BOUREE in E Minor for Solo Flute - Bach or Jethro Tull?
Музыка
Hi there!
Let's play something classic today! Or should I say something rock?
I wanted so bad to play some Bach, but I also love Jethro Tull, so here is the result. What do you think about my interpretation?
Hope you will enjoy it, and remember to check out the link in the description if you wanna taste one of the best Italian wines ever!

@@flutepancake1312 more than ever. Back in those days when all this great classic rock was being produced, we never considered that it was a window of greatness - i just figured great music would always be created (it’s all i knew at that age). Lo and behold, it was a fleeting moment when greatness was a feast before the long famine that has followed since.

That the flute part was helped along by one of the MOST bad-ass Bass solos in history certainly didn't hurt Old Bach's little "ditty" at all.

What is called Common Practice Western Music is most of all attributable to Bach's 371 Chorales for the Lutheran Liturgy. He wanted to make four-part chorales that commoners could sing. He was so consistent in establishing major-minor relationships, especially for use of the leading tone, that his techniques became the de facto "rules" still observed today.

@@flutepancake1312 Well, relating to that question, the composition is Bach, though I believe that Jethro Tull's arrangement of the piece is somewhat unique compared to the way a straight classical ensemble would play it. I think Tull speeds up the tempo a little, and the distinctive low bass line makes the melody stand out a lot. When I have heard classical groups play the piece it isn't quite as hummable. I wonder in what ways they transposed the composition from whatever instruments a classical group uses to the rock band instruments and flute. Though I don't know, I think a lot of his stuff is adapted to classical ensembles, because he mostly wrote for the organ. But I could be wrong about that generalization.

Jethro Tull for sure! :) It's truly amazing what a 'gateway drug' this piece of music was for so many of us back in the 60s. Within a few years of my first hearing this I was studying Early Music (!) at the Royal Conservatory, while making my living playing in various Rock bands! I have no doubt that this was one (of many) "Baroque Rock" adaptations of music that swung my interests in that direction, and have lasted a lifetime. If you want to hear another excellent adaptation of Bach from around this same period, from another British Prog Rock band, please check out the ubiquitous "Fugue In D Minor" by the band Egg. I promise you won't be disappointed! :)

trying to categorize music is an exercise in futility. the great Duke Ellingtons famoulsy noted, "If it sounds good it IS good". Bach is foundational. Pianist Jacques Loussier did well interpreting a bunch of Bach as jazz. Arthur Feidler took a lot of Pop music transcribed it for classical orchestra. Probably moe people were exposet to Bouree through Ian Anderson and Jethro Till than were exposed to it through music classes, but hopefully that exposure led them to listen to more Bach. Everyone wins.

@@flutepancake1312 ..you know, I never really thought of myself as into music until recently, as I've exposed my partner to lots of stuff she had never heard. I'm mid 70's. Growing up, there was a lot of music in movies and cartoons on TV that was from the 20-30-and 40's so I kind of accepted it as my own. We got a big box stereo that came with 100 LPs, so I listened to a big variety of bands broadway show albums, vocal groups and niche acts like 'the harmonicats'. THEN we had the Beatles, British Invasion and all the Folkies. Classical was fundamental, going back to my church day. We had a real pipe organ, and one of my teachers was a little lady, Ilse Schmidt, who was masterful on it, and loved Bach. And as a young man, Playboy was a big thing, and the promoted the heck out of Jazz. There is SO much that is pleasing to listen to, or in my case evokes memories of time and place. One of my great regrets is never having learned to play. I am glad for you that you did and do. Please make it a goal to dip your toe into as many artist as you can, particularly the one who are from decades before you. There is much that is marvelous, and you never know what will inspire you.

It wasn't just the Tull/Bach mashup that did it for me though; at that time there were many groups combining styles and was even a "Baroque Rock" style of music. ;)
