BREAKING BOUNDARIES! KOBALT's First Real Mid-Torque Impact Wrench Review [KIW 124B-03]
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
KOBALT just launched their NEXT GENERATION 24V Brushless tools which we covered in our video previous. One of the six new tools is this KOBALT KIW 124B-03 Mid-Torque Impact Wrench. The 24V Lithium Ion battery powers that Brushless motor and delivers more than 650 ft-lbs of loosening torque. We push this tool to the limits to find out what it's really made of. Lowe's has the Mid Torque Kit (KIW 4024A-03) available to $229. Tool is covered for 5 years and battery for 3 years.

Love seeing new releases from Kobalt. For 95% of folks they're more than enough, all brushless, 24V (6xSamsung Cells), good warranty, and affordable.

@@nickg171 I've been nothing but happy with every single 24V Kobalt product I own. Especially the XTR stuff. They don't even rip you when buying batteries. 6 cells vs 5 of the exact same high quality Samsung cells as the big boys, for usually around ½ price. Crazy to me too.

When I was in the market to upgrade my long worn out battery powered gadgets, I had Kobalt XTR in my top 3 to try out. They're extremely powerful but looking at the big picture I passed and here's why .... 1) ergonomics matter - the XTR didn't feel very good in my hand and the trigger pull took entirely too much effort which lead to fatigue and discomfort at the end of the work day 2) the color - I've never liked blue but was willing to overlook that for quality tools, the color made me want to vomit, too much blue 3) power - yes you can have too much of a good thing. I didn't want my impact driver snapping everything I stuck in it 4) price - although not as bad as some others, Kobalt is extremely proud of their stuff and you pay for that. I tried out Milwaukee, Metabo, Rigid, and DeWalt and found many of the same issues. Ergonomics being a big thing for me. At the end of the day, after countless hours of tool review videos and ratings I found the perfect line to invest in (Flex wasn't even heard of yet and I'd still love to try them out) ....... Ryobi HP!!!!!! They feel like they're the only tools made for the human hand, the triggers are easy to oull amd cause less fatigue on the hand, the expensive line of niche tools fits my businesses perfectly, theyre priced very well and they work flawlessly. Yeah the impact driver won't give you lug nut busting torque but that's not what the tool was made for. I haven't broken a single bit or adapter either (people don't factor in that expense over time but it adds up quickly). The drill spins my 6" hole saw through 3/4" birch ply and everything else I work with for materials just fine (fiberglass, wood, mdf, plastic and metal) and the circular saw makes me smile everytime I use it. The comfort that was designed into the grips is second to none. I'm a 25 year professional mobile mechanic and custom car audio installer, and anyone who tries to say Ryobi isn't a pro grade tool can take a hike with that marketing wank nonsense. I love my tools and never regret my investment. Two years I've been using these now and I've only gotten one over torque stoppage from the drill. Was my fault 100%. I've been in the marlet for a new impact and watch every video I can find to see what options exist but I'll probably stick with Ryobi HP unless something outthere really impressed me (like this Kobalt) and grabs my attention. The new Hercules impacts are impressive too for the cost but I'm not entirely sure yet where my dollars will go.

Exactly! While it is impressive, that gun was able to bust loose 1000 foot pounds. I don’t think it would last long working that hard every day. Those mid to works or right at home busting lugs off of passenger cars and SUVs. Additionally, the smaller form factor makes them good for under hood work. As soon as you get into the full-size pick up territory and rust belt suspension components, you have to go with the high torque.

True, I don't go by torque testing, because I will never know what the dealership torqued my lugs to from tire rotation to tire rotation. I like real world test to see it's capable. I have a 2016 Kobalt 24v 1/2 Impact wrench with plenty use. My van is 1 ton 8-lug. It snatches them lugs off no problem. My son just bought me the 2022 Hercules Ultra torque 1/2 Impact wrench & it's 2 or 3 seconds faster removing the same lugs.
Thank you so much Tim! Lovely review and I appreciate that you added the 10 sec timer! That is extremely helpful my friend
Great job and cool video! Very impressive performance for a mid torque. And a decent price. Thank you for your hard work sir.
I absolutely love my kobalt impact wrenches , drills, and other tools.
I a big fan of kobalt been buying there stuff for years never had a problem with it
WOW! Great tests and video as always!
Impressive numbers - Kobalt stepping up their game much like DeWalt. Excellent testing methodology too.

Wow ! I love my milwaukee mid torque , BUT i'm gonna buy one of these! Great review
Just scooped one of these kits up at Lowes for $199. A steal for the price. Really impressed with this thing as I immediately did a brake job using it.
I used the full size kobalt impact gun. That thing had no issues working in a shop day in and out for months. I still have it but don't use it regularly anymore due to its size and my line of work now. I just picked up this and hoping it'll meet and exceed my expectations
i have one of the first gen 1/2" one of these and its still been working well even using a 2ah battery for most things. if needed there is always thw 3 foot breaker bar if the 2 or 4 ah battery cant get it off. i use my kobalts for work (i work on forklifts) and they are all about 6 years old and i havent had any issues.
Where was I 3mos ago when you released this. This things really totally punching above it's weight. I can foresee one of these BadBoyz in my toolbox for sure. I can see now I'm gonna be a cordless toolslut in very short time. Seems like everyone has something that's simply thE best at what it does. Ridgid has the coolest hobby electric screwdriver I've ever seen. There's slew of 12v tools out there, red and yellow, that hit like they're 18/20v, all the while sipping on 4 or 5ah batteries so long, you have dust off the charger in between charges. Love your channel. Thanks for all your hard work.

That's great to hear. Thanks for watching and sharing.
Just picked up one of these. I've had the og 1/2" kobalt for years now. It's great, a bit bulky and doesn't quite have the mustard you need for every scenario. But basically will work 99% of the time. If you can fit it in the space (that's what she said) it will work. Love my kobalt cordless tools.
I prefer this kind of testing. Good work.
Kobalt is a power house. I like that it could stop the truck rotation when the nut is broken loose. The 8ah battery is impressive.
love to see you review the kobalt high torque again since you have the big boy torque wrench. I just got my dad the high torque for Christmas. Maybe should've got this one instead.
Great demo. Seems to be more than enough tool for most situations. With that battery discharge rate might need an xtra battey or an xr battery to go along with it.
I recently purchased this Kobalt 1/2 inch mid torque kit from a local Lowe's for $149 with a 4ah battery and a 150w fast charger. I thought it was a great deal that I couldn't pass up. I am in love with how it performs, it has way more torque than my Kobalt 1/2 inch compact impact wrench. This mid torque impact wrench is enough for any fastener on my Mitsubishi Mirage I can think of. At Lowe's, I had a chance to look at, hold and pick up the XTR 1/2 inch high torque impact wrench. I love the Kobalt XTR line but for me it crosses into that high cost overkill territory. My first impression was WOW this thing is big, bulky and heavy! It offered way more power than what I actually needed and it felt like it would've been wasted on my limited use. I had a chance to test my mid torque on lug nuts today and it didn't even break a sweat on speed 2, sheesh! I'm glad I chose the Kobalt mid torque as it provides a great balance of power to weight ratio when you really need that extra oomph! Granted it is a little bulkier and heavier than the best mid torques out there I still highly recommend it to any DIYer, homeowner, car guy, mechanic, hobbyist, or enthusiast considering a good mid torque impact wrench. It's now my favorite Kobalt 24v tool in my arsenal!
I can't wait for the boys at the TTC to test the Kobalt next generation of tools. Thank you for testing all the brand names. I'll keep watching.
Hell yea. So gald I invested in the xtr kit! Winning feels good.
I used to look down on kobalt until I bought an xtr impact and threw their ultimate output 8 amp hour battery on it. The thing will smash your wrench into a pile if you give it the beans. Now I own only kobalt and DeWalt. Love em both.
LET'S GO TJ!🏁 She's a beast...
My favorite part of this impact is the butter smooth trigger. Its so easy to handle and has a good balance.
Wow! Very nice! I hope you made a new video about DeWalt’s new mid torque too
Milwaukee brand is really strengthen the competition. I like that. I was leaning towards the Kobalt brand since i needed impact driver, drill and impact wrench but I decided for Milwaukee based on the deal I got on the FUEL edition so it was hard to beat. Plus i got a free 3.8 ratchet non fuel edition & shockwave 50 piece bit out the deal too. 1000 ft-lbs from that Kobalt Mid Torque got me like 👀

@Shoptoolreviews

We definitely use different testing methods than TTC, but we both typically draw the same conclusions in the end. We use greased nuts and bolts torqued to specific ft-lbs, while they use an equation to convert pressure to ft-lbs. What neither of us can simulate exactly are rusty bolts, old lug nuts on a 20-year-old truck, etc. I think TTC does a great job, and their content has great value. At the same time, I'm sure there will be times when our conclusions won't be exact. We may do a comparison video very soon. Thanks for watching.

The testing approach is refreshingly simple, and anyone finding fault with it might be setting excessively high expectations.
