Dedrick Gobert (who played Dookie, the one with the pacifier) had a pacifier because, in real life, was trying to quit smoking. John Singleton met him and thought it was cool, so he added it in the film. Gobert was also in poetic Justice and higher learning, both directed by Singleton. Sadly, Gobert was murdered 2 months before higher learning was released. RIP to V-Dub & John Singleton, 2 family friends who I miss greatly.

back to the future is Puente hills mall and Boyz n the hood is Crenshaw mall

I'm not from L.A. but I was in college back when this movie came out and during the time the gang violence situation in L.A. was very much a real thing. I remember watching an NBC news special about it on tv back then and they were saying there were over 500 gang related murders that year in L.A. county. Also, at the same time there was rampant police brutality going on against Blacks in the city. Rappers out west would rap about it but it really came to light after the Rodney King beating soon after this movie which led to the L.A. riots. Investigation into LAPD led to years later bringing several charges against L.A.s anti gang unit, the Rampart Division.

OK one thing most people miss when they watch this movie...in the early 90s when this movie came out they didn't promote gangs in movies. So the words Bloods and Crips are not used. But the guy that bumped Ricky was a Blood which is why all of them were wearing Red. Doughboy and his friends were Crips which is why they always wore blue. So when Ferris bumped Ricky...it was a gang thing. They weren't just beefing over a bump.

@yeabih5607 Ricky was talking to his brother and a car full of Crips. Ferris isn't some random Blood that they don't know. Doughboy and his friends know who Ferris is. Ferris bumped Ricky hard because Ricky was affiliated with known Crips. If Ricky was just some random dude or another Blood Ferris wouldn't have bumped him like that.

The soundtrack to this movie was phenomenal

I can’t even watch a reaction to this movie without tearing up. Very powerful film.

Hello… 80s baby here… this movie, along with Juice and Menace 2 society, probably saved my life. I saw them at the point where I was too old and dumb to listen to my parents, but young enough that movies like this actually influenced my behavior.

As a woman of a particular age, I saw a downward spiral in the late 80's early 90's. I remember seeing spray paint on a church 😳...we would NEVER!!! My friend and I went to see this, at the point where Furious was trying to get the gun from Trey...some teen boys behind us was saying "F*ck that, father or not...they would have smoked him" and went to get them guys 😞. We were shocked...sadly things are 10 x's worse. I was glad that they stated Doughboy got murdered 2 weeks later (for the message that it's an unending cycle of killing)...but I seriously doubt if they got it. Unfortunately, I don't think things will get better anytime soon. We have to stay Prayed Up 🙏🙏🙏

A Bean Pie is a pie with the filling made entirely out of beans. Mostly sold by non-rich people in urban neighborhoods. Also, Tre's dad is not rich, but he's a businessman. That's the hood in L.A.

Ha! We're back with Fishburne & Basset! 😂They're excellent in this, and completely different than the last movie we watched! (Except for the fact that both movies are more intense than you thought they'd be when you sat down to watch them.) This one is particularly heartbreaking. I was crying right along with you, Alexxa, you certainly have nothing to be embarrassed about. This movie would make a STONE cry!

"Furious" is a nickname actually. He is Jason Styles II - Tre is for "Tres" in Spanish, or the Third, Jason Styles III. Great flick by John Singleton, RIP. Interesting thing is that the dude who shot Ricky was murdered in prison by his cellmate - Lloyd Avery II.

As someone who lived in LA, and whose sister lived in Compton(a lot of drive-by shootings), I can say this movie, and Menace to Society are very accurate. I joined the military and got out of that environment, but yes the hood was very violent not just in the black neighborhoods but also in the Latino. The hood was more of a war zone in the 80s than the military was for me.

Morris Chestnut(Ricky Baker) in his film debut. He said in an interview that he was grateful to John Singleton for the opportunity of starring in this movie.

16:08 Hardly any college football programs in America would disqualify a high level athlete for having children. I have see coaches avoid players who have too much interest academics b4, but nobody cares if you have a child. A lot recruiters and coaches prefer players from desperate situations.

This movie is a classic, but so heartbreaking. Lots of tragedy surrounding it too, with some of the actors in it being killed in real life years after filming. The actor who shot Ricky, he was arrested for murder and killed in prison years later. What happened to him was very foul, I won't recount it here. I won a copy of the soundtrack for this movie at Javits Center back in 91. It was on cassette tape. So glad we dont use cassettes any more, ancient ass technology 😂 If you haven't seen Menace II Society, that's another good "hood movie", different director.

Among the best things I love about Boyz n The Hood is Doughboy for his character and story development and Ice Cube’s performance in the role. Cube at the time was among the emerging hip-hopers in the 90s with his debut solo album AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted after leaving NWA. The guy may not have had attended drama class in school, never did a film, never did a TV show or a stage show but it was the encouragement from John Singleton due to their friendship that convinced Cube to get the part of Doughboy. John Singleton met Ice Cube when he was a member of backstage crew at the Arsenio Hall Show and even though Cube turned down the offer a couple times, I’m beyond glad he accepted the offer. For an inexperienced actor in a cinematic debut, Ice Cube did an awesome job playing Doughboy. He played the role as if he (Cube himself) never had a dad, is the subject of ridicule and verbal abuse by his mum who favours a brother of his and ends up as as a Rollin 60s Crip. He did it so damn convincingly that he should’ve got an Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe and MTV Movie Award for his performance. This was long before Cube did the Friday films (film series he also wrote/produced), Are We There Yet?, xXx 2 and 3, Fist Fight, Ride Along, 21/22 Jump Street, Ghost of Mars, the Barbershop films, Rampart, Tresspass etc If the Marc Webb-directed and Andrew Garfield-starred Amazing Spider-Man films were to conclude with a 3rd film (a 4 hour 3rd film to end the story) and if Ice Cube appeared in it - he would’ve been J Jonah Jameson (Daily Bugle newspaper boss). Imagine Andrew Garfield and Ice Cube in the same room! Wasted/missed opportunity in my opinion.

Boyz N The Hood is the quintessential hood classic. Rewatching this as an adult i realize that Ricky wasn’t street smart due to him being coddled by his mother. He laughed at Trey when Trey told him that he was afraid to have sex, he was scared when Furious took them to Compton & he didn’t take Ferris & his crew serious when they coming for him. Brenda’s favoritism towards Ricky did more damage to Doughboy than the hood ever did & Brenda lost both of her sons as a result of her favoritism. Here are some fun facts: Will Smith was offered the role of Trey but declined due to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The girl who Doughboy called a bish was in Ice Cube’s Today Was A Good Day video.

Really good cast so sad this still goes on today.

A bean pie is a muslim recipe.. Milk, navy beans, and sugar. You would commonly see members of the Nation Of Islam selling them in urban communities for fundraising in America.

I love and was a bit surprised of how hip Josée is to the culture...when she seemed to know to abbreviate with South Central, event though the full title read 'South Central LA'; the kids going to look at a body in the very first scen (or where it once laid) instead of a gun; gentrification and that the guy who snatched the chain was a crackhead. Great reaction ladies and you're stunning! This is my first vid and can't wait to watch more of you! It's so cute how close together you're sitting, literally overlapping, lol. I remember when this film first hit theatres. It was kind of a big deal, at the time as it was somewhat controversial back in the day with the hyped up displays of gratuitous sex, drugs, and violence in the black community. It kind of put out there and glorifies every black stereotype there is. Gotta let you know that your audio quality on this video is very low. Just so you know. And btw, really liking your style with it. Hope you guys check out another good picture in the same vein as "Boys N The Hood" and it is entitled "Hustle and Flow". It has a wicked cool storyline and some solid acting in telling the story of a wanna be rapper trying to break into the business. I think you girls would really like it. The echo comes from the tv being picked up on the mic. Which can happen. If you are referring to the watermarks, it's due to copyright. If you are referring to the subtitles, I need them to help with my hearing. Hope you have a pleasant and blessed day!

The bean pie it's close to in construction to pumpkin pie or sweet potato pie but in my opinion tastes nothing like either of them the textures different and in my opinion has more of a bite to it has less of a tendency to fall apart like pumpkin pie does and doesn't have fibers nature of sweet potato pie Bean pies have been a staple of the black Muslim community for longer than I've been alive all across the country as I'm in La native the rule is if you see any black man wearing a bow tie standing on a street corner with a box in his hand maybe even a newspaper you can get yourself a sweet confection that will always get you wanting more and it ranges from being pies to cheese pies/cheese cakes and I alone when I was 16 would make about $100 a day just selling the pies on the street corner the demand is always way higher than I think it will ever be
