    I work in a salvage yard - my most used tool is a DeWalt 12v Max Brushless 1/2” Impact because it can fit more places than other wrenches. (Yes -12v) The only stuff the 12v can’t get, you’d need air tools or something like the XTR anyway. The company’s tools are Kobalt - both myself and the yard foreman are getting XTRs for our own. Just make sure to buy a quality set of universals along with your impact wrench… it’s really the hard to reach stuff that trips you up.

    @@ferfzero4333 Pretty sure there are a lot of things between the 12v and the high torque that a compact or midtorque could do without breaking out the heavy hightorque gun. Even the compact class Makita DTW14 can do so much your dewalt cannot, and if you step up to a modern midtorque like Milwaukee (fairly short, my tyre supplier got 1" Milwaukee but uses the midtorque most) or Makita DTW17 (or even the midtorque king 40vMax Makita) you would not need high torque at all, but the times you do you really need a monster and thats why i have the 40vMax Makita 3/4" which is shorter than many hightorques but has nearly 2x the power. I know, the price is a problem but as you said you have company tools for work, i buy these tools on my company as well, full VAT refunds and heavy reduction in company tax, the expense is nothing compared to 1 employees salary, one iPhone 13 Pro 1TB phone cost my company more than 3 tool-only 3/4" Makitas would, quiote typical for companies to whine about tools but spare no expense when a sales guy need the newest macbook pro or the managers wife who work part time every third thursday of the months ending in Une in leap years need a new iphone.

    New Diesel Tech here, got a KOBALT Impact Wrench to but I went for the 24v max one that goes up to 650ft/lbs breakaway torque. I think it should be enough as far as I know the toughest things on those trucks are the lug nuts on tractors and trailers.

I also have the 1/4" 24 volt impact and even it's enough to take off the wheel lugs on my Accord as well as my 3/4 ton Dodge Van. I only use the 1/2" impact for stubborn nuts. Thanks for sharing. these kobalt impact and ratchet wrenches are a blessing. back in the day, we would use air powered wrenches to break free bolts and nuts. It was noisy and you would need a decent size compressor. Now its powered by batteries. i would never imagined something powered by batteries can remove 300- 700 ft-lbs of torque. Amazing.

    @@poopl00p3r I have both a ratchet and a right-angle impact wrench. The ratchet is weaker than the impact wrench, but it is still better than using a manual ratchet. The impact wrench is the tool to use for more power, but be careful! Before using the impact wrench, prime the bolts and nuts by soaking them with WD-40 or torching them first. If you don't, the impact wrench can snap the bolts. I learned this the hard way and had to drill the bolts out.

    @@seephor I worked at an Acura dealer in 2001-2002 and can confirm that impact wrenches in those days couldn't take off the bolt and even the master techs with all the snap-on, mac, etc tools used huge cheater bars rather than an impact wrench to do the job. More recently the lead tech at my current shop did a side job on a Honda and was confident that his big 1/2 impact could take it off. I told him it probably couldn't....he came back a couple days later looking online for ways to take off the bolt since his impact couldn't do it. I didn't believe me and was amazed at how hard it was to get the bolt loose.

    I personally own one of these (have for about 5 months) it gets daily use. I abuse the shit out of this thing. I'd have to say the build quality is very nice. Vibrates alot less that a dewalt, and from my personal experience it's got more breakway torque. You can't beat the quality, and warranty for the money... I need them to make a 3/4 dr tho. I've come across a few bolts on a M1240A1 (look it up) that this couldn't do. Very impressed with this tool.

    The logic behind the adjustable speed modes is mostly for starting fasteners. When you wanna rip something off, you give it all the beans. However when you’re doing something like tire rotations or tire changes you don’t really want to start with going for Ford. Of course this is a no brainer however sometimes you need a little bit more power to start a lug nut especially when you’re looking at heavy equipment like diesel powered trucks and equipment. Sometimes those Lugnuts can take a 33 mm socket and above. A mode one on a gun like that would struggle just because of the mass of the socket along with the mass of the lug nut combined with the insanely long stud that those things sit on.

    Hi guys, Im new to power tools, but Im interested in learning; have any of you buyed or used or any of these brands: Hilti, Festool and Mafell? for what I have researched they seem to be very expensive and not very common, even here on YT there are not many videos.

  • @GuyFromJupiter

    @GuyFromJupiter

    Festool is usually either hated or loved, but usually even professionals don't think they're worth their asking price. Hilti is a different story. Their tools are very expensive as well, but they are also usually pretty top notch and are seriously durable and have a great reputation. I'm not familiar with Mafell unfortunately. In any case if you aren't a serious professional that needs top notch tools those brands are probably a waste of money. I'm assuming you're shopping for personal use, and I think Kobalt's XTR line is about as good as the big boys' best for a considerably lower price, though XTR is just a tiny bit of their power tool lineup right now. You also generally can't go wrong with standard big names like Milwaukee or Makita, but if you plan on buying anything from them I would recommend going for their high end tools. Lower tier tools are generally best from lower tier brands like Kobalt's standard line, Craftsman, or Ryobi. Just look around KZread some more and look for comparisons between different brands, and you'll pick it all up before long.

    FYI, lots of impact wrenches, the different speed settings apply for fastening only. For example, for my dcf902 And 894, the only options are full power or precision wrench mode. While for fastening you got, low speed, high speed And precision wrench. Meanwhile the 899 the different speeds apply equally for fastening And loosening, with loosening hitting a bit harder through the modes. To my ears, speed 1 and 2 seemed to be hitting about equally fast. Making me believe that the different modes apply to fastening only. TL:DR, you were in mode 2, the whole time. As mode 1 is available for fastening only. Judging by my ears.
