Bravo Profiles - Penn and Teller (2001)

I have seen pieces of this on youtube, but didnt see the full thing. Here it is. Lots of cool shots of young Penn + Teller.

I went to see them in 2019, they were of course great, they gave every audience member a metal card sized copy of the constitution. I still have mine in my wallet, we all got some playing cards as well, I had mine signed by Teller after the show, he was so gracious, he took the time to speak to everyone, sign autographs and take pictures. When it was my turn I asked if he was hungry or thirsty or needed anything, he actually was very greatful and said he didn't need anything but Penn might, Penn told us at the beginning of the show that he was sick , since I'm immunosupressed I couldn't get close enough to Penn to speak with him. I had a great time and would definitely recommend it.

It's pretty crazy to see a Bravo piece from 2001 talking about a storied and influential career of these two. 25 years doing it at that point. And here we are in 2020 and they're still just as big as they've ever been, just as respected, just as loved... They really are IMO the best entertainers ever. Certainly among them.

Oh. My. God. Two of the greatest human beings who have ever lived! Inspiring in every way...this is something we all should aspire to. Life is so brutal...so boring...so baffling. Guys like Penn and Teller take all of that and show the flip-side, reminding you that every life is the greatest act in the universe, but only some of us know it consistently. Watching these two, I believe many have remembered what they always knew- enjoy your act! Find at least one other person who understands and can teach you. Every one of us only gets one- in this life at least. 👻

The most mind blowing part of this whole episode for me personally was finding out that Teller taught Latin for 6 years, lol. Who would have thought that one of the world's most famous magicians who's most well known trait is that he never, ever talks actually taught other people a language? I have always loved Penn and Teller, and watching this and learning more about them was pretty awesome. I still can't believe that Teller taught Latin for 6 years though, lol.

Teller does talk, just not as part of the act. I remember seeing, I think Bob Costas, interviewing him on some late late show. It was a bit surreal. On the other hand, Harpo never spoke on camera. Except once when given some sort of award (I think), the interviewer asked him for a few words and Harpo said, "HONK!!!'

I talked to him once at the meet and greet after their show. This was shortly after seeing a documentary on magic in which he was interviewed fairly extensively. Told him he has a really nice speaking voice. He seemed pleased. (slight spoiler alert:) For those who haven't seen the woodchipper bit, Penn explains that Teller is going to do the next routine alone, and he will talk us through it. Then the woodchipper comes out, Teller fires it up, and the noise of it drowns out everything he says (IF he actually says anything). It's hilarious.

It started off as the punk rock version of magic. Most magicians took themselves seriously, but they didn’t. They took all of the things that they thought were corny, and that sucked about magic at the time, and came up with creative ways to expose it for the crap that it was. This is true performance art.

After, how many seasons of 'Fool Us' being aired, to say these guys changed the nature of magic is an understatement. They reinvented the entire field with duplicitous honesty. The clear cup and balls routine will always be an amazing thing to watch. But I think the coolest thing about these geeky knuckleheads, is that their unconventional style inspires generation after generation of magicians, young and old, to change their perceptions without claiming the supernatural is real.

It is truly bizarre to link (seemingly) unrelated memories so many years after the fact. I’m 52 now, and I can remember the tv of my early childhood pretty well. Magic Garden, Zoom, Bob McAllister era Wonderama... but I also remember seeing the Mike Douglas Show, and I do remember the Asparagus Valley Cultural Society. Only now do I know it was Penn and Teller, who I happened upon fairly early in their career as a duo as well, having seen them in their first off Broadway show in Hell’s Kitchen.

As a Veteran, it went over very well. My Oath was not to the Flag, nor to any political party, or even any political ideology. My Oath was to the United States Constitution. No more, no less. To protect it with my life, against all enemies, both foreign and domestic. I will give my life to defend our Constitution. At the end of that act, the Constitution remains unharmed.
