There are 3 types of punches: straight, hooks, and uppercuts. You can throw punches with both hands, so there are 6 of them. With each punch, you can target both the head and the body.
The jab.
We use it at long and middle range to hit the opponent, control the distance, and set up more powerful punches and counter your opponent's punches. You can throw this punch to the head and to the body of your opponent.
The cross.
We use it at long and middle range to deal a lot of damage to your opponent and counter your opponent's punches. This punch has a lot of distance to travel, so it usually goes after the jab, but if you're fluent with the punch and fast, you can start your attacks with it. You can throw this punch to the head and to the body of your opponent.
The lead hook.
There are 2 types of this punch:
- classical; you throw this punch at middle or short range after pulling your lead shoulder back in a combo or after a defensive move.
- looping; you throw this punch at long range without pulling your lead shoulder back.
You can throw the lead hook to the head and to the body of your opponent.
The rear hook.
Use it at short and middle range to hit your opponent hard. Usually, this punch is thrown in a combo, as a counter, or after a defensive move. You can throw this punch to the head and to the body of your opponent.
The lead uppercut.
There are 2 ways to throw this punch:
- with hip rotation; as a single punch, counter, or the first punch of a combo.
- without hip rotation; after a defensive move or in a combo.
You can throw this punch to the head and to the body of your opponent.
The rear uppercut.
There are 2 ways to throw this punch:
- with hip rotation; as a single punch, counter, or the first punch of a combo.
- without hip rotation; after a defensive move or in a combo.
You can throw this punch to the head and to the body of your opponent.
Progressions for each punch both in the frontal and in the fighting stances:
- form of each punch at one spot without rotation.
- form of each punch at one spot with rotation.
- punching with a single step in each direction.
- punching with movement and defensive moves.
Common mistakes:
- Not extending your arms.
- Leaning forward.
- Arm punching.
- Telegraphing.
- Dropping the non-punching hand.
- Not rotating your fists.
Homework:
Practice all progressions of punches that I showed separately and then try to add movement, defensive techniques, and practice all single punches while shadow boxing.

The worst feeling ever on sparring day is when your partner decides to no show or when he does show up and decides he doesn’t wanna spar

That's why in my gym, my coach always chooses our sparring partners randomly. Yes, you can sometimes choose your sparring partner if you want, but after the first round you have to change your opponent. And no, I've never heard in my gym that you could choose to spar or not. You have to spar, otherwise you'll be bullied by the coach.

First comment. I have a question i think i jave good form and technique but when i shadowbox i think that my punches are weak and wont work. Is it my confidence or what?? I dont have a bag to hit

  • @akhotinbxng

Yeah, I think it’s your confidence. You won’t know if your punches work until you try partner work/sparring. After that you will gain it
