Because this season was widely derided for it's poor quality, the "Bad Boys" (as they're famously referred to) being the main source of it- there was a definite feeling they were becoming, metaphorically, fat, dumb, and happy when it came to their sketch writing and acting. Many sketches were one note, repetitive jokes that rarely landed. Norm is one of the only exceptions, his Weekend Update being one of the only positives of the season.

Tim Meadows was still on years later. Until recent years (do they have tenure now?) he had one of the longest SNL careers ever. But yeah, this seemed like Adam and Chris's farewell to the show since they were starting their movie careers.

I thought it was because SNL's 20th season was one of their seasons that was so bad that NBC was seriously considering canceling the show (see also: Jean Doumanian's sixth season in 1980 and season 11 where Lorne Michaels actually had Joan Cusack, Robert Downey, Jr., Anthony Michael Hall, Randy Quaid, and a pre-In Living Color Damon Wayans as cast members) and the writers decided, "Hey, let's kill off the male cast members. Nobody will care because we won't be on next season."

After Farley left, I didn’t watch entire episodes regularly anymore. For a while I’d tune in and just be disappointed shortly after the cold openings, which gradually became the peak highlight of the shows. Then when they’d drag unfunny skits into the ground repeatedly, like the cheerleader skits in the late 90s, I would just turn off the TV for the night. Thankfully I moved away from dial-up since then, so if a rare modern skit happens to be funny, I can just watch it and not endure the rest of the show. Or I can just pull up the good old known classics whenever they happen to re-release them. (Please bring back more Eddie Murphy, Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, Chris Farley, et al online SNL!)

@@bobbybird4985 Merry Christmas
R.I.P. Norm Macdonald October 17, 1959 - September 14, 2021 SNL Cast Member, Weekend Update Anchor, Writer, Actor and Stand-Up Comedian. We will miss you! 🤣😃😪😥😥😪
"Mr. Dictionary" - totally sick burn!
Chris, Adam, Tim & Norm - how I miss those days. My youth, Chris Farley, all of their sketch comedy... God Rest Your Soul Chris!
How are they all not just laughing hysterically at this?!?!?
I can’t believe the lack of laughter, this sketch is fucking hilarious
Rest in peace, Mister Dictionary... Without you, words have no meaning. 😥
Man, this sketch is gonna be unbearable when Sandler goes.

3:58 farleys little laugh cracks me up!
RIP Norm MacDonald
“You’re very stupid Norm, but you know that.” As he jumps into a Polar Bear cage.
Oh man I love it. Watching a young Norm jump over that handrail like so much spry young manliness. Which reminds me, you ever notice Gary Oldman is a young man?

And Sarah Silverman is a woMAN
They really had guts in jumping into the Bear cage and had fun at the same time 🥹🤓🤪
I love how it ended with my favorite actor from the X-Files. You guessed it. Frank Stallone.
Only 40 seconds in and can already tell this a classic sketch, I'm surprised I've never encountered it before

same.
All throughout high school I said like so much volleyball, but forgot where it came from. Lol. Chris Farley is my favorite SNL cast member. RIP.
RIP Chris Farley and Mr. Dictionary
Boy, David Duchovney looked and sounded like he just didn't give a fuck and that he would rather have been anywhere but there, hahahahah!
Farley goes hard, every sketch.
brilliant sketch norm is a legend
And nobody comments on the sign after Norm jumps in and says do not feed the animals😂😂😂😂
Probably one of the most memorable snl sketches for me. The fact that the audience barely laughs makes it even funnier.
Can you imagine the fun Norm and Chris are having up there? God bless them❤
