Judge dismisses case against Alec Baldwin in 'Rust' trial

The judge in Alec Baldwin’s involuntary manslaughter trial dismissed the case after agreeing with the actor's lawyers that prosecutors hid evidence that may have been linked to the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the Western movie “Rust” in 2021.

This prosecutor blew it from the initial charges, when she tried to charge him with something that wasn't even a crime at the time it happened. Just rookie moves from the beginning. I wouldn't be surprised if there's an ethical inquiry at the New Mexico state bar association. And believe me, that special prosecutor didn't quit because she disagreed with the judge. She quit because she disagreed with the DA - who looks like she broke the law here.

@@FrankBria it wasn't a realistic charge, the da grandstanded. She charged Baldwin with manslaughter bc it was his set as producer and basically said he was responsible for the lack of safety. That is like charging a CEO with fraud if an employee creates an investment scam that goes south, arguing that lax policy allowed this to happen. That kind of thing has basis in civil court, not criminal. If it did there would be a lot of ceo's in jail for crimes subordinates perpetuated.

New Mexico DA did their own tests on the gun and got it to fire without pulling the trigger, and only by pulling back the hammer. The gun had been modified, and there’s no way he knew that. Also, the armorer did not hand Baldwin the gun, it was assistant director Dave Halls, who took a plea deal. That’s 2 people who were supposed to check the gun before handing it to him.

100% agree with you. When its procedure for them to call out "Cold Gun on Set" yet you are still suppose to handle the gun in manner as if the gun "may be hot" makes zero sense. And lets not forget that this is a movie set. The actors are handling these guns in ways that on a gun range for example would be not acceptable. They are drawing them aggressively... pointing in multiple directions and pulling the trigger is many cases. The only thing I will ask is if there is instances of "Cold Guns" being used on sets... why isn't there multiple guns used and some of them designated as cold guns with the firing pins removed? You think this would be common sense for safety.

There is a person on-set whose job it is to ensure that guns are not loaded with live ammo and they failed to do so. This fiasco is their responsibility. I know a lot of people hate Baldwin because he's a progressive, but if you're actually Americans you need to understand that a ruling against Baldwin would undermine the role of the armorer and place legal responsibility upon the actor that they should not have, because they are not licensed or trained for it. Armorers are there for a reason.

By their own rules and guidelines, any person who is in a position to operate a firearm on set is required to safety check the gun and it is forbidden to point any firearm at another person, even one that is loaded with blanks. Those rules were in place while filming. He violated two major safety rules and as a result, a person was killed. But... there is a limit to what they can be held accountable for. For example... let's say someone involved with catering on the set would've set up a coffee machine incorrectly and someone ends up having a coffee that is way, way too hot or something to that effect... would you also hold the producer accountable for that? We know the armorer hired for this movie was, well, very much unfit for the role, to say the least. So, yeah, who hired her? Yeah, someone is responsible there. But, really... at some point, it just becomes... a very, very unfortunate convergence of events. All in all... the death of the victim obviously very clearly just was a very tragic accident. One that could have been prevented, one should have been prevented but, still, an accident nonetheless.

Ideally, Alec Baldwin should not be allowed in front of any cinematographer, not allowed near any firearms, any film crew staff, out of respect for the shortened life of Halyna (not a typo!!!) Ideally, any man getting a vasectomy should get rewarded with a FREE 'fast food for life, three times a day' (including his children and the mother(s) of his children) in order to persuade millions to hurry up and get it done, before this deal ends (try to limit it to 'limited to the number of people allowed in or near each fast food outlet' for crowd control reasons).
