It's cool how most people are intimidated by academic titles and think "experts" always know what they're talking about and are free of any ideology, belief, prejudice, opinion & greed. Like the experts of their day condemning Copernicus, Galileo, Schliemann, the Wright Brothers... et cetera... Just because someone has a phd, doesn't mean their opinion/theory is correct. Science is never settled, that's the whole point about science. Don't be afraid to doubt "experts". Don't be afraid to think for yourself, to swim against the stream. You can know more about a certain topic in science than a phd scientist (especially if their phd is based on a dogma, half-truths or a misunderstanding of reality). Many of the greatest minds in history didn't swim with the stream, they were oddballs, not giving a damn about someone's phd. There is much more infighting & disharmony in academic sciences than most people are aware of, not everyone agrees on a certain popular theory in mainstream.

Did Frank Whittle have a PHD? 😛 Questions will never hurt anyone, especially when results can *only* comes by over-fitting models a health does of questioning..... There's a degree of looking downwards from univerity-types, even if they get to use crap lab equipment!

@@LightDiodeNeal Ok then I’ll give my opinion. I think beings would build them for many reasons. It might not be just about gaining the energy of a star. They may also be a display of power and dominance. A obelisk for others to know those territories and stars are taken. It could also be they create them to control the stars and stabilize them. Maybe they can tune them somehow so planets without magnetic fields can flourish.

If they are spheres then they're definitely the Dyson animal model.

To add context on the Kardashiev scale : to understand Type 2 Civ, we need to understand that us, humanity, is at 0.85. We dont even harness full power of our planet (and we gonna go down on the scale, with the end of fossil fuel). A Type 2 Civ can not only harness the power of its host star, but its entire host solar system. They would have access to all materials, asteroids, planets, etc in their surrounding.

You're basing your estimations of quantities of materials on what? 'Our' Solar System? Don't forget, there are likely to be much larger star systems out there, with more planets, more asteroid belts, more planetary rings, more moons, different levels of available elements. There may also be star systems that are close enough together that one can be 'resourced' to build structures in another. Our spacecraft is getting faster with new technology, and we're but mere infants taking our first baby steps out there. Already we laugh at the capacity of computers on the very rocket which took men to the Moon, just a few kilobytes. It seems unthinkable now, when you can buy computers with gigabytes - with which to 'play games.' So think of what a civilisation with only a mere thousand years on the spacetravel clock is capable of doing? If it doesn't constantly descend into war, greedy business practices and destroying its own environment like us, but prefers to focus on the marvels of technology instead, a thousand years is plenty of time to develop speeds and abilities that would astound us. We have squandered our chances to become highly advanced technologically. The Ancient Greeks first discovered steam power, treated it as a mere toy, put it aside and forgot about it. What if they had treated it with more seriousness, realised it's potential? They might have set Mankind on a technological path before we were set back by religion and it's determination to suppress science and advancement. Look up Melodysheep's channel and watch one of his videos as to a few extreme planets that have been discovered. I wish I could remember the name of the video with the hypothetical starship - but anyway, it's a popular channel blending facts, music and graphics, even if the videos are necessarily far and few between. You'll get to the one I mean in the end. It could be 'The Sights of Space' or something like that. Life Beyond series is also well worth watching, as he discusses the Kardashev scale in that too.

Pure science fantasy. 98% of all the material needed to build such a huge megastructure is in the star. If an advanced civilization could build a Dyson Sphere, they can easily migrate to another habitable planet. Complete horse sh!t.

I'm glad there are still some people who ask the right questions. It's more logical and feasible to find another world rather than build a science fantasy sphere.

We have to Achieve Kardashev Scale Type 1 Civilization First. Just look around and see how FAR AWAY WE ARE.

Where do they get the resources to build something like this. Have a think bout that!

Interesting…I imagine if there are ets this advanced, if they are interested in us at all by the time we find them and figure them out they’ll already be standing next to us on Earth 😅

On the other hand....this might be a move to ensure continuing research grants keep flowing.

Is that any worse than businesses perfectly capable of supporting themselves whining after subsidies? Or grants for carbon emissions improvements? Or gigantic support payouts during the pandemic lockdown when other small businesses were allowed to die? Or governments building themselves fancy new buildings to sit and chat in when there's nothing wrong with what they have and there's already a massive hole in their finances (my government)?Or the leader of the neighbouring government buying himself a state of the art helicopter while there is a massive increase in homelessness and poverty? Or the government just sitting by and doing absolutely nothing at all when businesses take so much water out of rivers they next to nothing for farms and residents living downstream (US isn't the only example)? You know, science isn't the worst thing to give grants to, and you never know - very soon, there may come the day when we see something absolutely positive to prove non-terrestrial life. Wouldn't you like that to happen in your lifetime? Or would you rather go to your grave never knowing? I know what I'd prefer.

I’m cynical that we will find illustrations and implementations of human imagination in the 1930’s which we can understand. It seems far more likely that we are at the equivalent of Ancient Egyptians trying to detect a kidney stone using their contemporary technology. If people in the 2000’s can doubt the value of the newly invented iPad what chance to we have of understanding a civilisation that may have survived even a few hundred years more than ours has.

A Dyson Sphere would be almost impossible to build for even a highly technologically advanced civilization. The scale is so incredibly massive and the resources required to build it would not be enough materialistically or realistically even if it was a cluster of orbiting satellites around a small dwarf star. More likely the elevated infrared detections are due to dust particles and gaseous anomalies in that region of the galaxy.

An issue that needs further research

Sorry but a Dysons Sphere is just too steampunk for me. When you consider other possibilities for making/harnessing energy, it just seems ridiculous.

I think that instead of using an entire planet or two to simply be able to encompass a star, advanced life would be able to generate more than enough power: cold and in a small building. This is why I called it "Steampunk."

My only question is, Where does the material come from to build something as mind blowingly massive as one of those? I don't think there is any such thing.

An advanced civilization would certainly choose other methods as energy sources. This solution proposal has the logical human imprints and projections, but an advanced civilization would be certainly very different from us and would do everything different.

I think it's interesting that the first scientist to discover Dyson spheres was himself named Freeman Dyson.... I don't think that's a coincidence...

To build a dyson sphere you need to plunder your own planet in a dimension that should be impossible.

Might be surrounded by Dyson Spheres ? I Doubt It

E.T's - the new "Seven Cities of Gold" that the Spanish explorers were trying to find in South America. And Prestor John - a mysterious Christian stronghold in the Orient and even Africa, which John the Navigator sent two explorers - Pêro da Covilhã and Afonso de Paiva. These were the Marco Polo's of their day. Marco Polo being sent from Venice as they were trying to expand. These two sent by the Portugeuse Renaissance man Prince Henry the Navigator in 1487. They traveled to Alexandria, Egypt, then split; one went as far as India. The other went down through Arabia and then the east coast of Africa. The one that went to India actually came back and found out the other had died. He supposedly found his John Prestor in Ethiopia, but was never allowed to leave and died there. These became the explorers motivations to expand into the New world - not Science. Looks like we're doing it again!

Wouldn't it be impossible to build thinking of the conservation of momentum, balance of center of mass. How would you get all that material there?

"Sphere" is misleading. Dyson never said that. Its supposed to be a cloud of structures orbiting the star, not a sphere covering it. The suggestion of a solid shell is beyond absurd.

I posit that a "Ringworld" will be found before a fully complete Dyson Sphere....IMHO

While I think these sightings of possible Dyson spheres are interesting, I personally think that CREDIBLE recent and historical UFO/UAP signings are far more compelling evidence that humanity is not alone in the cosmos!

I bet aliens would have an interesting time if something pulls the sphere out of orbit, such as by a passing star, and it crashes into their sun.

Dyson spheres seem to be only in the realm of scifi fantasy. Viewing in infrared must accommodate plasma not visible to the naked eye. In turn, the cosmology model must come from a plasma perspective and not a gravity one - this is being exhibited by JWST if one views the galaxy spanning and connecting twisted Birkeland currents of plasma easily visible in the Stephan's Quintet image. Unless this is done, theories like dark matter and Dyson spheres can continue, whereas plasma based cosmology provides the answers without need for such theories.

Where you get the MASSIVE amount of material to make an object larger than a star? Our sun holds 99% of all the mass in the system and it's gas- the amount of material needed to surround a star makes me think- nice fiction

If we type 1ers took billions of yrs to develop (life…humans.. society) , and the universe is 13+ billion yrs old, isn’t it mathematically impossible for a society to develop past type 2? Actually it’s the other way around. Such a structure would block large amounts of solar radiation. Of course, any species that gets this far would either have something similar to our ozone layer, or some other defense against radiation on their home planet. But for other planets that might not be the case. This is one of the major problems with colonizing the moon or mars, since they don’t have an atmosphere and thus experience the full might of the sun’s radiation. But if said sun was covered with solar panels, that wouldn’t be a problem. Does a ship float? Does your roof stay aloft? Do airplanes fly? You do not have to have mass to cover a large area... And some material is very strong. Space x has sent enough star link satellites up to cover the earth... They have to black them out to keep our sky from being constantly lit by them. A Dyson sphere doesn't have to be solid, just a chain like satellites.

Even if constructed as light as possible , a sphere that large is going to be many many times more massive than the target star . So , no , all you will get is star plastered all over the inside of an enormous sphere . Sorry , change my mind .

@@user-dl7kp2fn4b Fusion only liberates less than 1% of energy from matter. Antimatter is better at 100% conversion but it takes a lot of energy just to make antimatter. I don't think we can imagine what the power requirements would be to do type 2 civ stuff like create wormholes for example, and there are probably practical limits on the size of a fusion reactor you can build, but there's a lot of energy released by a star that is otherwise going to complete waste, so it may make sense to utilize it with a swarm of panels around it , (not an actual sphere) to take in as much as possible.

@@vmj361 The materials and cost of placing these solar panels would be enormous, especially considering that the largest, most luminous red dwarfs are only about 10% of the brightness of the sun. The smallest, dimmest ones are only around 0.075% our star’s brightness. Generating fusion power, a practically unlimited power source, would appear to require exponentially less materials and cost for the equivalent energy. That's why I made the initial comment. If these are alien constructions, I believe the spheres probably aren't just energy producers, but replacement habitats, with only a tiny percentage of they population on their home planet, if any at all. If they colonized this sphere, there would be no reason for fusion technology there. There are a litany of reasons why life can have a difficult time developing on a red drawf planet, with the high probability that it is tidal locked, as one of them, because the dark side will be about as cold as nearby space. The life supporting planet has to be close to the star. There is a good chance that when life does evolve, it is going to be in a limited area. So building structures to encircle their star might be a better way to live, and the best way to expand their population.

I think this whole concept of d spheres is bogus. Gravity is not constant around a star. When these spheres get off center and start to wobble how could they possibly be brought back into balance? Seems to me the wobble would get worse and worse culminating in some sort of system afflicting disaster.

Yeah, it's like my neighbor who saw something in the sky that he could not recognize, nor explain with his limited knowledge, hence jumping to the weird (and confident) conclusion that it _must_ be extra-terrestrials visiting our planet... Can I speak with a real scientist from NASA please 🤣
