“Boyz N The Hood” is a coming-of-age hood crime drama film written and directed by John Singleton in his feature directorial debut. It was first screened in the “Un Certain Regard” section at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival, then premiered exclusively in Los Angeles for 10 days in July of the same year and was finally theatrically released across the United States on July 12, 1991 by Columbia Pictures. The film stars Cuba Gooding Jr., Ice Cube, Nia Long, Morris Chestnut, Tyra Ferrell, Laurence Fishburne, Regina King, Angela Bassett and more. John Singleton initially developed the film as a requirement for his application to film school in 1986 and sold the script to Columbia Pictures upon graduation from USC in 1990. “Boyz n the Hood” drew inspiration from his own life and the lives of people he knew growing up in South Central Los Angeles; with the film’s title being a reference to the Eazy-E song of the same name, written by Ice Cube. The film became a critical and commercial success, grossing $57.5 million, in North America, approximately 129 million in 2024 with inflation. It won Outstanding Motion Picture at the 25th NAACP Image Awards and earned nominations for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay at the 64th Academy Awards. John Singleton became the youngest person overall, at 24, and the first African American to be nominated for Best Director. In 2002, the United States Library of Congress selected “Boyz N The Hood” for preservation in the National Film Registry.

Next time you do a black history film, why don't you go back to the original OG, Sydney Poitier. He was the first black man to win an Oscar. He made many great films. The younger generation don't have a clue as to who he was, and that's a shame. You could start off with " In the heat of the night" from 1967.

I’d totally be down for that! I only recently got into his filmography after he passed. I’ve still only seen like 3 films but I enjoyed them all - which was kinda surprising to me cuz I’m not generally into films from the 50’s/60’s.

@@tommosley2844 Welcome to the channel! And noted 👌🏾 we’re trying to work on that! It’s a tough line to straddle. And just so you know - it may be a little while before we’d able to get to any of his films on KZread. We’ve been on a bit of a delay/hiatus and have some catching up to do with content we already have lined up. For example this video was supposed to be out in February. 🙃 - And this isn’t an ad but you’d have a better chance of getting us to react to a request sooner over on Patreon in our Series Regular tier as it’s a smaller community and we’re able to do more of the requests. But that might not be worth it if you don’t watch any of the other content we react to - just thought I’d let you know as another option.

Take Black History Month off. Js it doesn't look right as a viewer and it's not Black History Month. Love the channel ❤️

Thanks! 😊 - Perhaps we will change it but we’re not sure as the film was suggested and voted on by subscribers for BHM. We just ran into a bunch of difficulties and it didn’t come out until now. This film and the other selected films for Pride, AAPI Heritage Month & Women’s History Month will all be coming out after the fact as well but we still want to honor what they were selected for (as we will when we catch up to honor films/months in the future). Hopefully we can be more timely moving forward though!
