Full Brazilian here and this game was very hard! I believe the guys were able to understand the hints, but that wasn't the problem, the problem was to link the hints to the object.

I speak Portuguese and getting to the word was quite difficult to me too. It wasn't an easy challenge

Yeah, I had the English subtitles turned on so I understood every word he said, but I didn't do much better than they did. I figured out the onion and heaven ones. I was thinking toothbrush on the first one but I was second-guessing myself when he said it was used on animals. (You can take your pet to the vet to have its teeth cleaned, but I've never heard of anyone brushing their pet's teeth with a toothbrush.) I had no idea on the tent and lumberjack ones.

As a brazilian, it was hard to guess it. It's not easy at all.

I know it’s very obvious to native Spanish speakers, but I could have never imagined how much Portuguese I can understand after having learned Spanish for fun.

I'm Brazilian and I don't speak French, but it's written form is very understandable and easy to read. We just can't get the spoken language which is not similar as much as the other Latin Languages.

As a native French speaker who knows the basics of some other romance languages, I got probably like 80% of what he said even though I didn’t get some of the answers. Brazilian Portuguese is easier to grasp than European Portuguese.

I understood "escova dental" as "tooth broom", which sounds funny, but I figured it out. An onion is not a root vegetable. It's a bulb vegetable (concentric thickened leaves). The roots are the thin crinkly things at the bottom. I thought #3 was an umbrella.

As a romanian speaker I understood pretty well both french (which I studied years ago in school) and portuguese (which I am currently practicing on Duolingo), but it was really challenging to guess the words from the description. I guess even if it was fully in romanian, it would not be much easier for me. I guessed toothbrush, paradise and woodcutter. Instead of tent I thought of gloves, and for the vegetable I had no idea which one has clear color, usually I think of onions as being white, red or yellow.

@@stephanobarbosa5805 Sim, eu concordo com você. Eu acho que o francês tem regras estranhas / irregulares de pronuncia. A pronuncia do romeno é a mais regular que eu sei. O português também é bem regular e similar com romeno, mas ele tem algumas regras como "a pronuncia do 'R' ou do 'L' muda dependendo da posicião em palavras", "'o' e 'e' podem ser abertos ou fechados", "'m' não é prononciado como `m` em palavras como `bem`" e outras. Eu sou familiar mais ou menos com a prononcia do italiano, português (brasileiro e europeu), espanhol, inglês, francês, ucraniano e russo.

I agree with most of the comments here, the challenges were extremely difficult. Except in the case of the paradise, the clues were quite abstract and convoluted. Even if I understood a great deal of what he was saying, I was constantly put off by some the hints given. The toothbrush definitely came to my mind, but I thought it couldn't be the right answer because it's not used for animals. Lumberjack also crossed my mind but I thought surely if that's the case he would mention trees, forests or wood and it's definitely much older than 500 years. Same for onion, he could have given hints that were much easier. I was thinking, if it's an onion, surely he would mention that it can make you cry when you cut it. By the way, I'm surprised to hear that onions are not common in fast foods in Brasil, because they're quite universal in fast food dishes here in Europe. And for the tent, although I was able to understand most of what he was saying, I was rather clueless which object he meant.

This was probably the hardest challenge in your channel I understand portuguese and french but he used really ambiguous hints, hats off to this guy he made it really challenging even for native speakers!!!

I'm a native Portuguese speaker, and I couldn't guess most of the words. In fact, I was only able to guess the first one, even though most of the time I was thinking of cotton swabs, and the fourth one, which wasn't exactly easy due to being more of an abstract concept. If the main point of the game is to understand the language rather than the guessing part, I'd suggest using words that can be more easily guessed or providing simpler hints. Perhaps using clues that make the word more obvious, like saying the first one is usually spicy, the second is used on teeth or mouth, the third one is associated with camping, the fourth is mentioned on various religions, and the fifth one is linked to trees and chopping. Anyway, I enjoyed the video!

Very strange what the Brazilian guy said, that the profession of the woodcutter is 500 years old, or at least it is less old than agriculture. It is the contrary: cutting wood for tools, buildings or making fire is far older than agriculture.

As a francophone, it was fairly difficult to understand Brazilian Portuguese; but the subtitles did help for a bit though. I do understand that Portuguese speakers can't really understand French as well. >>

okay so portuguese is my third language and i understand everything he said and i am not fluent in french but from what i understood i think they understood most of what he said, however it was still very difficult. the first one was very easy and i thought they understood it perfectly so idk how they didn't get it. i thought they also understood him on the second but he made it difficult cause i also didn’t get, i think charles was actually onto something with the fast food question and he would have gotten it. the third one was impossible lol, he did not describe that well enough. fourth was very easy so it doesn’t surprise me that they got it. now, i actually got the fifth but i had second thoughts when i saw charles’ answer cause it made perfect sense but yeah. not so easy overall and from what i am seeing in the comments even native speakers struggled.

Honestly, I think they could understand a fair bit of what he said. But the hints he gave were quite vague, sometimes misleading. For example, saying that a toothbrush can be used in animals, or that onions are associated with fake news, or that tents are associated with people who live in cold climates and are made of metal and plastic. All these hints just made it more difficult, even for me, and I'm Brazilian, I speak Portuguese. Maybe they should have asked more questions

Toothbrush can be used in animals, in fact people advise to brush dog’s teeth regularly, and some people do it on cats as well. When he said that onions can be associated with fake news, I thought of that famous satire news site The Onion (so imo it was a good hint, but to be fair not everyone knows about it, especially not people whose first language isn’t English). But yeah I do agree the hints could be very confusing, the hints for tent and for lumberjack had more inaccuracies.

Acho que isso das notícias falsas é por causa de um site chamado The Onion, que lança notícias satíricas, mais ou menos tipo o Sensacionalista. Mas foi uma dica complicada porque é um site em inglês, a maioria das pessoas que conhecem são pessoas cuja língua nativa é o inglês.

As a speaker of English, Spanish and with my recent acquisition of advanced Portuguese i can say It was a tough challenge because of the specific words, they can't be explained in an enough plain way for people who speak French to easily understand, and vice versa. I was able to more or less pick up what the French speakers were saying because im currently learning French.

I speak Portuguese, it's not my native language (it's Spanish) and being honest, I couldn't guess the answers neither, maybe the brasilian guy really tried to trick them, because apparently although those french guys understood pretty good him, it was challenging because it lacked more information and hints to comprehend more the ridders

The problem between French and Portuguese is that inside the Latin Languages Family they are in the extreme positions: older brother and younger brother. With Italian and Spanish in the middle. Well, Romanian is just our cousin 😅

Romanian is not a cousin os a brother too as galician as aragonese. A cousin is Albanese that have strong latines influences 😉🤭

A: probably not unless the French speaker also has familiarity with another Italic language like Spanish. The divergence between the two in pronunciation and lexicon usually makes intelligibility verrrrry difficult. The first French speaker looks completely lost. But the second seems to comprehend what is being spoken, and with questions and comments being made to the Brazilian Portuguese speaker appears to be aiding the first speaker somewhat...The Portuguese speaker also seems to understand (speak ?) French. Are the participants in this exercise, especially the Francophone ones, linguistically naive (i.e. unfamiliar to other similar languages, like Spanish ?)

I’m a Spanish speaker and I didn’t have very much trouble understanding, I think only knowing a little bit of each language helped me let go of trying to understand each part and focus instead on the hints themselves and what he was stressing

I liked this game, there must be part 2 of this game, it includes a Frenchman who speaks Portuguese and a Brazilian who speaks French which makes it better. Juliano should only facilitate the tips, he explains well, he speaks well, but the explanations are too loud and too abstract, the tips have to be shallow, concrete and simple. I liked the performance of the Brazilian and the French, I would just add a Portuguese-speaking Frenchman, and a French-speaking Brazilian to make this experiment fun, lively and funny. I liked the welcoming attitude of the well-educated French people interested in other cultures and languages, and I wish that the French speak other Neo-Latin languages inside and outside France to be better understood and communicate better. I'm a native Spanish speaker living in France and am in constant contact with Brazilians. I know for a fact that there is no way native French speakers will understand Portuguese without some Spanish or Portuguese classes. The other way around possibly too. Those languages are too phonetically overcomplicated.

As a kid, I didn’t understand much of Portuguese. I could get a word or two in a conversation or a song but nothing more. Right now, as you said in your comment, after learning compulsory Spanish at school and the Occitan dialect we speak in my region, I could understand like 80% of what he said. But the fact that he speaks with a distinct accent and slowly does help a lot. I can barely understand «real» spoken Portugal’s Portuguese.

French words make up roughly 40% of English, even more words will be similar when including Latinate words (also Italian culinary/arts words) and even some Greek words. It also helps to be interested in languages, as you pick up many words naturally without explicitly learning them (familiarity).@@Lia-dx9hg

English borrows a lot from French The words vegetable, salad, and odor all got into English from French, which means you are also able to understand words from other Latin languages.

I dont speak Portuguese nor french and I got #1 (english/spanish speaker)... didnt stick around for the rest

J’ai appris toutes ces langues car elles étaient faciles. En Algérie, on est très francophones, j’ai aussi vécu en Espagne et j’ai appris le portugais de moi-même. C’était plus facile que n’importe quelle autre langue étrangère à la famille des langues latines. Il suffit de faire des efforts et de s’ouvrir à la culture de chacun.

“Banheiro” actually means bathroom, but the French guys understood it as baignoire, which translates to bathtub.

Even though I could understand mostly everything that the Brazilian guy was saying, I'm sorry to say it but he gave the worst clues ever.. Every time he gave a hint, he made things worse.

Very bad hints! I am a native speaker of Portuguese and I was completely off. I have seen a lot of videos of this game in this channel and, with all due respect, this time the person giving the hints did a bad job. 👎

I liked the linguistic experiment game, it has to include Brazilian speakers of French and French speakers of Brazilian Portuguese, and the game continues with Brazilians putting simple words as well as simple images in Portuguese, the French understand Portuguese more without English, the game just has to be improved and should continue.
