This is a United States Senator giving a speech on the floor of the United States Senate in which he does not seek to have Congress act in any way. His speech is instead nothing other than an effort to put political pressure on a prominent Democrat who could potentially be Kennedy's opponent in his next re-election bid. The day after Kennedy made this speech, the Mayor of New Orleans, LaToya Cantrell, gave a speech in which she refuted Kennedy's claims about crime in New Orleans. Using data produced by the New Orleans Police Department and comparing 2023 to 2022, she said that crimes against persons had declined 44%. Murders were down 19%, armed robberies down 24%, non-fatal shooting incidents down 12%, non-fatal shooting victims down 15% and car-jackings have declined by 44%. As of July 7, 2023, the police have confiscated 1,525 guns as compared to 1,249 guns in the same period last year, so they're getting more guns off of the streets.

@@graydonwilson5550 he’s asking for communication from the mayor! He shouldn’t have to stand on the floor of the Senate to request that. He’s the state senator at a minimum, the mayor should be collaborative and communicative! Coming out and doing a press conference to refute these statistics is garbage! The people who live here know what the statistics are. Like every other corrupt mayor that has been in charge of this city, she needs to be held accountable. I am thankful for Kennedy, and the fact that he’s holding her accountable!😡😡😡

When Sen Kennedy said it was safer to walk down the streets of Mogadishu. It reminded me of something I did many years ago. When I returned from Vietnam and honorably discharged. I saw many things happening in this country that would make anyone feel unsafe. So I found myself standing in a recruiters office after a short break in service. Make a long story short I told him I wanted to reenlist. He asked me why? That's when I said I feel safer in a firefight with my brothers than I do on the streets of my home town. I had not been out that long and there were some things I wanted. Conditions. I got them and in less than 30 days later I was stationed in the 2nd Infantry Division Korea.

Do you mean the gal who was second in line for the presidency from 2007 to 2023, who flipped off China and said "I'm going to Taiwan if I want to", and who will go down in history as one of the most effective speakers of the house? I suspect she had other things on her mind. I had a poli-sci teacher back in the day. I was pro-Reagan and all the poli-sci students were left wingers. The professor stated that Reagan was an excellent politician because, love him or hate him, he accomplished what he said he was going to do. LOL, you should have heard the grumbles. By the same measure, speaker Pelosi must be acknowledged by all fair-minded people as a very effective politician. Just saying.

Same. I loved New Orleans. I was born there and have always been very proud to say I was. My parents would bring us to Bourbon street during Mardi Gras and we would go to the Old Absentee (I am spelling it wrong I’m sure) House. They let children in and we would run around getting quarters for the Jukebox. We would go down the street and watch the parade on Canal and go back to the bar get some money and go get some corn on the cob at a street vendor. We would sit on the sidewalk and eat our corn and watch the people go by. All the while our parents were in the bar drinking. That’s how safe it was. We we’re probably six and seven years old. My brother was born on Mardi Gras Day in 1958. I was born on his birthday a year later. So every now and then we have a birthday on Mardi Gras day. We got lost once or so the people that found us thought and they put us up on some stands so our parents could see us and we all continued to watch the parade. I moved out of state in my 20’s and while I was away I had to come home every Mardi Gras. In the 90’s it started to feel different. We had moved back and I still would go. But then one year I was on Bourbon after dark on Mardi Gras day. It was so crowded you had to go with the flow. Peoples hand were touching where they should not have been. I was with my uncle who was close to my age and I told him to get off this street as soon as he could. I don’t care how dark the alley was just get off the street. So I never have gone back to Bourbon after dark. Anyway we continued to go but only if I got hotel rooms for the weekend and stuff so we didn’t have to make the drive across the lake as we didn’t live in the city. Also it is just special waking up in New Orleans on Mardi Gras day. Going out before daybreak watching all the excitement of everyone getting ready and catching a glimpse of the skeletons. I no longer go as I am unable to physically. But I don’t think I would as it does not feel the same as it did. Latoya is from California so that should explain a lot about her. There was a black woman running against her. I would have voted for her if I lived in the city. I forget her name but she was well spoken unlike Latoya and was from New Orleans. Latoya talks ghetto. Sometimes she also sounds like a preacher the way she goes on. I was surprised they voted her in. MardiGras this year she flipped the bird at a float in a parade. That kind of tells you a lot about her. No class whatsoever. She is horrible.

On the TV show Blue Bloods, back in 2011 the new mayor was asking all departments to proposed budgets with cuts. The commissioner said the first option was to quietly tell his cops to stand down, but they would then have to deal with the increase in crime. This is not a new play book.

I can remember how everyone on Decatur St. bustled along enjoying life taking a coffee break at Cafe Dumonde for beignets and enjoying the lively vibe of the city. I no longer live in Louisiana but do wish "The Big Easy" would get back to it's roots. Thank you Mr. Kennedy, Mayor Cantrell go back to California where you came from and give the city back to it's people.
