Sanderson's response cemented my respect for him. I love his books. He may not be the best writer by some standards but his work is approachable and consistent. His diligence speaks for itself, this is why his output is insane in the industry.

I love your message about kindness. The way this writer behaved was critical without respect or integrity, yet, Sanderson showed himself to be a class act in his response. I agree that this is a clickbait article. They know he’s a big name and will get traffic their way. I refuse even to read the article. Sanderson’s response is legendary and it shows and obliterates this person's views of him. He could have been ( and right so ) salty and lashed out but choose to take the high road and not match the negativity and toxic behaviour thrown his way. That shows true strength and a strong character. Love hearing your thoughts and I totally agree with what you had to say.

One of the weirdest comments in the article was about Sanderson's appearance not being "professorly" or him not sounding "professorly". Dude, that man IS a professor! He teaches not just his class, but so many writers (me included) worldwide by making his lectures available online FOR FREE! Mistborn is the reason I fell in love with epic fantasy. I use to think a 300 page novel was way too long I would never be able to finish it. Mistborn was the first longer novel I actually completed and where I think his world building and relatable characters helped his accessible writing certainly didn't hurt and in all reality was a huge contributing factor to that. My library and read shelf is now full of books from Hobb, Jordan, Rothfuss, Tolkien and many others. Maybe that would have happened with another book but it didn't. I fell in love with this wonderful world of epic fantasy through Mistborn it was the door that opened it all for me and for that reason and many more Sanderson will always be counted as a favorite.

This article is old fashioned character assassination; hate fuelled vitriol for no other reason than to gather likes on social media or the internet. I have read seven books by Brandon Sanderson all at least very good to excellent. He is not my favourite author but he is one of them. To attack the man’s beliefs is despicable. I love reading fantastic literature from Homer to Pratchett and beyond. I read to escape and to try to discover how authors create the worlds, characters and mythologies to support them. I'm not a fan of Sanderson. That's why I don't write reviews for his books anymore, or go detailed in comment sections anymore, because what's the point? Save energy for what you LOVE! So why the writer of this article wrote what he wrote, how he wrote it, strikes me as truly malicious. All the vague niceties just feel so false. The author is clearly trying to butcher the reputation and the relevance of one of the most beloved and consistent fantasy writers of all time! I actually finished this article wanting to read more Sanderson. Because I finally appreciated something about him: he writes to feel. That's something I really thought was fascinating, as I thought a lot of Sandersons writing meanders on emotions in a way that felt redundant to me, because so much feels obvious. Now I realise that Sanderson is exploring his own self in many ways in how he writes, I feel like I could become more close to his work. What felt basic in the past now feels honest, and maybe a lot more layered than I gave him credit for. And all the fans dressed up as characters, and the swords, and the fact its a family business? This article was rich with details that deserved an enthusiastic response from the journalist, it was actually fascinating to read of a hugely successful writer who is so open to criticism and humble about his creative process. So why is this journalist so mean spirited? It actually did the opposite for me, it made me admire Sanderson more. I read the article first soaking in the details of Sanderson I mostly ignored the writers ignorance. I read it again and realised it was actually a nasty piece of writing. Wired will never get my money

Not even up for debate when you look at how often he puts out works. More importantly what he writes is quality. I may not think he walks on water, but damn if I won't give the man respect and the credit he has earned! What prompted the discussion were two fantasy authors who have sat back on their individual previous works for "years!" Leaving their respective fanbases wondering when, or if they will finish their respective series. I'm sure jealousy plays a lot into hit pieces as you have spoken about here. I assume that article got A LOT of views and attention and that my friends is the ugly part of journalism (and social media in general) nowadays. So I'm not a Brandon Sanderson fan. I've started exactly one of his books, months ago, didn't get very far and have yet to pick it up again. I do read a lot of news though, and decided to check out this article given the clamor. Yes, there is a big dig at Sanderson, and minor one at the fan base (arguably, but I disagree with Sandersons response on this point. I don't think the Wired author was condescending toward Fantasy fans, at least not purposely). But on the whole, Sanderson comes off very positively in the profile. I think people are getting stuck on the author calling Sanderson boring and 'lame, ' and not getting to the description of him interesting with fans a local theme park. I came away with the impression that Sanderson is genuinely a warm and kind person. Does make me more likely to finally start reading that book again.

I think you are 100% correct about Sanderson’s writing style. His prose are very approachable and readable and that is what makes his books so addictive and successful. What is the focus of Sanderson’s books is not his flowery writing or descriptive words, it’s his characters, plot, worlds, and magic. I don’t read a fantasy book for flowery writing, I read fantasy for adventure, memorable characters, exciting plot twist, interesting worlds and unique and fun magic systems (and for dragons) guess what - Sanderson has it all! It’s okay not to like his writing or think he is the worst writer ever but to paint this picture that he is a terrible writer and that his readers wouldn’t know a good book if it hit them in the face is just WRONG! The writer of the article really needs some education tbh. Also - why was the article so interested with Brandon’s religion!? What does that have to do with his books again?

Jason Kehe is the author of the article. If you go to wired and click his name you get a list of his articles which are very much similar to this. His other articles do not attack individuals but they are as depraved. Let us acknowledge that Sanderson is a devout Mormon. Mormons profess a tolerance for the LGBTQ community they are clearly against LGBTQ rights and behaviors - and Sanderson is as well - he has learned to keep his mouth shut on the matter so as to not alienate people and sell more books. I have seen this hate for Sanderson before from someone who is gay and am inclined to think there is something to it. Perhaps the author is judging Sanderson the way Sanderson's belief are judging others if not the author himself.

Wow, that is so sad of Jason Kehe... Seems like he resorted to a new low. As for Sanderson, he has actually talked about this Mormon stance and said he supports LGBTQ rights and community now in one of his live chats (I forgot which one, he has way too many live chats). The well-written gay characters in his books are most likely the result of that. Sanderson has mentioned he's questioning the Mormon stance on this and is changing himself. As proven by what he said online repeatedly lately compared to what he said a long time ago regarding the LGBTQ community. I remember he even said that if he just left the church, he's actually ignoring the problem rather than actively taking a different stance despite being a member. I guess we'll see what comes out of this someday.

"Escapism" has some negative connotations - like you doing something completely useless, and only reason to do that - is to "escape" doing "serious stuff". I always treated movies, books and games not as "just" escapism and things to distract ourselves from work, but as the essence of inner, subjective emotional world - the things, our lives consists of, narrative-wise and emotional-wise. I actually thought the article was well written, the guy is clearly a talented writer. And there were some things I agreed with, the point about the relentless commercialism of modern fantasy, the idea that Brandon Sanderson is foremost a worldbuilder over an actual writer in the literary sense. However I did find that it was pretty disgusting how this writer seemed to hold all these incredibly ugly descriptions of Brandon's friends and family back while being with them for almost 5 months? He talks about them as caricatures its incredibly odd and frustrating. He even describes the way that Brandon and his son eat their ramen. The article has an almost perverse voyeur quality to it, only for the final conceit to be a frankly idiotic connection between Brandon's relationship with god and his relationship with writing. The whole thing reeked of the writer looking for something in Brandon that they wanted to find, rather than actually caring about what was there in the first place.

I thought the sentences were well structured. I also thought the author wrote like a middle school kid with a large vocabulary. By this I mean he meandered, jumped from place to place, contradicted himself, and lacked focus. The article should not be considered journalism as he fails at actually being a journalist by allowing his own likes and prejudices to color the entire article. He admits to insulting Sanderson to his face and then insults his wife. Later in the article he insults the LDS church, Christianity, Sanderson fans, fantasy fans in general, and even Sanderson's son. I don't blame the author. I blame Wired for actually allowing such a trash article to actually be printed. I have seen more reputable articles in the National Enquirer. If he went into legitimate complaints that would be fine. I am aware he doesn't have the greatest prose. They have gotten better over the past 20 years, but I doubt anyone would put him near the level of, say, Tolkien. If you want to complain that he doesn't go into the physical aspect of a relationship much, then I can see the complaint. If you don't mesh with his sense of humor then I can get that. But instead he screams Mormon and weirdo and smelly fans. I laughed when he mentioned Atwood. It is probably true that the people he knows are aware of Atwood. Mostly because the California elites/media use The Handmaid's Tale as a strawman to ridicule those who have different views than them.

I’m not a huge fan of his books, they’re boring with bad prose. His plotting, world building, and craft are generally excellent. His output is incredible. As a person he’s great except that he’s way too progressive and often won’t say what he thinks.

There's nothing wrong with that! As I said, it's totally okay to dislike Sanderson's books. But yeah, at least we all can agree his output is insane! :D

It said ‘Extreme Mormon’. Didn’t Sanderson violate the very first commandment? No other GODS (He creating multiple false gods is kinda blasphemous). So I don’t understand ‘extreme mormonism’. The writer is unable to grasp complex ideas such as religion and human behavior which is ridiculous.

In his books, I'm pretty sure Sanderson has violated plenty of commandments. If the author, as he said read 17 books by Sanderson, he should've known about this. Just one example, Sanderson has some gay characters in The Stormlight Archive and they are some of the most likable gay characters I've read. They also felt they belonged in the series rather than being put just for the sake of it.

@@PetrikLeo Exactly! I doubt he'd read 17 Sanderson's books without even capturing those basic contradictions to his faith. LDS isn't lenient as Catholic... an astute observer will ask why his religion allowed such blasphemous materials instead. Creating False gods in writing and form directly/indirectly is not a manifestation of being 'Extremely Mormon'. Jason thought since Sanderson loves creating 'Gods' he's manifesting his own God, which again contradicts being Extremely Mormon because an Extremely Mormon is a Monotheist which of course not themselves. I will rather call Sanderson a Fundamentalist Mormon bc he's adopting liberal ideologies such as creativity... and his success may persuade his church to be less bigot and more compassionate. It's hard to argue with Jason bc he's in his Extremely Woke point of view.

First of all, I'm not against throwing stones at Sanderson. I'm not a hater nor a fan. However, this article is poorly written. It's a stream of consciousness that gets repetitive because it has no heart, and it's not that witty. At first, I wondered if the writer actually read Sanderson. Then, if they read fantasy, then if they read fiction. Now I wonder if they had actually read a book in the past 10 years. It's sad because the only genuine thing is the last car trip where Sanderson talks about life. Which we don't get! Sanderson is not a snake oil salesman, like most hustlers from the tech and entertainment industry. I know it's weird to meet a guy who promises an epic fantasy and then does that. Instead of the usual hawk who promises to make Tolkien look like a fool, takes your money, spends it on parties and crypto currency and then delivers some purple prose tag line with no plot. In this age of hype, no wonder Sanderson is frowned upon. The purpose of an article is not to hype Sanderson or show his dirty laundry. It's to show his humanity and the humanity of his fans. Whether they're nice ppl or mean, worthy or respect or scorn. Instead, I get the vibes of a college fratboy who scorns ppl for genuinely loving something while listening to the top 40 hits from three years ago.

So well said! I completely agree with what you said. It's truly a stream of consciousness that somehow gets published. I like what you said regarding the purpose of an article, and I do think it could've become a wonderful article (with much fewer clicks, of course) if he only does that.

If it wasn't for all the Sanderfans talking about the article i would never have read it. Reminds me of the good ole days when people knew the internet was for amusing snark. I am sure Sanderson will survive someone calling out the emperor for not having clothes.
