest on the ground behind my truck. I backed over the vest and crushed my Ole Yeller and ruined my binoculars. I was sick, especially over ruining the Ole Yeller. After searching diligently on eBay, I found another one, albeit at a hefty price. There are many great calls out there, but this one has always served me well. This video with Doug was a great joint presentation. Good luck this season. I’m looking forward to you assisting Alex in getting his first gobbler.

As good as the Ol' Yeller sounds I can understand how sick you were when you backed over it. I had the same feeling when I ruined my first HS Strut Black Widow call when I dropped it and it hit a rock right on the edge where it cracked the surface. I now have another one, and it is cherished. I'm glad you were able to replace yours.

Try some different types of the disposable bamboo chopsticks from a Chinese takeout place!! I have acquired 3 different ones that work great with my slate call.

I have been using an Primo Ol Betsy with a newer hardwood striker with a plastic horn on the end. It’s worked good. I enjoy sitting in the back and calling our yardbird turkeys in. LOL They come running up looking all confused and strutting.

I meant to add that I’ve experimented with a few different CHOPSTICKS with great success! I have 2 bamboo and a plastic one I’ve stole from my wife’s “random drawer” in the kitchen! One bamboo stick is thinner and round and the other is one of the thicker square stick that come still attached in the package and you have to break em apart. I don’t know if you know what I mean cuz it’s hard to explain but net time you have a chance to pick up some of the disposable chopsticks from a Chinese takeout place, try them!

Enjoyed seeing the old calls. I have box of them myself. Nothing matches the sound of a Gobbler answering your call. Have you ever tried a tube call? Thanks

Years ago I used a Knight & Hale tube call. I remember it was loud, and got several distant toms to answer.

I don’t know why y’all ain’t been using those calls. I’d carry any one of them to the turkey woods.
