From 38:03 onwards, it's clear to me - you should definitely be a writer or a counsellor. You have a way of seeing both sides of the coin without flipping it over !

But that father was prob a pos because of some circumstances they couldn’t control growing up hence the cycle.

Aww, I just wanna give you a big hug, sis. I'm sorry you had such a rough childhood. But I can tell from your reactions to things with children that your kids are blessed to have a mom like you. I could write a whole dissertation on this movie, there's so many layers and so much worth discussing. But I'll just say I LOVE the restaurant scene. Angela and Lawrence on screen together never disappoint! And Ricky's death will never not hit hard, I don't care how many times I see it. John Singleton did a phenomenal job with this movie and was taken from us way too soon.

  • @queegs73

This movie by John Singleton was a groundbreaking film to open eyes to the reality of inner city black youth living in South Central LA during that time. I grew up around that culture and thank god I had older people looking out for me and trying to live a different life on the streets. Your emotional reaction speaks volumes that maybe we as a society are making steps (although baby steps IMO) that we shouldn’t live like this and take steps to improve ourselves and our environment. But at that time that movie was VERY close to reality. I just hope others who react to this movie today realize the message and try to make our surroundings a safer and better environment for all youth. Thank you for your reaction.

very well said. It was the people around that saved you with education, support, role model assistance etc. That is the key. I was 20 (and i am white & jewish) when I saw this back in 91 and it was definitely groundbreaking, sad, and eye opening....but at the same time, the sad speech that doughboy makes at the end, should have been a wakeup call...nobody else is going to care about you, not because of cruelty or racism (though for some folks, racism definitely plays a part) but mostly, because everyone else has their own problems and issues to deal with. I felt terribly when I saw this and I hoped things would change, while at the same time, after the Doughboy speech, my view was...well I do care, but what exactly do you want me to do? I was 20, I had a lot of my own problems in life family wise, barely staying afloat in school, drugs etc....I had it a lot easier than kids in South Central, but what exactly was I supposed to do, to keep young black kids in school? To stop gang warfare? To stop the disintegration of the black family? That was the big conundrum and still is today. Being Jewish, nobody else really cared during the Holocaust, being Cambodian, nobody else cared during "The Killing Fields", being Irish, nobody else cared during the Famine, being Rwandan, nobody else cared during the Rwandan genocide.....it sucks....but everyone else all over the country and the world has their own problems to worry about and these were massive murders on a huge scale. Nobody else is going to care if black kids drop out of school. (Poor white families living in a trailer park are not going to care, poor latinos working as dishwashers for a green card are not going to care, poor chinese people who just escaped from a fascist society and came to the US are not going to care.....) Nobody else is going to care if black gangsters shoot other black gangsters, or if they accidently or deliberately kill innocent black kids who are not involved in any of that stuff. Nobody else is going to care about black teen pregnancy, single motherhood, or the collapse of the family unit. Most people are just living day-to-day with their own problems. Really, black people in america do not care about the specific problems of other people, either here, or overseas, and other people in america don't really care about specific black problems. It's not black people's job to figure out and deal with the issues facing poor white people in West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana etc so really can anyone expect white people to do anything, other than offer a helpful ear and some moral support? India said it best at 42:22 "We have to care first". I agree completely and I truly hope it happens, because that is the only way things can get better. 👍👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🙏

It's understandable. Honestly, you have to have cops and while there certainly are bad black cops (and white and latino and asian cops), most black people who become do so because they TRULY want to help protect black people, to truly make a difference, to truly help innocent black people be safe and live lives free of fear.... and to make things better. I always thought the portrayal of the black cop in this film was deeply unfair to the majority of brave, decent, honest, hard working black folks who choose to protect their community. Obviously there are always going to be examples of the worst types....but It always saddened me that Singleton did not include another perspective in the film, the kind of black cop who works in the anti-gang units, who tries to stop the violence, who volunteers in the police athletic league to be a good role model for young kids trying to find their way out and a safe haven. Who tries to help steer people like Doughboy away from the gang life and give them a fresh start after prison.

This movie is the quintessential hood classic. This was the first coming of age movie i first saw this in theaters at the age of 10 years old while i was visiting family in Fresno, California. Rewatching this as an adult i realize that Ricky wasn’t street smart due to him being coddled by his mother. He laughed at Trey when Trey told him that he was afraid to have sex, he was scared when Furious took them to Compton & he didn’t take Ferris & his crew serious when they coming for him. Brenda favoritism towards Ricky did more damage to Doughboy than the hood ever did & Brenda lost both of her sons as a result of her favoritism. The scene when the self hating crusty lip ass cop pull the gun on Trey gave him chills. Of course the scene when Ricky was killed & when Doughboy avenged Ricky’s death gave me chills as well. Fun Facts: Will Smith was offered the role of Trey but declined due to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Tyrin Turner (Caine from Menace II Society) auditioned for the role of Trey. He said he did the scene when Trey was punching the air & he learned that in Hollywood they tell you anything. They told him he got the role & he didn’t. Prior to this movie Tyra Ferrell ( Ricky & Doughboy’s mama) was on the short lived show Pryor’s Place, she was also in New Edition’s My Secret video, School Daze & The Mighty Quinn. Little Ricky was played by Dovonan Mccrary, he’s the younger brother of Darius Mccrary (Eddie Winslow from Family Matters). The girl who called Doughboy a bitch was in Ice Cube’s Today Was A Good Day video.

I love that Ice Cube's character Derrin (Derrick? not sure) was the toughest guy out of the crenshaw crew, but was able to show Tre respect for doing the right thing after Ricky was murdered. Also, I like that even when the mother and sister in law are pushing him away, he still is trying to do ANYTHING to help the situation. Like addressing the kid. Low key, in that kind of crisis, it shows what kind of person you are, and his mind definitely was about trying to make it less painful. Part of it probably is some guilt he feels for it happening to Ricky, but also, like you said, that's his brother and its so obvious that they really love each other. So tragic.

@@00Spiral007 Yeah he used Crenshaw Mafia and Rollin 60s very loosely, to nudge the viewer towards that conclusion, that way he would not put his old friends into the spotlight. he never mentions it explicitly But based on where he grew up (101st and Vermont ave) His two friends were very well known 107 hoover crips (later 107 Hoover left the crips and became Hoover "criminal" gang) they kept him out of the gang lifestyle, and it was them who the "ricky" shooting scene happened to, and one of them would not let young John Singleton get into the car for the revenge killing. (iirc Singleton was 12-13 at the time of the "Ricky" killing) But anyhoo, with a little basic detective work it is no doubt they were 107 hoovers and IRL at the time, their arche enemies were just to the East, known as the Denver Lane Bloods....(who did have a sort of loose affiliation/alliance with the "Crenshaw Mafia" which probably explains why Singleton mentioned it, without directly naming Denver Lane Bloods....which probably might have stirred up some stuff )

Brought together indirectly by Pee Wee Herman. John Singleton was a go-fer on Pee Wee’s Playhouse and that’s how he got the script to Laurence Fishburne. Speaking of which, it says a lot about Fishburne’s ability that all he had to do was grow a beard and he could convincingly play the father of an actor only 6 years younger than him.

He did a great job for being raw & real. After that, he directed(I think) & acted on Friday. At first, I thought he was a mean looking rapper from NWA. However, when I watched him, I appreciated his honesty & his realness. Oprah didn't even want him on her show for 30 years! Just bc he is a no-nonsense celebrity! Nobody couldn't handle his honesty even if it wasn't cruel or mean. Now his son O'Shea Jr, his nickname is Doughboy. Idk why but I think he appreciated his father's hardworking & his father's being the best role model for him. Dedicated that man he is. I’ve seen this movie a lot of times but somehow watching it with you hits different. Like the first time you have a good heart and a heart for God. Sorry for your struggles in childhood I understand very much so. But great content thank you for the jewels along the video as well, I definitely subscribed to your channel 💯. Blessings to you and your lil ones 🙏🏾 🔥 🔥 🔥

Ms. Baker is mean to her oldest (Doughboy) and nice to her youngest (Ricky) because of their different fathers, and because it shows that, from childhood, to their teen years, Ricky always had plans to make something of himself, while Doughboy only cares about just hanging out with his friends. Parents playing favorites with their own kids is not new unfortunately.

This will always be my all-time favorite movie. As a kid, I actually would sneak & and watch this movie all the time without my parents knowing. At an early age, it touched something in me. The 2 lifestyles were taken place. Trey, who was living with his dad. Raising him to be a better man & making sure he was ready for the world. Versus Doe boy & Ricky no father or a father figure to look up to, a mother loving 1 child more than the other & Doe boy living the street life. There's many more lessons in this movie. It will be my favorite all-time movie.

Man, I think you were making me more emotional than the movie. I’ve seen this movie several times plus menace to society and many others with the same subject that I’m basically numb to this stuff. Also, being in a couple of shootouts myself, I’m numb to the whole situation.
